My HubPages History

I have been writing articles on HubPages since January 12th, 2012. That's almost nine years now. It's hard to believe it has been that long. I love writing on HubPages for a variety of reasons, including:

  • It gives me a writing platform on which I can choose whatever topics I want to write about
  • I have made some wonderful friends who also write on HubPages
  • HubPages helps me earn extra money

A few times during the course of my time here on HubPages I have either initiated or taken part in HubPages writing challenges. Especially when I first started, participating in a HubPages Challenge was a great way to publish a lot of articles in a short amount of time, and therefore make more connections on HubPages, and also earn more money, rather than just writing an article when I got around to it.

Somehow knowing I was being challenged and doing it with other people was a really good incentive to start writing and keep it going. It would be embarrassing for me to take part in a challenge and not meet the end goal.

Various HubPage Challenges

Over the years I have participated in various Hubpages Challenges. Some have been the write 30 articles in 30 days, 10 articles in 10 days, and then when life got a bit crazy, there was one that was 10 articles in 30 days. Although I participated in each of those writing challenges, I didn't reach my goal in all of them. But each of them helped me write more articles for HubPages than I would have without these particular challenges.

I am very goal-oriented so giving me a challenge I can sink my teeth into is a good way to get me motivated to accomplish something. I am sure there are many of you that have been given a challenge personally or at work that is just not very exciting to you, or the end result or prize is something that has no meaning for you. But if you are here on HubPages, maybe a HubPage challenge is just what you need to get your writing juices flowing.

My HubPages Challenge for January, 2021

So you may be wondering exactly what I have in mind for this current challenge? My life is pretty busy right now, but I love to write and I have been meaning to write some more articles on HubPages for quite some time now. I even have a lot of photos on my phone from as far back as two years ago, that I took specifically so I could write an article on HubPages and use these photos.

So here us my challenge for the next month:

Write 10 HubPages articles in 31 days...which means the month of January.

Will You Join Me in My HubPages Writing Challenge?

In the past, part of the fun of doing a challenge on HubPages was that other writers would join in and we would encourage each other along the way. I also updated my hub as to how things were going. I plan to do this with this hub as well.

During the month I will give an update each week as to how I am doing. And you can come back and read how I am doing and what I have written about.

If you choose to join me, you can also write your first article about being part of this challenge, and voila, you will have your first article out of the 10 written.

So, now that you have read about how I am challenging myself to write 10 articles for HubPages during the month of January 2021, who will join me? Please leave a comment below if you want to join in.

Tips for Writing Ten Articles in This Challenge

  1. Write good quality articles: Just because you are participating in a challenge to write a lot of articles in a one month period, don't write poorly just to get something posted. Bad writing won't get much traffic to your articles and could possibly embarrass you when read by others.
  2. Make sure your articles are long enough Try to aim for 1,200 - 1,500 words in your articles. This will pass the review by the powers that be on HubPages and also attract more readers through Google to come read your articles.
  3. Include lots of extras like photos, polls, a video, etc. these make your article more interesting than just a bunch of words. This again attracts more readers.
  4. Jot down possible ideas for articles: Think you don't have enough ideas for 10 articles? Start a list of ideas now and add to it over the next few days. Look on your phone to see some of your photos and see if any of them are worthy of an article. We adopted a new rescue dog in March and I have tons of photos of her on my phone, so you can expect to see lots of photos of her in an article coming soon!

Ready, Set, Go...

Whether you are writing on HubPages to earn money, hone your writing skills, or make new friends and followers who enjoy your articles, doing a writing challenge will help you in all of those areas.

And so, I am off! In a minute I will be hitting the publish tab and my first article often this month will be published! Easy as that. Who will be joining me? Good luck to us all, and happy writing!

End of Week 1

Okay everyone, it is the end of the first week of this HubPages Challenge. I am not doing as well as I had expected, but I am working on it. I completed this first article last week, and have been working on my second article, but it is not completed yet.

Writing a quality article for Hubpages takes a lot of time. I have been spending time working on the article, but I didn't have permission to use all of the photos I have planned for the article so had to track that down.

I also need to find photos on my phone and sort through them because I have SO many to use for this article. And of course, I have to write the article as well. My goal is to have it finished by tomorrow, 1/11. But technically I am behind because I should have 2.5 articles done by now. I do have notes for two other articles so at least that is a bit more progress. By next weekend my goal is to have completed five articles. I guess I have my work cut out for me this week!

For the rest of you who have decided to join me in this challenge, I am curious as to how things are going for you?

End of Week 2

Ugh, this challenge to write 10 new articles this month is not going as well as I had hoped. It is now January 18th and I just finished publishing my third article. I have had some issues getting my photos off my phone and onto my Chromebook, but I think I have it all figured out now.

So, I have 13 days left to publish seven articles. I know I can do it, but it just means I have to work a little harder over the next two weeks.

Stay tuned for the next update...

End of Week 3

I think at this point I might have bit off more than I can chew. But don't worry, I am not throwing in the towel yet.

At the end of my third week, I have written five out of the ten articles I need to write for the challenge. Today is 1/25/21 and I have six days left to write five articles. I have a few articles already started. I hope I can complete this challenge, but only time will tell.

I will be back with my final report in six days. I hope that those who are joining me in this challenge are doing well, and better than I am?!

End of Week 4: The End of the Challenge

At the beginning of this 10 Hubs in 10 Days Challenge, I had high hopes of accomplishing my goal of writing 10 Hubs (articles) in 31 days. It didn't seem too hard as it would average out to 2.5 hubs a week. But the reality of this challenge hit me at the end of the third week. I only had five hubs written and I was three-quarters of the way through the challenge.

And then panic set in, and messed with my head. Instead of motivating me to write a lot last week, it made me stagnate. I did get one more hub published, which is better than none.

So the end result is that I wrote 6 hubs instead of 10, BUT I honestly believe that is 5 more than I would have written if I hadn't challenged myself. I like a challenge and without it, I just plod along, intending to write but not actually getting down to it.

I have set a goal for myself to be at 300 hubs by January 15, 2022. I think I will continue to challenge myself to write 10 hubs in a month throughout the year, and choose the months where there are 31 days. Mentally, that extra day gives me an extra grace period.

According to my profile page, I have 251 hubs published and therefore need 49 more in the next 11 months in order to meet my goal. I am feeling optimistic about this and sure I can do it. I will give you an update after 1/15/2022.

If you joined me in this challenge, how did you do?

Yes, this is a great place to get exposure. Over the past few years, I was able to acquire 4 long term clients who discovered my writing through the HubPages website.

So glad you are up for the challenge. I always feel such a sense of accomplishment when I finish a challenge on HubPages! How are you doing so far?

Bill Holland,

I don't think you need an incentive to write more articles on Hubpages, ha ha! Two a week is probably more than most hubbers ever manage!

Rodric Anthony,

So glad you are joining the challenge. How is it going for you so far?

Lora Hollings,

Rescue is such a rewarding thing. I am working on Jenny's article today. That's neat that she looks like your foster dog Ginny!

Chatra Ram,

Um, thanks?!

Lora Hollings on January 03, 2021:

Wonderful article, Karen. Unfortunately, I don't have as much time as I wish to write articles. This certainly is a worthy goal! I love your rescue dog, Jenny. I look forward to reading an article about her. She reminds me so much of a fear dog that I fostered for two years. I named her Ginger but we called her Ginny for short. She is doing so well now in her forever home with a dog very close to her age and 2 cats. She was adopted by a lovely family who shares many photos with me of Ginny now and her great life! Bless you for adopting this girl. She reminds me so much of Ginny!

Karen, I followed Bill Holland here! I will join the challenge. I was looking for something to write about today not that my vision is clearing up and saw Bill's comment in my feed. Game on!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on January 02, 2021:

I don't think I can meet the challenge. Two per week is all I have time for, but good luck with your goal, Happy HP Anniversary, and Happy New Year!
