Quotes from Socrates
Socrates was a Classical Greek Philosopher. Socrates was given credit as one of the co-founders of western philosophy. He is only remembered through the writings of his students, especially, Plato's, interpretation of his teacher. He has contributed to the field of ethics and also taught many students. He has inspired and really knew how to question everything. I think you need to question everything you can or else your just accepting most things because that is the way it is.
Read some of his quotes here:
" All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine. "
If you do good things you are likely to be remembered. If your soul is clean you will become divine. The choice is yours to good or to do bad.
" Be as you wish to seem. "
If you see yourself a certain way you must act the part. Don't pretend to be something your not. Show people the perspective you would like them to perceive.
" Beauty is a short-lived tyranny. "
When you have beauty, you have a power over people. People will respect you and do whatever it is you want. But, as Socrates explains, this is short lived. People grow old and you aren't the beautiful person you once were. Some great words of wisdom.
" False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil. "
Always tell the truth. Being caught in a lie is not a good situation to find yourself in. Not only can you hurt feelings you might affect the person or thing you are lying about. If you lie you can hurt your own soul with guilt.
" By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. "
If you find yourself with a bad wife you might end up questioning a lot of things. You might actually figure out why things are the way they are.
" I am not an Athenian or a Greek, but a citizen of the world. "
We aren't black, white, or asian, we are all apart of the world. We are apart of something much bigger then just one area. We are apart of a huge Universe. We shouldn't consider ourselves an American or a German. We need to view ourselves as one. We live on one planet in a system of billions, maybe trillions.
" Children today are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food, and tyrannize their teachers. "
I find this quote quite funny. This quote is even prevalent today. If anything we find kids today even more spoiled and out of control. Kids today don't know hard work because of all the technology that is provided. Not to blame the children. Blame the parents or the government run school that is educating the child.
" If a man would move the world, he must first move himself. "
You can't change the world without changing yourself first. You can't say you are going to do something unless you actually do it. So don't talk about doing it , just do it, then say you did it. People are more likely to accomplish something when they don't tell people they are going to do it.
" No man undertakes a trade he has not learned, even the meanest; yet every one thinks himself sufficiently qualified for the hardest of all trades - that of government. "
No matter what the opinion is people always believe they know how to run government. The truth is no one in government is good at running things, for example the economy. Only the people can run the economy correctly. The people are what make government work. The government fails at everything they do.
" As for me, all I know is that I know nothing. "
We all have our opinions. The truth of the matter is, that we don't know anything. We only know what we are told and what we learn. We don't know for sure that events in the past happened the way they did. We really don't know anything. Socrates is at least strong enough to admit that.
