Benefits and Disadvantages of Calculator in School

The technology is booming, and modern innovations and technology has changed our lives. However, there are some old objects that are still used by us in our daily life. Calculator is one of the devices, which still carries importance in our life. This handheld device is used by students from very young age.

There is a huge debate in our society, whether students should be allowed to use a calculator from such a young age. The advantages are balanced by the disadvantages. The debate has both positive and negative sides. However, in our modern society, calculator is used by pupils from young age.


Advantages of Calculator in School

This handheld device allows students to solve complicated problems quickly and in an efficient manner. Additionally, it can reduce the problem to simpler tasks and allows the student to devote more time in understanding the problem. Secondly, they are saved from monotonous calculations and the same boring procedure.

The above advantages help students to avoid boredom, and it does not demoralize their mathematical understanding. If mathematics is not made entertaining, pupil can feel bored, and it can demoralize their mathematical understanding.

Secondly, teachers realize that the mathematical capacity of young pupils is not great, but using this handheld device they can manage addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problem in the fast and effective manner. Teachers understand that the student would not have learned mathematical table of 20 or would be well versed in solving the problem without the help of mathematical device or paper. They would make fewer mistakes and will be more comfortable in solving the tough problem. If a student is confident about his or her ability, then the problem is already half solved.


Disadvantages of the Calculator

The real picture is very different from what we have discussed above. The advantages are not as attractive and sometime tough situations can lower the confidence of the students.

Initially, the brand may be the best in the market, but it is still a device. The power and efficiency is completely dependent on the ability of the operator. A pupil must know the instructions given in the manual.

Calculator is available in variety of brands, and each brand and model requires a specific set of instructions. It is a proven fact that many of us do not bother to read manual, and it gets lost. Although the instructions are simple, there are chances that pupil might make mistake. A small mistake is sufficient to incorrect the answer. A pupil must have the ability of estimating the right answers or the pupil would not recheck the problem. It is in the best interest of student to repeat all the mathematical calculation once. Alternatively, if there is difference in answers between first and second calculation, the pupil must repeat the operations again.

There are many scenarios where a pupil can make mistakes, such as pressing wrong buttons, forgetting to change the mode, incorrectly rounding the values and wrong methods of evaluating the bracket.

It is not guaranteed that advance student would not make mistakes. There are strong chances that an advanced student is not able to solve the brackets problem correctly. A kid, who is unable to multiply 13x7 mentally, would face problem remembering or solving the tough formulas in graduations.

If the student is advanced and can perform mathematical operations quickly, the individual must use the handheld device only for checking the calculations. It must provide them the advantage of solving the answer quickly and efficient manner. Alternatively, if the individual does not have a calculator, he should still be able to solve the mathematical operation. However, the use of the handheld device would only reduce their mental strength of solving the problem by their own.

Similarly, for not so advanced students, it would serve without which they cannot perform any mathematical operation.

As per the research and surveys carried out by major institutes and organizations, it is a proven fact that students using calculators from young age has reduced mental computational skills. Additionally, it becomes mandatory for pupil to carry a calculator everywhere.

Lastly, if the use of this handheld device is not stopped in near future, we might lack quality scientists with great computational skills in the near future. There must be rules and guidelines framed by the top educational institutions to make sure that the students are not deprived of their own skills.

I study in a CBSE syllabus (an Indian syllabus) and I am currently in Grade 11. We are still not given permission to use calculators during our exams and personally I believe it has done tremendously in improving my mental math. I strongly believe that students must not use calculators for at least 10 years and then they must definitely go ahead with using them so as to get in touch with these devices which are allowed in entrance exams after Grade 12 and also later on in life.

1o years of Self Math + 2 years of Calculator Math= Strong Mind in the field of Math

I believe this formula would be ideal to not lose the strongest and best device on planet earth; the human brain.
