Brainstorming Clears Writer's Block

It happens to us all at one time or another, the dreadful writer's block. You sit looking at a blank page or an empty computer screen and think, "What am I going to write about?" Everyone you ask will ream off a list of topics of which you may know nothing about or have very little interest in. In other words, they are of no help.

Using a calendar as a guide for brainstorming, I will suggest potential topics that may work for you. Some may be just what you've been waiting for or perhaps you will get another idea as a result of this session.

It's said, "the best place to hide a dead body is on page 2 of a Google search". In other words, if you aren't on the first page, you probably won't get found. If you haven't noticed, people have become impatient and want instant results and many won't even go to the second page of a search engine.

We all want to be at the top of a Google page in the search results. Let's be honest, this is 'the holy grail' for online writers. So what does it take to make it there? Many visitors, a popular topic, possibly a niche market, advertising, longevity and some would say deep pockets.

If you ask people how long it takes to get a high ranking in Google, they will shake their head and say, "how long is a piece of string?". The truth is no one is quite sure. A ballpark figure that is bandied about is 3 months to get noticed. Why am I telling you this, you might ask. What I am going to do today is give you ideas that you will want to start writing at least three months before they are going to be searched for. For example, if you were going to write about Father's day, which is in June, you would want to write your article by March at the latest. This gives you a good chance of climbing into a Google ranking and getting noticed when the majority of people will be searching for your topic.

Update your Pages

Keeping your pages updated is very important. Google doesn't like to see pages that are written and abandoned. If you have pages already written, let's use our example of Father's day again, ensure you update and begin promoting at least one month before your page is likely to be searched for. If your target is in June, have that page updated by the beginning of May and promote frequently on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

It isn't necessary to do a rewrite of the entire article but make sure you have changed about a third of the text, updated any product links and promote!

Are you ready to write?

I hope this has given you a few ideas. You can see how easy it can be to brainstorm around a topic as simple as holidays. Remember this is just the tip of the iceberg with regards to holidays. There are many more official and unofficial ones, some are even wacky! Every week there seems to be a new 'appreciation day' for someone. So use this as a starting guide and get writing. If you would like to leave a comment, I would love to hear it.

Would you like to write here on Hubpages? Unlike some internet publishing sites, it's free to join and you can earn money by writing articles about a wide variety of topics that you choose.

Hubpages take care of the technical side. When someone clicks on an ad, you get money into your account. When your balance reaches the payout level, currently $50, you are paid by Hubpages. It's easy to use and there's a great bank of knowledgeable writers willing to help you with any questions you may have.

Everyone who writes online and makes money from it was where you are now, wondering if they should, could, or would be able to be a writer. They took that step and wrote just one page. Then they wrote another and kept at it. Now, they are making money not just from their current articles but also from the ones they wrote when they first started. How great is that!

Hi Kimberly,

I'm glad you found it useful. Yes, writing well ahead of the season or event gives your article time to settle in and gain some traction.

Thanks for reading and your comment.

Kimberly Lake from California on August 29, 2018:

Great tips. Thank you. I did not know to write early. I am going to try that. I read a few of you hubs. Very informative.

Robert Sacchi on December 21, 2017:

Thank you. Very good tips.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on December 21, 2017:

Hi Robert,

Yes, it would but you would want to start promoting it early on social media. Keep it updated as well throughout the year so the search engines see it as active.

Thanks for reading and your comment.

Robert Sacchi on December 21, 2017:

This article has some great ideas. The 3 month tip is a good one. If a Christmas article is posted in December, too late for a good Google showing, will the article have another chance at a good posting next December?

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on August 23, 2013:

I am pleased. All too often we think about an event when it is right around the corner and then it is too late from a promotional point of view.

Thank you for your visit and comment.

Rachel Horon on August 23, 2013:

This is a wonderful resource of ideas and topics for writing as well as important, often forgotten advice as to when to write in order to make it timely. I certainly feel inspired.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on July 28, 2012:

Hello Alex,

I always think making a list is a great idea. Because when writer's block happens you can easily refer back to it for that needed spark of inspiration.

Thanks for the comment.

AlexK2009 from Edinburgh, Scotland on July 28, 2012:

A great Idea. I will have to make my own lists of seasonal ideas. As well as timeless content.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on July 07, 2012:

Hello Flashmakeit,

I am so pleased you will find it useful for writing. I look forward to reading your next hub.

Have a great weekend and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

Thanks for all the great topic ideas they are useful.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on July 02, 2012:

Hello tirelesstraveler,

Sometimes a spark of inspiration is all that is needed to keep us writing.

Thanks for the comment, have a great evening.

Judy Specht from California on July 02, 2012:

Great ideas. Decided long ago that sometimes you need a little kick start to get ideas to write about. Thanks for the kick start:)

Ann Carr from SW England on July 02, 2012:

Ok, will do! Off to France so will settle to it when I get there.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on July 02, 2012:

You go for it. I can't wait to read it.

Ann Carr from SW England on July 01, 2012:

Funny you should say that, I've been thinking of silly days for a hub too! Go for it, or should we collaborate?!

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on July 01, 2012:

Hello Annart,

You may have given me an idea for another hub. I spent 20+ years in England, how about we invent national bubble and squeak day? Or Brussel sprouts admiration day. One more I can't resist, 'visit your local allotment week.'

Thank you for the votes and for stopping by.

Ann Carr from SW England on July 01, 2012:

Great ideas. I'm amazed at how many 'days' you have for one thing or another. We do have some of them in Britain of course but not nearly as many as that! Perhaps I should invent some! Voted up and useful. Very well written.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on June 27, 2012:

Hello Teaches12345,

Thanks for the vote. These ideas are to be used in conjunction with year-round (evergreen) topics as well. I'm pleased you found some inspiration in this hub.

Always a pleasure to hear from you.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on June 27, 2012:

Hello Jeff,

Thank you and yes now would be a good time to write that autumnal hub. I can't wait to read it.

Thanks for stopping by.
