My First 6 Months on HubPages

Aside from writing, Bill loves to travel, explore new places, and take lots of photos to document it all.

It’s been just about six months now since I took that plunge into the world of HubPages. I must say it’s been a great ride so far. Not only have I learned a great deal about this whole on-line writing world, but it has brought back some great memories of events and trips from days gone by as I compose Hubs and search for old photos.

I’ve also met some amazingly talented writers here who have been kind enough and patient enough to share their knowledge so that others can learn and prosper. One of the most amazing parts of this whole experience for me so far has been the fact that I can share and communicate with writers from all over the world. One day I’m taking a tour of a park in Ireland and the next day I’m discussing a marathon taking place in South Africa. How great is that?

Going Back to School

It’s amazing the amount of knowledge that you slowly gain by being a member of this community. Every day I learn something new and the sum total of all this knowledge is easily the equivalent of taking a course in on-line publishing. And the beauty of this is that it just goes on and on, there really is no end to the learning process. Every time I think I’m ahead of the game and know enough to be dangerous I read a new hub and learn something new.

What's the Rush - Write Quality Over Quantity

When I first signed on to HubPages, and pretty much during my first month or so, I was definitely in a rush to get as many Hubs published as possible. Today, I look back at some of those early Hubs and I think to myself, “What was I doing?” The difference in the quality of my Hubs from those first few weeks to now is amazing to me. So now I have started the task of going back and bringing these older Hubs up to par.

I have definitely settled into a “look” for my Hubs that I am comfortable with and seems to be working for me. I have gotten away from the mega picture slide show look to my hubs with dozens of photos. While I love incorporating pictures into my Hubs I started thinking of that saying, "too much of a good thing". Now I try to pick the best photos and place them appropriately within the Hub.

Learn to Share

I’ve learned quite a few things over the past six months about sharing and promoting our work. I am now able to insert backlinks into my Hubs with ease and can certainly see the benefit to this. I am now posting my Hubs to Pinterest, FB, Twitter, Google+, Stumbleupon, and just recently to Delicious. While some of these seem to generate traffic, others don’t, so I think I need to re-evaluate the benefit of this and maybe pick and choose where I am posting to. I have tried to become more active on these sites so that I'm not considered spam and I continue to make some progress with this.

I am also now very conscious of sharing other Hubs that I find interesting and useful. I would want others to do this for me so I have made it a point to comment and share other Hubs that I find interesting as often as I can.

Now on to the statistics. After my second month here on HubPages I set some goals. I thought I would be making good progress if after six months I managed to get 50 Hubs published to go along with 12,000 views. I also thought that I could possibly reach the $50 payout threshold by the end of my sixth month. I am pleased to report that I managed to meet each of these goals. At the time that I set these I thought they would be a challenge but I seem to have failed to realize the addiction that HubPages has over me.

6 Months to my First Payout

I must say that I shared the same excitement over reaching the payout threshold as I did back on February 14th when I earned my first two cents. It’s certainly not because $50 is a large sum of money, it’s more to do with the fact that I can see the progress here and I know the ultimate potential of HubPages.

The thing that strikes me from the table above is that even though the number of Hubs that I'm publishing has gone down for the last five months my earnings have slowly increased. How great is that? I knew when I started this that it would be tough to publish a lot of Hubs over the summer months due to travel, family events, yard work, etc. I hope to reverse the trend over the winter when things calm down a little. I have a long list of Hubs that I want to write and publish so I will have plenty of material when my schedule permits.

From Humble Beginnings!

From humble beginnings

What does the Future Hold?

I most likely won’t publish another status until I get to my one year anniversary. I have no idea where I’ll be with this come next February so I’m not going to set any targets or goals other than to say that I hope to still be as active and excited over HubPages as I am now. I am still looking at this as a possible retirement supplement down the road and if it works out hopefully in five to ten years I can be earning enough to consider this a steady income stream. Maybe HubPages can be my vacation fund in retirement? To say that this could change my entire outlook on retirement is an understatement. I really think this has the potential to be another leg to retirement to go along with the other more mainstream income sources such as social security, pension, 401K, etc. I'll give it my best effort but I guess only time will tell. Either way, I hope to continue to be an active member of this community as it's great fun and I look forward to reading and hearing from all of the wonderful people that make this enjoyable.

As far as any advice I can give to anyone just starting out here I really think there are other Hubbers much more qualified for that than myself. The best advice and the only advice that I can give anyone considering taking the plunge into HubPages is that is takes patience, persistence, and of course hard work. If you can manage these three things then I think you have the recipe to be successful on HubPages.

My first month has come and gone and I have to say that this Hubpages thing is very addicting. It is also a lot of fun and even though I've only been here one month I can see the potential of HubPages.

Hi KS, welcome to Hubpages. I’m coming up on my six year anniversary soon here at HubPages. My, how the time has flown by.

K S Lane from Melbourne, Australia on December 28, 2017:

As a new rubber, it was interesting to see how much you've progressed in only six months! Thanks for sharing.

Janda Raker from Amarillo, Texas on June 10, 2017:

Okay, Bill, thanks. I just found Billybuc's Mailbag Hubs and will check them out. One of the best things about HubPages is the help that Hubbers give to others! Love it! (Of course, I DO need to stop READING so much and start WRITING more! LOL)

Bill De Giulio (author) from Massachusetts on June 10, 2017:

It's in HubPages. Just search for Billybuc in HubPages and from his profile page you will see all of his Mailbag Hubs. He publishes a new edition every Monday. He has been doing this for almost three years now. It's very helpful and he gives honest answers to questions he receives every week.

Janda Raker from Amarillo, Texas on June 09, 2017:

Wow, Bill, I don't even know about Mailbag by Billybuc. How do I find it? I have enjoyed many of his posts, but is Mailbag in HubPages or somewhere else? I'd like to check that out.

Bill De Giulio (author) from Massachusetts on June 07, 2017:

Hi Janda. Check the weekly Mailbag published by Billybuc. He addressed your questions in this weeks edition. Very interesting.

Janda Raker from Amarillo, Texas on June 07, 2017:

Bill, do keep us posted as to what you discover about blogging and linking to HubPages. Some of this is a bit complicated. Hopefully someone on this thread will have experience and be able to help with first-hand info.

Bill De Giulio (author) from Massachusetts on May 31, 2017:

I wish I had answers for you. I am not proficient in the world of blogging so I have some homework to do before I jump in. I do know that they can be monitized but exactly how one does that I'm not sure. I can propose the question to Billybuc (Bill Holland) who I'm pretty sure will have the answers. Ideally I envisioned having a travel blog but not duplicating my HP's content there. I would write short articles that would lead into my HP articles with a link to take readers to say Wanderwisdom where they could read the entire article. To be honest I'm not sure if this concept would work so I will do my homework before blindly jumping in.

Janda Raker from Amarillo, Texas on May 31, 2017:

Thanks for your input. That's probably a good move, to start a travel blog. Though I'm not totally sure how a blog differs from what we're doing on HubPages. Can you shed light on that? Also how would you monetize that? Would you be competing with yourself?

Bill De Giulio (author) from Massachusetts on May 31, 2017:

Absolutely it's do-able. I am toying with the idea of starting a travel blog to use as a launching point. I probably should have done it years ago. If you have the time to do it all why not?

Janda Raker from Amarillo, Texas on May 30, 2017:

Thanks, Bill, that's just what I wanted to know. Like you, I'd like to supplement my retirement income with what I can earn on Hubpages. Besides writing these travel articles on Hubpages, I'm writing some travel essays and submitting them to contests and anthologies. I'd like to continue to do both, using my website for a "landing space" for my "fans." Do you think all that's do-able?

Bill De Giulio (author) from Massachusetts on May 30, 2017:

Hi Janda. After over five years here I still check in daily and yes, I am still enthusiastic. I don't write as often as I once did but with a couple of trips planned for later this year I will certainly pick it up again. As far as an HP being a good investment of my time probably not as much as I had hoped. Things have progressed to the point where I make the payout every month but if I figured out how much I have made and how many hours I have spent writing then it's not so good. But, I have learned a lot in my five years here and there is no way to quantify that. I do love having a venue to chronicle my travels and I do look forward to continuing with this. If my views/earnings continue to improve over the next five years then I may indeed reach the point where HP will be a nice, little supplement to retirement income, and that is what I hoped for when I started. My advice, keep writing, you never know when one of your hubs will catch on and take off.

Janda Raker from Amarillo, Texas on May 30, 2017:

Bill, I had not realized how long you had been a hubber until I ran across this Hub, posted when you'd been on for 6 months. So now I'm curious--how has your progress been? Are you still enthusiastic or even addicted to Hubpages? Has writing for this site been a good investment in your time? Has it accomplished what you were hoping for? I'm working on a couple of hubs right now, but life keeps interfering. So I'd love some encouragement from you and your followers, if it's available!

Bill De Giulio (author) from Massachusetts on December 09, 2014:

Thank you Dwight. This hub sure seems like a long time ago. I am coming up on 3 years here soon and still Hubbing away. I really think I'll be doing this for the foreseeable future. I won't get rich but it's great fun and a great community.

Dwight Phoenix from Jamaica on December 09, 2014:

Wow it's interesting.........but i think in my first month here, this is the best hub I've ever read.

Maybe it's because it's just what i wanted to hear.

Linda Bryen from United Kingdom on November 10, 2014:

Hi! bdeguilio, you are an inspiration to other hubbers. You have lots of useful, awesome and interesting articles especially the travel ones. I love reading your hubs because I learn a lot from you and thanks.

I joined hubpages after being a stay home mom as to find some income. But i could not write a single article till 2 weeks back. for during this 2 week i wrote 5 hubs and i am also sort of addicted and i was feeling bad about over doing it. Looking forward to succeed in hub pages.

Hi Tirralan. Thanks for stopping by. Just a heads up, they just did away with the RSS feed a few months ago. It's too bad as I was just getting the hang of it. Now you have to use the link capsule and place the links manually. Oh well. Thank you for the read, have a great weekend.

Hi Kas. Thank You and welcome to HubPages. I'm still plugging away and optimistic that I'll be here for years to come. It's a great community and the financial rewards will come in time. You're off to a great start, keep it going. Many thanks for the visit, comment, vote, share, etc...

Hi Jools99. Over the last 6 months my traffic has been up, and then very down, but heading back up now. Hang in there, it seems that we are at the mercy of Google. You are correct, we can find pretty much anything right here on HP's, why Google?

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on February 25, 2013:

Very interesting read Bill. My traffic is in the crapper at the moment so I am feeling like not bothering lately to be honest but I just love writing and I've discovered that if I want to find something out, I don't bother Googling it any more; I just look of HP, it's usually here :o)

Hi Zsuzsi. Thanks for stopping by. You are off to a great start here so keep it going. It does take time but it really is a great community. I believe that they are doing away with the RSS feed feature soon so don't stress about that. Have a great day.

I first started using Hubpages as a back linking tool for a website, then one day I wrote an automotive hub, I knew a problem people were having with their cars, and it was a global automotive problem. I found the same experience as you, I was communicating with people all over the world, and I found that more rewarding then making money or driving traffic to my site, not to mention the community here on Hubpages is awesome and very supportive. Now I make more money here on Hubpages than on my website :)

Happy Hubbing Bill, and keep up the great work.
