Quotes From Plato
Plato was a Greek philosopher, writer, and a mathematician. He lived from 428/427 BC– 348/347 BC. He was a student of Socrates, who taught him how to think and live. During his life he created such things as the Academy in Athens, the first institution for higher learning. Plato was a sophisticated writer and published many topics, such as philosophy and mathematics.
" Opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance. "
This is a very intelligent phrase. Plato explains people form opinions based on their knowledge. People's knowledge directly reflects the information that was retained. People are ignorant, because they don't know everything and they try to form opinions. They are saying what they think, not what they know. Plato is correct, opinion is between knowledge and ignorance.
" Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws. "
I feel like Plato is way ahead of his time. I really like this quote. I too am also against laws, but not every law. Government has just become too excessive with passing laws. Too many laws cause so much more harm then good. After January 1, 2012, 40,000 new laws were passed. Who has time to read that many laws? Usually the laws are written for the rich. They are smart enough to know all the loopholes.
" The community which has neither poverty nor riches will always have the noblest principles. "
Plato is speaking about the middle class. People who are able to live comfortably. If you have enough money to be able to save and enjoy yourself, you are less likely to be greedy. Usually the more money a person has the greedier they become. But, if a community has poverty it is not enjoyable to be scrounging for food. Very intuitive, Plato.

" I have hardly ever known a mathematician who was capable of reasoning. "
This is so funny. If you know a mathematician, you will know they are just like a computer. In being like a computer, computers can not reason. A computer can only run exact formulas. A mathematician will always come out with the same conclusion. I think Plato was one of the few mathematician who was also a philosopher.
" One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. "
One thing Plato understands, is politicians are not very productive. If you choose not to participate in politics you end up being governed by individuals who lie, cheat, and take advantage of tax payers. Politicians usually convince people to allow them to pass programs in order to make money. Government can never do anything right. Government runs many failing businesses. They do not let them go bankrupt, they just put more money into something that fails. You can not just put more money into something and expect it to get better. So in a way government controls the environment we live in while slowing down the evolution of technology, and education. If you aren't involved in politics you are governed by the inferior. You can see even when Plato was around government was very similar to today's standards.
" There is no harm in repeating a good thing. "
If you continue doing a good thing, then you will feel good. For example, working hard, if you take the time to work hard it will pay off in the end. Don't let a good thing slip away, you may only have one chance to keep it.
" Attention to health is life greatest hindrance. "
It is a good thing to make sure you keep up with your health. With all of today's pesticides and hormone injected foods it is good to stay on top of a healthy well balanced diet. But, if you pay too much attention to health and worry about it all the time you will do more harm then good. Don't let your health hinder your a good mood.
" The highest reach of injustice is to be deemed just when you are not. "
To be praised of something you shouldn't take credit for is a terrible feeling. The guilt of taking credit for something you didn't accomplish will fill you up every time someone congratulates you. Plato understood this very well.
" Love is a serious mental disease. "
We all know when we fall in love we start acting in ways we would have never thought. When we fall in love and look at our significant others it makes us begin to develop a mental illness. We become addicted, and start acting delirious. Like with all addictions pleasure comes first and pain comes later.
" Courage is knowing what not to fear "
As the saying goes, "don't fear anything except fear itself". It is good to have courage, you'll never know when you will need it. A good way to over come your fears is to confront them.
Plato was a great philosopher, who had many great beliefs he wrote down. Even though Plato, is from a time far away from now, he still has quotes we can relate to today. He points out obvious observations, that are very wise. Just reading some of his quotes will have you reading into them. It just goes to show you love and politics never change.

How do you know Plato never said that? Did you know him personally?
Besides, it doesn't mean he is for anarchy.
Actually democracy leads to tyranny. Anarchy leads to a structured system.
http://mobile.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/p/plat... and any other quote site says he did say it FYI.
Historian on May 01, 2013:
If you are going to put together a page of things Plato said you might want to make sure that Plato actually said them.
Plato NEVER said: " Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws. "
He would, in fact, be highly annoyed to know that people are misquoting him in this manner as he was very much against anarchy and wrote extensively on how there may be only subtle distinctions between democracy and anarchy but they are important. Anarchy always devolves into tyranny.
