The majority of organizations have allowed their employees to work from home. Even I have been working from home as a digital entrepreneur since November 2019.

I know many employees are finding it difficult to adjust to this new routine. In the beginning, they all felt good but as time passed they started feeling more tired and exhausted.

So, in this article, I am going to share some good tips as to how we can become more productive working from home. And I hope you will find them useful and insightful.

Split Your Daily Task Into Small Chunks

Set A Schedule

One of the biggest problems employees are facing is related to the tight schedule. When I talked with my corporate colleagues in Delhi they are saying there is no fixed schedule as to when to start and when to stop.

Bosses can call anytime and check the work status. A meeting can happen early morning or even late at night. This is the same situation with many teachers working in a private school. Earlier they are working from 9 am to 6 pm. Now, they don’t know what is the actual schedule.

Therefore, it is compulsory that every company and employees should set some rules regarding timings. If you are working from home make sure you set some timelines for yourself and for your office work.

Split Your Daily Task Into Small Chunks

It has been observed that humans cannot focus and concentrate between 45 to 90 minutes. That’s why Hollywood movies are not longer than 90 minutes.

If you are working from home then make sure you split your task into small chunks as per the time available. Don’t try to do many things in one go. If you are working on office work then during that time don’t watch movies or play video games.

Focus on one task at one time and break big projects into small parts. In this way, you will be more productive and you will not lose focus. If you will follow such techniques then within a few days it will become your regular habit.

Take Proper Breaks

When you will work from home then you will get a lot of calls and emails from clients or maybe from other departments or your boss. As we know responding to them is necessary and on time.

But along with these, your schedule should include time for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and regular breaks.

If you are planning to work from 9 am to 7 pm then make sure you take regular breaks in between. Otherwise, your productivity will go down. Taking regular breaks will recharge you and will boost your morale.

I am working from home and I take regular breaks to recharge myself and that’s why I can work for longer hours. Otherwise, there is no secret at all.

Remove Distractions

Many employees complain that they cannot work properly from home. Actually working from home is not the problem. But the problem lies in the distractions all around.

So, they can do the following things to remove distractions:
a) Switch off the television set
b) Switch off the music system
c) Put mobile in the listen mode but keep in front of your eyes
d) Try to work in a quiet place
e) Tell others not to disturb you during working hours unless it’s urgent
f) Most important don’t invite any friends or relative during working hours

If you are planning to increase your productivity make sure you work in a clean place. Where you work and in what condition place a great role in your outcome.

There is a simple rule - if you are working in a bad environment, you may produce a bad outcome. If you work in the best environment, this will motivate you to give your best.

Due to work pressure, job, etc., we sacrifice these attributes but this is an important factor for any employee. Just remember the best soil and the best seeds will give the best grains.

Plan Your Work In Advance

There is a saying - you should do the most difficult and important task first thing in the morning. And once that is done, you can take care of other less important tasks.

To do this, it is important that you write down your worklist a day before at night. Every night before I go to sleep, I sit quietly for 10 minutes in my office and see what important tasks I have to complete.

Then I take my notebook and write down all the important and urgent tasks at night only. And when I wake up the next day, I know exactly what I have to do and complete the major assignments the first thing in the morning.

Actually, if you are getting a chance to work from home it is a competitive advantage for you from many angles. You don’t have to spend money on traveling and you can actually be saving a lot of time commuting. Yes, it will be difficult to work from home as we are used to working with colleagues and bosses around us. But learn to get used to it. Be happy to see your family with you and just spend some quality time so you can get paid on time.

Thank you, Liz, for your comments. Yes, many companies have allowed their employees to work from home, including Google, Facebook, etc. In India, many big companies are following the 1/3 attendance rule. Let's hope for the best and use this opportunity in the best possible manner.

This is a very helpful relevant article especially for this time. I wonder how many will now continue to work from home after the pandemic is over.
