HubPages: A Simple Beginners’ Introduction

Danson Wachira is a certified Trainer in Computer Science, Information Technology and related studies.

If you have already signed up with HubPages and you are very new, then you could be asking; “Ok, am here, where do I start?” Chances are that you have read one or two things about HubPages but the ones that stuck into your mind are “Publish” and “Earn”.

Well you didn’t get it wrong; HubPages is about publishing and making money but there is a whole lot about that. Let us go back to the question “Where do I start?

Beginners in Hub writing (including myself when I started for the very first time) have a tendency of just jumping into the sea and starting swimming without committing a moment to read and familiarize themselves with what is actually required. The results of this are different warnings about Hub rules violation; Substandard, Overly promotional, Duplicate etc. and it can even get worse.

In this Hub, I will explain four key areas of HubPages that are “a must read” for beginners before they can start writing their first Hub.

  • HubPages Privacy Policy

HubPages Privacy Policy is a section that contains information that will explain to you as a user how HubPages intend to collect information from you, how it will use it, disseminate and safeguard your information.

This is a must read section because as a beginner you will get to know what you are committing yourself to and the practices and activities that you consent to. Be patient and read all the way to the bottom part where you get to know the recent changes that have been made in the Privacy Policy.

  • Hubpages Terms of Use

This is a section that lets you read and understand the agreement between you and HubPages as a website and all the services provided by HubPages. By accepting HubPages Terms of Use you agree to adhere and keep following HubPages terms and conditions.

As a beginner it is recommended that you read the whole section carefully and understand these terms of use and particularly; Part 2: Definitions and Service Description, Part 3: Permitted Uses, Part 4: Restrictions and Prohibitions on Use and the last part about the recent changes made to the Terms of Use.

  • HubPages Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

HubPages FAQ is another section of Hubpages that a beginner can get insightful information about nearly every question regarding HubPages and writing Hubs.

Here you will get information about how Hubpages works, technical matters regarding writing Hubs, publishing rules and policies, different ways of money making and Hubpages, answers to different questions and much more.

  • HubPages Learning Center

A lot of Hubbers, including the more experienced ones, will tell you that they spend a lot of their time at the Learning Center. This is a library where you can get nearly all the reference information that you require pertaining Hub writing.

Before I wrote and published my first Hub, I spent about ten hours digging through articles at the Learning Center.

Every article in the Learning Center is as important as the others and it is difficult for me to say which one is important than the other but probably you can start on the following sub-sections;

  • Getting Started
  • An Introduction to HubPages
  • Your First Hub
  • The Hub Tool

But honestly speaking any article in the Learning Center is worthy reading especially for beginner Hubbers. Take note of the articles that you may need to refer in future. After you get used to the drill read several Hubs especially in areas of your interest.

Reading other Hubbers’ Hubs will give you a head start in writing your first Hub, for example you will be able to see the use of different Hub writing tools (Capsules) and where to place them in your Hub.

We can always start from somewhere...

We can always start from somewhere...

Then it’s time to write your first Hub, pay attention to Hub violation potentials, rules regarding Hub writings, Forums, Posting comments, Asking questions, writing fun mails etc.

As you continue writing you will realize that other Hubbers especially the more experienced ones will be of great help to you if you only follow the rules of engagement.

Read more and more articles from great Hubbers and learn different styles and tricks of the business. You can also contact HubPages regarding areas that you need further clarification.

Surely if you are willing you won’t go wrong, but don’t ever forget that Hubpages and Hub writing is about Originality, Quality content, Quantity, increasing traffic and much more.

Ok, there you go… pick your title, write your first Hub, let me know and I will surely read it and appreciate that you read this Hub. After all, we can only start from somewhere.

Very useful hub specially for beginners. I've been with HP for around 3 months now and I still consider myself a newbie and still learning. I wish I could sit down continuously like you but I have my full time job as well. But I do peep and hub whenever I have the chance. And you, Ten hours on "Learning Center", wow! That's impressive. You just motivated me to learn more. Perhaps, I should really make the time and catch up. See you around.

This is great for beginning hubbers. I know some people come here without the intention of making money and figure some of these elements you mention are not very important. But after over a year, I still find myself running to the forums and the learning center to figure things out and make things better.

Thanks VibrantViews, it is important we keep on reviewing these basics.

Good idea, helping others learn more. I'm trying to do that on some of my newer Hubs, too!

Danson Wachira (author) from Nairobi, Kenya on May 07, 2012:

Yes Eric, i hope every beginner start with these basics. Thanks.

Looks like you've covered the basics. I think your Simple Beginners Introduction, will help many who skipped over the essentials when they signed up, and now need to know where to go and why.
