My HubPages Earnings and Progress for 2012

I often watch a lot of Adventure Time while writing for HP.

My Story

I started out on HP in July of 2010, writing up a whopping total of 4 articles (please, hold your applause). Going back and reviewing my work today, I wasn't too pleased with my writing even though two of these articles proved to be a couple of my best ever, averaging around 300 views per month. I edited and revised my articles and moved on.

After being discouraged when I hadn't earned a single penny in a month (the joke was on me since I didn't had an AdSense account), I quit writing and left HubPages to start my small business. I started to get interested in making money online once more in August of 2011 when I was reading extensively on smartpassiveincome.com. At some point there was a mention of InfoBarrel, and i signed up with the interest of earning online. After staying with InfoBarrel for about a month and putting up about 10 articles (this time with an AdSense account), I saw a couple pennies flow in. My faith in earning online had been restored, but I felt as if there was something missing with InfoBarrel. Unnerved for some reason, I remembered HubPages.

In November of 2011 I came back to HubPages, learning about the new Ad Program. I immediately switched it on and added my AdSense account, and the next day I saw that I had earned .01 cents overnight. I was amazed! I decided to leave it for a week and see what else I would accumulate, happy to see that I was earning around .10 to .18 cents per day with my four old articles. It was then that I decided to try to make some extra passive income online with HubPages. In November, I increased my number of articles to 21 and took a two month break. Still, I saw earnings!

In my short amount of time back at HubPages (I write this as of Apr/1/2012), I can definitely say when I first signed up, I was taking this site for granted. I've grown a lot in the time I've been here and am not only happy with my earnings, but just even having the ability to earn online, and the community is wonderful and full of great people who have taught me so much! I plan on sticking around for much, much longer because of all of this.

For 2012, I have a couple goals: First of all, I'd like to increase my overall article count to 100. My ultimate goal for this year though would be to make enough money per month to help finance myself an almost-new car by January 2013 (around $200/month), but that's a longshot! We'll see how far I progress to this goal by the end of the year.

With all of that said (apologies for the book there), here is a month-to-month account of my HubPages earnings for 2012. I'll be updating this article at the end of every month, so check back! If you'd like to skip through all the reading and see just the figures, scroll to the bottom of this article.

January 2012

I wasn't active in January due to being burned out from all the articles I wrote back in November, but i still saw some earnings. With my 21 articles, I saw a total earning of $3.11 for the month of January. Not much, but I was happy!

Favorite February Article

February 2012

I pulled myself out of my slump and managed to publish 20 articles this month, bringing my total to 41. I was happy to see that my average earnings jumped from about .10 cents to about .25 cents per day. I finished out the month with a total earning of $8.66, more than double of what I earned in January. Woo!

March 2012

Wow! This month was really good for me. I only managed to publish 10 articles, bringing my grand total to 51 so far, but I hit a couple milestones for myself. First of all, I officially had 50 articles published. Second, I earned my first whole dollar in one day! Awesome! My average daily earnings jumped to about .40 cents per day, and I finished out the month with a total of $15.42 in earnings. I'm hoping that I can make $30 next month!

Favorite April Article

April 2012

Even though I didn't meet my goal of $30 in April, I did get an even better surprise when I logged onto HubPages near the end of April -- I was accepted into the HP Apprentice Program! Woohoo! I start in May, and I will keep the Apprentice Program earnings separate from my regular earnings (or I just wont include them at all) so I don't confuse anyone. Also, I hit my first payout ever this month and I finished out the month with a total earning of $28.71 and 61 articles in total. I'm expecting to see around $40 next month with 71 articles ;)

Favorite May Article

May 2012

I was so close to reaching my $40 goal for May! I managed to write 19 articles and received my first check of $63.63 from HP to my PayPal account. Felt great! I'm hoping for June that I can earn $50, which should be totally doable. The first month of the Apprentice Program was awesome, and I earned $115 with it. I wont include that in the earnings table, though. Here's looking at another 5 months of fun with the AP!

Favorite June Article

June 2012

This month was a good month with the ad program and apprentice program! I managed to earn an extra $60 with AP, and around $45 otherwise in earnings. I've come across a new niche idea that I'm spending a lot of time on, so I will not be putting out many articles. This means I'll probably have to drop out of the AP, but it was a fun run and I recommend it to anyone!

July 2012

This month wasn't too great for the ad program. For a lot of us at HP, there's been some Google craziness, which is a huge part of the reason I haven't been around much; I've been working on my other side project which is going really well, and I think I'll unveil it here once it's finished. Otherwise, I only made like $27 this month, BUT I did manage to get my first sale from Amazon (I didn't have the account linked up right for almost a whole year but fixed it about a month or two ago). I managed to bring in $63.63 in Amazon sales alone from HP, and wow, blew my mind!

Thanks for the July update - well done!

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on July 13, 2012:

Good going! Looks like HubPages is the best place to earn as an online writer.

umeraziz on July 12, 2012:

great hub.. thanks for sharing information. its gonna helpful for young hubbers.,,

Jen Smith from UK on July 12, 2012:

Interesting to see your progress. I was doing similarly till Panda hit and I am pretty much back to square one still! I am working away though and hopefully can pull it back up in time.

nickbardo from Miami, FL on July 09, 2012:

Holy smokes! OK, time to active my adsense account!

lkolodgy from Pellston Michigan on July 09, 2012:

Good for you! I am sure you will be able to meet your goals. This somewhat sounds like my story, I just published a hub today as a matter of fact after receiving notice that I had earned a whole 0.5cents...lol..it's a start. I was writing articles a year ago and becoming discouraged too because I wasn't earning but I have an active ad sense acct and I will start writing articles again and maybe updating some of the old ones and see where it takes me...can't hurt right? I will definitely be following your progress :) What time is it??? Adventure Time! LOL

Shaniqua Harris from Philadelphia, PA on July 09, 2012:

I would like to thank you for your honest report of your earnings. You just do not see that too much on the internet nowadays. I just got involved with hub pages and it is good to see what I got myself into and how much work I would have to do to see income from it. Thank you again and best of luck.

Jenna Pope from Southern California on July 09, 2012:

This was very encouraging. HubPages is more of a long-term investment. But it WILL pay off eventually! Voted up.

Sethughes on July 04, 2012:

Great hub. I love your honesty and the fact that you were happy to see just a few cents. This is good for people who may be discouraged by their earnings early on.

Thank you!

Mike Pugh from New York City on July 04, 2012:

I like your article and your hubpages experience thus far, mine was quite different indeed, but it goes to show that once you was determined to focus on your writing here it was sure to begin paying off over time, and I commend you for sticking in there & hanging on to your account. Voted up and out!

kelleyward on July 04, 2012:

thanks for sharing your story here. It's great to see how much people can really earn at Hubpages! Looking forward to watching your progress. Kelley

fjpteach from Humble, TX on June 18, 2012:

Thanks for the information! I was really curious as to how much I could make on here, but I couldn't find anything. I will definitely be checking back to see your progress.

Bredavies on June 18, 2012:

Wow nice work!

Heather Jacobs on June 17, 2012:

Great article! I was really interested in what someone could reasonably earn with hubpages and you answered that nicely. Thank you!

Andrew from Rep Boston MA on June 17, 2012:

Its good to see you being so successful with Hubpages! Just keep up the great work (like you always do) and things are sure going to come your way. Revising and updating older hubs is one of the HARDEST things to do on hubpages, I know...I neglect it all the time. Hopefully ill be driven at some point to update many of my old hubs.

Thanks for sharing and best of luck!

mizzknowitall on June 17, 2012:

I just started and I really appreciate the advise

jentaylorsc on June 17, 2012:

This is a very open and helpful article about your earnings on HubPages. It is always helpful to see how others are doing in comparison to the number of Hubs they have. I would love to hear more about your experiences with the Apprenticeship program too as it seems really interesting. Thanks again for all the information.

Jennifer Massey from Spain and England on June 17, 2012:

Thank you for your encouraging article. For someone who has just joined, your article is real encouragement.

Kathleen Cochran from Atlanta, Georgia on June 17, 2012:

Anything folks learn from the apprentice program would really be appreciated by the rest of us. I don't actually understand the concept of the program. Seems like of HP staff knew the secrets to making money here they would share it with the rest of us. You may be our only sources to the secrets of success - besides what is already written here almost daily.

cfjots from Conway, SC on June 17, 2012:

You have shown me that I am on the right track and if I keep writing about what I love things will work out. Thank you for your article.

Crazzykylex from Incredible India! on June 17, 2012:

Hey, you didn't mention the traffic. Bad manners!

But... despite having more than 500 pageviews, I haven't made a single cent! Is this a sign of a LOSER?

jasontoheal on June 17, 2012:

great work. i love it when people share their progress. keeps us all encouraged.

smalltownlady from North Carolina on June 17, 2012:

Stumbled across this website yesterday when on Monster looking for a job. I've always LOVED writing, so I had to try it out. Thank you for the informative piece. Such a great introduction for a newbie such as myself!

Rodric Anthony from Surprise, Arizona on June 17, 2012:

You inspired me. I did no make the AP program, but I am looking forward to the training.

Lisa Sumner from Vancouver on June 16, 2012:

Awesome Hub! Yours is the first one I have read that really details each month's earnings. I too, began with Infobarrel, quickly got discouraged and found HubPages. I've never looked back. In fact, shortly after signing up, one of my hubs made Hub of the Day! Then I also got accepted into the Apprenticeship Program (this is month 1 for me!) so any tips on that would be very helpful!

Congrats to you, this is so inspiring! I hope I can get on a roll like you have.

Voted up, useful, interesting and awesome!

Shanique E on June 16, 2012:

Excellent article i have learned a lot! I am new to HubPages I really enjoy writing , it makes it so easy with the easy edits, i am at penny's stage and still excited lol all the best:)

cityalice on June 16, 2012:

Very cool. Wish you best of luck in the following months. It has multiplied 10X in the past six months, hope it does the following in the next 6 months.

lj gonya on June 16, 2012:

Well, you've inspired me to keep plugging along. Great hub and good work!

Kathleen Cochran from Atlanta, Georgia on June 16, 2012:

The first month of the Apprentice Program was awesome, and I earned $115 with it.

What I don't understand is this: If the HubPages staff knows enough about how to make money on HP to share it with those in the Apprentice Program, why don't they share it with all of us? Just asking.

Good luck to you and congrats on your success.

Bill from Greensburg Pennsylvania on June 16, 2012:

I too did the same I wrote an article and left here. Then came back and like you found a couple, of cents made. So then decided to try again and now I have been doing fairly good. this is a great hub.

Jayant Row from Vasai East on June 15, 2012:

Encouraging article. I have come back to HP after a fairly long layoff and found that the over twenty articles (33 in total) I have written over the past month is already putting over $3 into my account every week. Am eager to reach the $50 mark and get paid.

Novascotiamiss from Nova Scotia, Canada on June 15, 2012:

Congratulations and thanks for sharing all this information with us. It gives me hope and the drive that maybe one day, I will make more than just a few cents after all.

maheshpatwal from MUMBAI on June 15, 2012:

Themagician I'm very happy that you are slowly and steadily reaching on the goal of earning USD 200 per month.... your hub gives fellow novice hubbers like me an inspiration to stay connected to HP. I'll have also set a target of publishing 50 hubs by the end of this year for myself. hope i'll be able to meet that.

tipstoretireearly from New York on June 15, 2012:

Interesting to see how someone else is doing. The really interesting aspect of the program is that your earnings provide useful feedback on the quality of your hubs.

Russ Moran - The Write Stuff from Long Island, New York on June 15, 2012:

Thanks again for the service that you are providing to all of us with your monthly updates.

Mandar Karandikar from Ratlam, India on June 15, 2012:

Hi

Wonderful hub. Nice to know about your experience. I have to wait till I'm 18 to earn via Adsense. But its great to learn about it through such hubs. Its quite inspiring.

Thanks.

Jiwan on June 15, 2012:

Very inspirational and i salute your comeback. I am also an owner of a blog and internet entrepreneur. There were a lot of comparison between hubpages and squidoo and i am fan of both. My main motive for hubs creation with respect to creating unique contents for my blog was only for creating good and high quality backlinks, but the way hubpages allow to share adsense revenue is not only effective for blog owners but also for them who do not have their own blog or business model. But, one question always strike my mind, is there anyone who is making at least 100$ per day via hubpages??

Charlotte B Plum on June 14, 2012:

Thank you for sharing this information with us! I too had similar frustrations when i first started here, with regard to earnings. But I must say that you have really inspired me, as I have not earned more than 15 bucks a months, despite me having more than 100 hubs.

JP Carlos from Quezon CIty, Phlippines on June 14, 2012:

It's nice to earn from something you love doing.

RonnaPennington from Arkansas on June 14, 2012:

@Livingabroad, Thanks for the comment! As for the "time" question, haha, at the moment I'm spending summer getting ready for college, having just graduated high school so I have lots of free time on my hands. I'll be slowing down considerably though soon, but I'll still be putting out at least 8 articles a month :)

Also, a good music playlist helps me write faster! Haha.

Muhammad Royhan from Indonesia on June 14, 2012:

Great to see success stories on hub pages! You inspire us all I'm sure!

I will be following your progress with interest, keep the updates coming. Up and interesting.

By the way, how do you find the time to write that many articles? Surely there aren't enough hours in the day?!

Great hub and very encouraging for those who are just starting writing or who have been round awhile but haven't seen any earnings to speak off ... sometimes it is easy to get cynical about earning money online and hearing from real people on Hubpages that it is happening is great... thanks for sharing

Great response on your hub, I hope to be earning a good amount each month too, thanks for inspiring me to write more hubs.

forthewords from California on June 12, 2012:

I'm brand new to HP, so I especially thank you for your honesty in regards to the earnings. It's a realistic view of what I can expect. As other comments mentioned, the few cents I've earned the last few days are unexpectedly exciting for me. It was refreshing to hear the same from you! Thanks, I'll be following your hubs as well.

jenp123 on June 12, 2012:

This is a great topic for a hub. I'm glad you're making earning progress. What do you think you did, in particular, to increase your earnings? I've had a similar experience in which I was disappointed by my lack of income at first, but now I'm quite happy with the results. Thanks for sharing!

T4an from Toronto, Ontario on June 12, 2012:

Great hub and it shows your determination is working for you. I made my first $.03 cents last night. Not sure how but I did. It is a good feeling!

topaz blue on June 12, 2012:

Hello

Great Hub!I signed up about 17 months ago but did not have the confidence or ideas at that point to write any hubs. It's really only over the last month that confidence and ideas regarding articles have come to me, and now I feel as though there is no looking back.

Good to hear that you have had earnings from this which continue and even increase each month.

I will hold your goal in mind and think of you as having the car of your dreams. It's everything that you want and more. Reach for the stars!

Many thanks

Great hub, and thank you for being so honest and informative. Us new to the pages can definitely use this kind of honest info.

Timothy Whitt from New Jersey on June 12, 2012:

Great article, great advice. Like you I had been a Hub member since 2007 and only posted a couple of articles. I then tried other sites but have returned to Hub. I hope to add more articles until I build a residual income. Good Luck

Penelope Hart from Rome, Italy on June 12, 2012:

Thanks so much for your accounting and breakdown of how it all went/and goes for you. I'm so encouraged, though I still only earn cents each day and nowhere near the dollar mark. Sometimes I wonder if it's the subjects I write about, but I can't seem to earn much more than 10-15 cents a day. It could be disheartening until I read an account like yours.

noenhulk on June 11, 2012:

I don't have any idea either how adsense really works on each hubs. Hubpages ad program however has daily stat so I know Ive got pennies everyday. How I wish I could increase it by at least 5 dollars daily... have to write more more hubs I guess.

Maree Michael Martin from Northwest Washington on an Island on June 11, 2012:

Congrats on the apprentice program! Great idea to keep track of your hub progress. Very helpful indeed, thanks.

johnsmitht on June 11, 2012:

Thanks for the response Author. I guess HP then takes 40% out of the 68% from the Adsense earnings.

Kay B (author) from Tampa, FL on June 11, 2012:

@Johnsmitht, I'm not quite sure I understand the question, and if I did I don't know anything about HP's cut of Adsense. I do know that the HP Ad Program ads that show earn them 40% while you keep the other 60%. As for Adsense? Not a clue.

johnsmitht on June 11, 2012:

$39 from 80+ articles. Not bad.

Would you happen to know if Hubpages had disclosed how much revenue we can get from Adsense from the clicks that we get from the site?

I heard that Adsense normally gives out 68% in revenue to its publishers. I am curious to know how much cut Hubpages take (if there is any).

Philippe Allaire from Camrose, Alberta on June 11, 2012:

Those earnings sounds just about right, can't wait to see the list complete.

JimMiles on June 11, 2012:

I just broke the ten hub mark, and had questions which your hub answered. Voted up, and THANKS!

Kay B (author) from Tampa, FL on June 11, 2012:

@Lisas-thoughts101, oh God no! Whatever you earn you keep -- it's just that you don't get paid until you reach at least $50 for the month. If you earned $25 one month, the earnings will roll over to the next month so you'll need to earning another $25 to reach payout.

Lisas-thoughts101 from Northeast Texas on June 11, 2012:

Thanks for your honest hub. Congratulations on being chosen for the apprentice program. Great job! I thought you had to earn 50.00 in one month or your earnings went away and you started from scratch?? Is that not the case?

Congratulations! I wish you lots more success. I hope to follow in your footsteps.

Frank Hobson from Dumaguete City on June 09, 2012:

@TheMagician I am sure you will agree that the best way to make money is to show up high in the search engines. If you place a vid from Youtube into your content you are getting link juice from Youtube. The higher the amount of people visiting your Hub or Youtube video the stronger they each become.

Youtube has a Pagerank of 9 and it is a "dofollow." It will help make your Hub show up higher in a Google search. Each URL has its own Pagerank so you initial URL with Youtube will have a Pagerank of 0. But with some coaxing and hard work it get a Pagerank of 3 fairly quickly.

Then build a few links to your Hubpages that are from authority sites. Start with Wordpress.com which has a Pagerank of 9 and is also dofollow. Point a link from Wordpress to your Hubpage. Point a link from your video to your Wordpress blog. Run adsense via sites.google.com with your blog. This is blog is also has a pagerank of 9 and is dofollow. Make sure to insert your Youtube vids in your blog.

Please be advised that each Hub your create has its own URL that can be promoted in terms of links.

Best of Luck,

Frank H.

I really appreciate what you've done here. The transparency with an "average user"'s earnings gives me a good deal of hope. I literally *just* started here on HP, but am I looking forward to becoming a part of what looks like a great community. Kay B (author) from Tampa, FL on June 08, 2012:

@onlinerepuations, I've never tried tying Hubs to YouTube videos before, that sounds like an interesting idea. I do know it's possible to make a revenue with YouTube though, as I do already (it's menial and not worth mentioning though).

Frank Hobson from Dumaguete City on June 08, 2012:

@TheMagician thanks for your comment. I apologize as I do see you making comments. I wonder if you tied some of your Hubs into Youtube if it would help. I get my videos done on Fiverr for $5 each. I believe you can also make a revenue with YT. Just a suggestion.

Kay B (author) from Tampa, FL on June 08, 2012:

@Onlinereputations, it's pretty tough to keep up with all the comments on this Hub... it sort of really took off a few days ago, seeing comments almost every hour. I don't think there'd be a difference in earnings, though.

Bill De Giulio from Massachusetts on June 08, 2012:

Excellent. I love reading about success stories. Patience and persistence are the keys. Great job.

Frank Hobson from Dumaguete City on June 08, 2012:

I notice that you do not go back to this Hub and interact with people making comments. I realize you have all kinds of Hubs and wonder if it would make any difference in your earnings if tried to identify with people who have commented in your Hubs.

crazyteacher from Virginia on June 08, 2012:

When I recently joined HP, I was anticipating making more than what you presented in your hub. Thank you for your honesty, so that I can stay realistic about this. I guess as the saying goes, I better not quit the day job! Thanks for the information!

This is really an inspiring hub- a ray of hope for all who were wondering whether they are in the right track. Thanks for this honest hub.

It's great to see your progress. Unfortunately, I will have to wait another month before I can apply for an Adsense account as my hubpages profile isn't 6 months old (requirement of Adsense). However, seeing your progress has instilled some faith in me that I would be able to earn a bit through this site!

Thank you for posting this. It shows your dedication and ambition and sometimes others need to see that in order for them to remember their own.

I found your article very interesting! I am brand new, no hubs posted yet. I am reading others to get the feel for things, although I have used hub pages as a great source for anything and everything in the past, now I am looking with my writer eyes on! I will be following your progress, along with my own. It's nice to have some idea of what I can expect pay wise. Thanks, Di
