Get a Higher Score on Your Hub

Prepare Your Article for Viewing

Hubs need regular attention and care.  Editing your articles is one of the most important things you can do to get a higher score.  Editing includes:  re-formatting; adding and deleting photos; correcting mispellings and generally making your article easier to read.

I think you know how important it is to keep our hubs clean, polished and shiny for public viewing. Look at it like this – You have just put your house on the market for sale. Passers-by come at anytime, unannounced. You want your house to show as if it were brand new, don’t you? Hubs should be shown like houses.

Often, I find myself editing my hubs. And I can just about guarantee you that if you spruce and spice up your hub, you will get an immediate increase in your hub score. Let me explain the seven things I do, and you can do also, to increase your score and bring in more traffic for your hub.

Edit Your Hub to Improve Your Score

Edit Your Hub to Improve Your Score

Seven Things You Can Do To Increase Your Hub Score

1. Change the Title. Titles are extremely important in drawing attention to your hub. Notice how your audience responds or not, to your hub. If little or no one is visiting, you might have a title problem. Change the wording or decrease the word count. And make it relatable and clearer to understand.

2. Add Suggested Links. This is a good one to use because you can link to other credible hubs on HubPages. We have some excellent authors here! I do not use all the suggested links because it can get to be a little much and somewhat distracting to the reader – so be discreet in using the link suggestion tool.

3. Remove Bad Photos. These are photos that look blurred and are hard to figure out. Great photos tell a story without words. I have removed photos. Photos are easy to delete when you are in edit mode on your hub.

4. Add Beautiful Pictures. I think some of the best photos are your own. The ones you have taken. One of my favorite photos is one that I took, and I cannot stop looking at the photo. It is bright, cheery, colorful and of high quality. If you have a good camera or cell phone camera, you can take your own photos – you will be surprised at the quality.

5. Comment Yourself. I was the first to comment on one of my hubs. No one else had commented. Since I added a voting poll capsule, I commented on the vote.

6. Reformat. Change the layout of your format to look balanced and pleasing to the eye. You can change your layout at any time. When you first publish your hub, you are asked to choose a layout, which is fine. Always remember that you can change the format or set up in edit.

7. Clean Up Errors and Typographical Errors. This is my last point. In this fast world of hubbing, we do make errors. You will probably find a few here. Hopefully, you will not find any that change the meaning of my message. Unintentional errors and simple typos that do not cause the reader to lose focus, are understandable.

Easy to Miss

When I read a hub, I kindly insert the missing word that someone left out. I am sure that we all do it. For example, “I am going to store” – you and I both know that the reader meant to say, “I am going to the store”. A few errors are acceptable, but when you see a dozen, you get turned off.

Typing Class

When I was in high school, I took typing all the way through 12th grade and was hired to work parttime as a Clerk Typist in my senior year. Then when I went to college, I had more typing, since I was a business major. Typing class was more than just typing. We learned to type with speed and were allowed only one or two errors to be granted an award. When I earned my 60 wpm (words per minute) award, I was elated. This is the reason why I am harping on having a tidy hub.

Very nice information. Thanks!

C-Bless from Canada on April 28, 2011:

G'day Treasureofheaven ... thank you for clarifying, and I do appreciate your welcome.

Sima Ballinger (author) from Michigan on April 26, 2011:

Hi C-Bless, you can edit your hub and add any words you want to. You can also edit your title - I have found this to be effective too. I will probably do another hub to add more factors to get a higher hub score. Thanks for finding me, and welcome to Hubpages.

C-Bless from Canada on April 26, 2011:

Great hub and very informative. As a newbie (joined 7 days ago), your informtion is so constructive. Can you really edit someone's hub to add a word like "the"?

Sima Ballinger (author) from Michigan on February 07, 2011:

revmjm, I tried to use an analogy that we can relate to in this hub. Glad you read too! There is a lot of good information on HubPages.

Have a good day,

Margaret Minnicks from Richmond, VA on February 07, 2011:

I really like the hub. It was very creative of you to use the house analogy. Also, the tips were ones I had not thought of; especially the one about commenting on your own hub. That never occurred to me even though I do use polls on some of them.

I am glad I read this hub. I think is is ONE of your best.

Sima Ballinger (author) from Michigan on January 31, 2011:

Hi Kristine,

Thanks for coming by. I am doing the same thing, looking at my titles too. You are welcome!

Really helpful! As I am a new Huber, I was looking for the tips to increase traffic to my hubs. So it will help in that way. As soon as possible, I will follow your suggestion.

Gail Sobotkin from South Carolina on December 11, 2010:

Great suggestions. A few days ago I spent a few hours reworking my hub titles, adding resources, photos, polls and news capsules and within a few hours the traffic to most of my hubs increased. I guess that's proof that your suggestions work.

Sima Ballinger (author) from Michigan on November 22, 2010:

imatellmuva, you are certainly welcome! I am glad that you can benefit from this information. Keep up the good work! Hey, I'm still new too, aren't I? lol....

I am fortunate I have a friend that will be honest me about my hubs. I once forgot to run spell check on it and he let me know pretty quick. Those are the kind of friends it is good to have. Thanks for the tips.

hudlife from South Carolina on November 19, 2010:

Great tips, Treasures! I will definitely use this as a checklist and go back through my existing hubs. Thanks!

bcatgray from United States of America on November 16, 2010:

Wonderful suggestions. I had no idea that you could pick and choose which suggested links to use. I will definitely try that out on my old and new hubs. Thanks again!

Ingenira on November 16, 2010:

Totally agreed with you, and I think it is a good idea to tidy up our hubs from time to time. Good suggestions on how to do it ! ;)

RevLady from Lantana, Florida on November 16, 2010:

Great suggestions! Thanks!

Forever His,

Dan Harmon from Boise, Idaho on November 15, 2010:

I make it a point to go back 2 months after publishing on every hub and clean it up. Around Nov. first I will re-read every hub published in Sept. That way the hub has faded from my mind and I don't tend to gloss over the errors nearly so badly.

I agree that it is important to present a visually pleasing hub, as error free as we can make it. This might mean getting rid of extra white space at the end of a text capsule or putting in quality photos. It certainly means cleaning up spelling and grammar errors, as you point out.
