Hubpages: How Do We Get Traffic Back? Here's How!

Free Download Funny Cats Wallpaper I added Caption From Roflbot.

How do we get back the traffic to Hubpages? That's the question on everybody's lips. Over the last few weeks Google has been once again dropping our Hubpage traffic. For some reason Hubpages seems to have dropped off the map. so why?

I did a bit of investigating.

First of all I took a look at a few video clips from Google + about how Google works.

Long story short, one of them stated that Google will only put two of each site on Google's front page. For example two Squidoo, two Hubpages and so on, so as not to overwhelm page one with a single site.

So on this assumption I took a look. And after throwing out some random titles that I made up on the spot, I found that none of the Hubs came up at all. Try it, you may not know the name of a certain hub but you can bet your doodahs that Hubpages is usually on page one or two.

Not any more. I searched and searched right down to about page 5 before I got a random Hub.

So, whats it all about?

Is Google Being Picky?

Well that's my opinion. Like anything else in life and especially on the Internet, things change. And the new kids on the block are starting to take over.

Like a sinking ship we Hubbers and many more from other sites seem to be jumping ship. Okay we may not be leaving here, but we are all on the Bubblews band wagon.

And who can blame us? We all want to earn money, and Bubblews is a great way to get quick cash in an honest way.

But there's only one thing that leaves a sour taste for me.

I love Hubpages, and the people, and the crew, and the....well you get my point.

So, come on guys lets get this site back to the top. It's the best one out there.

I understand that we have always had the ups and downs when writing for the Internet. And Hubpages has always been one of the best sites on here.

I still believe that writing evergreen hubs is the way to go. Surely Google will realise that the short spammy sites are going to fade into oblivion pretty soon.

So the best way to write is to keep doing what we do. But maybe with a little tweak here and there it can recover much more quickly.

First of all Adverts.

I have noticed a down slide ever since Hubpages have taken away our Ads.

Okay within 24 hours they are up and running, but I get the funny feeling that somewhere in hyperspace, behind the scenes or Google just having a grumble, this is messing the whole thing up.

Okay, it takes a few days for a hub to get 'placed' by Google. So why is it that since our Ads have to wait, our readers have slumped?

Apart from the fact it looks a darn mess without the Ads. Surely Hubpages knows by now who are the good writers and who are the scammers? We have been on here long enough.

In plain English, give us our Ads back. Please?

Tags and Keywords.

Doing my Sherlock Holmes bit around the site, I noticed that when my screen didn't download properly I could see behind the photos and articles. And guess what? yes.

Millions of Tags and keywords! Each and every article or photo had so many tags, (words that define the article) that in fact some of the articles were shorter than the hidden tags!

So why can't we have our tag boxes back? I know you told us that you do the tags, and now Google only goes by the keywords in the actual article, but if that's true,

WHY DOES ALL THE TOP ARTICLES HAVE HIDDEN TAGS BEHIND THEM?

One rule for them and one rule for us.

Layout.

If you look at another Site's layout, its totally different to ours. Yes they do sometimes have photos, and yes they do have lots of writing. But.....

It really all depends on what they are writing about.

I took a look at quite a few different Articles. Many of them just had writing, with a few links or Ads in between.

Obviously the Celeb Sites had loads of photos. This I believe is purely because the people who read about the celebs only want to read a little bit then look at the pictures.

The serious ones however, just had the facts. And that was all.

hubpages-how-do-we-get-traffic-back-heres-how

How Many Words?

And last but not least, these days many people want a quick fix. Literally. They want the facts and that's it.

I think the days of very long articles are at an end. Don't get me wrong, I don't think we should just write a few paragraphs and that's it. But surely 500 to 700 hundred words will do it.

Hopefully our readers will come back. And even more to the point Google will stop pushing and pulling us all over the place.

Hubpages is worth the effort.

But maybe its time for a change of style.

Great analysis and observations, you are so right long articles do not catch the attention of readers, they just do not have the patience to read it. As you say 400 -700 words are just enough. Getting tags back is a great idea!

Nell Rose (author) from England on August 22, 2014:

Thanks pocono, lol! love your last idea! and yes you are totally right! thanks for the added info and help, have a great weekend.

John Fisher from Easton, Pennsylvania on August 22, 2014:

@Neil Rose et al: One way of getting some extra traffic is that when you write an article on HubPages, write another releveant article on EZine Articles and backlink it to your HubPage article in the resource box and always make sure when you write an article either place, you promote it on your social networks. Another way that seems to get some good response is to write an article that is contrary to most people's opinions and beliefs, because if you piss people off they will read your articles and comment on them.

I think you are correct Peg. No one has much spare time these days.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on August 21, 2014:

Hi Nell, I think you're on to something here. We have lost traffic for sure. I remember when at the side of the page there was a boast of 50 million views daily. The staff has said they believe that even if it's not broken, they want to fix it. (In the recent blog on the new editing feature). That is a strange philosophy to me. It was working, now it's not. Perhaps it's that most readers want to read something quick and informative rather than lengthy and full of media clips and polls. Maybe not.

Hi Nell, I have been told recently by someone who creates websites and writes professionally that Google no longer looks at keywords as it used to, but it's rather content that moves a site up the Google ladder. Thanks for taking the time to help everyone here, much appreciated.

Hi LadyFiddler, yes I love Hubpages, I also like earning from it, but my friends and community are much more important to me. I do write for Bubblews, but its not the same really, and yes I really only write there for the money, but I have read lots of hubbers posts there too so its getting quite good, but give up on hubs? never! lol!

That's so true Nell i haven't came across any site as good as hubpages when it comes to writing and presentation . I write to express my emotions etc so i don't care to make money much, not saying that i won't. I've met too many lovely people here we are like a Family "the writers" . So where am i going ? I heard about bubblew i even joined but never went back ;(

Take care :)

Heidi Thorne from Chicago Area on December 10, 2013:

For those readers who are not yet aware, early this fall Google launched a game changing update to their algorithm called "Hummingbird." It is a massive technological feat since it evaluates for "context" (semantic search). While keywords are still important, it is looking for how those words are being used as well. This update is still in the early stages. So it is likely that traffic on many, many websites in the world will experience traffic fluctuations. It is not a problem exclusive to HP.

So, please, dear hubbers, if you're stressing about Google, redirect your energies into writing or updating your quality hubs. This Hummingbird update was designed to, eventually, weed out the junk content that litters the web. And this will take time.

Here's more reading on the update: http://searchengineland.com/google-hummingbird-172...

Honestly, I've been having pretty good traffic on some of my hubs lately. It also mirrors the traffic volume on one of my more popular blogs. So hang in there everyone!

Thanks informationshelte.

informationshelte on December 10, 2013:

Article length is an important factor to rank in the eyes of Google and other search engines, provided of course that the actual content is something worth reading.

The optimum length of a specific article depends greatly on the subject. Articles containing as low as 300-400 words (not to say less in some cases) can do astonishingly well in terms of incoming organic traffic, compared to mega-posts that are completely irrelevant to anything and can be classified as typical cases of writing complete fluff.

With more and more information uploaded daily on the World Wide Web, it doesn’t come as a surprise the fact that it becomes increasingly difficult to find virgin and poorly researched fields where you can offer your expertise to a global audience and get rewarded by Google with top position in relevant search results.

I think key to that is freshness of content and how you handle it.

Thanks Vincent, I totally agree with you. the idea of easy money with Bubblews is so tempting, I am there for that reason too. I won't jump ship from here though I love it too much. I like many other creative writers never joined Hub Pages intending to get rich or for that matter make a dime, nor cared too. Meeting fellow writers and poets was my aim when I joined back in 2009 when we had plenty of talented writers sharing and communicating with one another. They were storytellers, poets, authors. Most of them have left, a few like myself leave a few pieces of their work here to share, as well I come in to visit and leave comments on certain writers works.

Although I find most of the articles How to do this? copy and paste type of work, it does not amuse me. People are simply flooding this site with How Too's! In order for this site to get back to its roots, it needs the creative writers and poets back. The mix has to return to Hub Pages or it will decay and it's beginning to show that right now. Your hub proved that. Yes, many are flooding the airwaves over at Bubblews for a quick financial fix and when writers like Habee can claim to have received $500 in just a short period of time it draws even more there.

Of course people will say they earn more at Bublews than at the Hubs and they would be correct, but for how long? Until they are going somewhere else chasing the dollar. I fully understand the need for money in these very turbulent financial times, especially in the USA. However if the Hubs and members who remain here want to see more traffic, then they HAVE TO GET BACK THE QUALITY MIX OF WRITERS they have lost in hoards. By doing this, the traffic will increase. I'm just saying, in this humble poets opinion. Thank you for producing this very informative and much needed hub dear Nell.

Hi Nell,

This is a well done and well thought out hub. Ahhh, the fickleness of the internet. I view it like a pendulum. I am hopeful things will swing back our way again. It is frustrating and seems unfair, but I have always been loyal to Hub Pages. I thank you for giving so much thought and investigation into what is going on.

Hello Nell!

My hubs have lost a lot of traffic, which isn't a huge deal to me since I just like being able to write when I have the time. That being said, my most popular hub on how to make Hot Totties, DOES show up on the first page of a google search. This has always been the case for this particular hub, which is why I think it will always be my most successful hub. I've done several other recipes, trying to feed off the success of that one, but nothing has had the same level of success.

Ahh well, such is life. I'm working on several new pieces now so maybe, just maybe, one of these will jump that google hurdle! :)

Very interesting Nell. I believe HubPages is the best of its kind out there and it's a shame so many quality writers on here are losing traffic. I never got much in the first place, so I haven't been hit as hard as others. I joined Bubblews, but I just don't feel there's the same level of quality (to say the least) or camaraderie, and I've never been able to really get enthused about it. I hope HubPages holds on. I wonder if the staff is concerned enough or has manpower enough to really address this topic? Voting up and sharing.

The natural rhythm of things would indicate that as the internet grows in age, so will the number of articles on it. As this dilution occurs, and more sites come online just like hubpages, we will see less and less traffic and become less and less significant.

Nell, I agree with you that those short choppy sites seem to pop up all too often. With the question being, is that what people really want? Not me! I want to read an in depth article with information and some helpful images - just what we do here at HP.

So many people are looking up info on those little small screen devices. So a large article may be too much. But I figure that if I like longer, magazine type articles, others will too. There is hope!

Nell, well done my friend. My website has tanked and I've seen the same results. Your spot on with your investigation. I truly believe we may be better writing for our own domain. I use to rank for keywords, had over 150 first page rankings, and now they are all gone. If I'm lucky, I get a second page ranking. We see a lot of changes at Hubpages and not all of them are better. If it's not broken, why fix it? I liked the page format of years ago, about a 1 1/2 ago to be actual. It sucks, what can I say. Well done though Nell, voted up, useful, awesome, interesting, and shared.

Interesting, Nell Rose.

I don't really pay too much attention to the traffic. I do check it periodically but this is not my source of income (which is a good thing because I would not have a roof over my head if it were). I write mainly because I love to write and like you, I have grown fond of so many people here on HubPages and look forward to reading their writings and learning new things.

Your article is filled with much food for thought, Nell. thank you for sharing. Angels are on the way to you this morning. ps

Barbara Badder from USA on August 13, 2013:

Take a scroll down your page to the comment section. First you see a Google ad and then related searches, and then a long list of Related Hubs. On the sidebar are still another group of Related Searches. This is just when you are finished with the hub. There are so many more ads at the top and bottom of the page. None of this can sit well with Google.

It is almost overwhelming for the reader. There is nothing we can do. Hubpages has remove some of this junk off our pages.

I've been doing a little writing at Bubblews too. Do you have the same user name over there? I'll connect with you.

Nell Rose (author) from England on August 13, 2013:

Great article, helpful to us writers and should be to HP if they will listen. Lol

I agree with you about the length of text. Quite often the same thing (explanation or whatever) will be repeated two or three times through an article, I'm sure a lot of this is done just to stretch out the word count but I find it tedius to read.

You have done a lot of research into this and it is appreciated. Thank you

Nell Rose (author) from England on August 11, 2013:

I think your detective work is probably right on. I do freelance writing for some extra cash, and I have started submiting some magazine articles also. I still love the people on Hubpages and it would seem some changes could be made to pick up our traffic. Awesome hub!

Thanks nicomp, you have some great points there. And we poor minions will never ever understand their thinking. I suppose the thing to do is just keep writing because we love it, and hopefully one of these days Google will appreciate us! lol!

You must listen very critically to anything Matt Cutts says in a video. He's the ultimate politician. Almost everything that comes out of his mouth is prefaced with "usually" or "mostly" or "generally."

Google is not going to reveal their strategy to publishers: all they have is their secrecy. Without their deep dark unpublished algorithms they are just another Bing.

Wikipedia is a great example. Pick a popular keyword and Google it: the number one result is nauseatingly predictable. Why is that? Wikipedia is a pirate site with more copyright violations than any torrent. The writing is inconsistent and often biased. Yet somehow the site pops up all too frequently at the top of Google search results. Ask Matt to 'splain that.

Thanks Anne, yes thank you, I hope its all cleared up now, fed up of feeling horrible this week! have a great weekend, nell

Hi Deb, thats great news! just goes to show that if we center on something near to us in location then it definitely has value, be over in a sec to read, I love your Boomer Lake hubs, so I can see why.

Deb Hirt from Stillwater, OK on August 09, 2013:

I have to agree with the shorter hubs, too. After all, we were told how short our attenti0on span was. When I read something, though, I read from start to finish, as many will attest to, right down to spelling errors. Try this: original material that nobody has up. Life at Boomer Lake is going through the roof with views. I know that a good part of it is the pictures, which is why I think the blog is out of sight.

Hi Nell.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge yet again.

Hope you are feeling much better now my friend. Take care :)

Hi travmaj, lol! thanks, I do know what you mean, yes we keep on plodding on on here, but I still think its worth it, thanks as always, nell

Hi mamatita, thanks for reading, nell

Sorry anne, not been well so stayed off here for a couple of days. The captions are easy to do and free! you can either use your own photos or go to public domain. When you found one you want to use, save it to your gallery, then go to roflbots site, and just follow the instructions, easy peasy! lol! thanks as always.

Thanks, awesome hub and I personally definitely appreciated this!

Anne from United Kingdom on August 08, 2013:

Hi Nell.

I just Google´d swollen ankles heat to see if my former page 1 number 1 hub on that topic came up and it didn´t since HP pulled it for unrelated products or links ( in my view nothing was unrelated at all but there you go) Even when I put the correct title of the hub in, it still didn´t appear and I see that it was all e.how, netdoctor, wikipedia and those type of sites which did appear, so you are most definitely on to something askew here.

I was right in my assumption that after being unpublished briefly that this top hub is now doing virtually nothing and I am lucky to get 30 views in total per day from everything I have published. Just when I thought I was at long last heading to a 3 monthly payment and hoping to make it a monthly occurrence my hopes have been dashed and its very discouraging. One can only continue flogging a dead horse for so long, and despite everyone´s efforts including yours to keep spirits up and encourage us all to keep writing and wait and see, I am less than inspired at this low point in my fledgling career I have to admit.

I daresay I will at some point get going again when I have more time for writing, but with one disappointment after yet another change from Google or HP there´s little wonder that so many of those I follow are no longer bothering to put finger to keyboard.

By the way Nell, as always a great hub and I do love your pictures and captions, they are always fantastic and really eye catching. Wish I could find half the sites you get them from, and want to ask do you actually pay for pics or are they all from freebie sites ?

Interesting. Good that you are doing this. I do not understand how it works. So thanks again.

travmaj from australia on August 07, 2013:

Hi Nell Rose - well done and I hope your hard work is heeded. I totally agree with Annie (Bac2basics) I'm getting nowhere fast. Admittedly, I've been away, and a little slack - but even so I can see the difference - in attitude also.

Anyway, I'll think it over and see what transpires - thinking of the old adage 'A change is as good as a rest.' Thank you for all your investigative efforts and theories and may things turn around.I guess I'll plod on for a while. Best wishes Nell Rose...

Kitty Fields from Summerland on August 07, 2013:

Nell - I have joined Bubblews...but now I am LOST...and I can't find your username anywhere. :( Help me, from one hubber friend to another!

Nell Rose (author) from England on August 07, 2013:

Hi Claudia, I am sorry to hear that, yes I do believe the tags really did help, maybe I am wrong but other sites do use them, thanks for reading, nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on August 07, 2013:

Hi kitty, mine is going back up slightly, I have got two payments from Bubblews, its great for short pieces, and doesn't take five minutes. the only thing is that to earn we have to read copious amounts of others stuff to make it fair and then they read ours which brings the clicks, so far so good, most of us are over there as we speak! lol! sometimes it goes down for long periods thats the only problem, thanks as always, nell
