Vikram Brahma is a Digitalpreneur, Author, Blogger, Writer, & YouTuber. He loves to write content & spend time working from home.
Do you want to become a content writer? Do you know that if you know how to write well then you can start your journey as a content writer?
When I started my journey as a digital entrepreneur, I started my own blog related to North-East India. During that time, I thought I would hire a few content writers and get regular content from them.
Later, I realized that if you know your subject well and love writing then with a little effort you can write your own content. After all, this is one high demanding skill.
Content writing is not a difficult task, it only needs some practice, patience, and your ability to put your thoughts into words. In this article, I will share some ideas as to how you can become a content writer. If you are ready to do the hard work then it can really benefit you. So, let’s begin.
Difference Between Content Writer And Copywriter
Have you ever heard these terms? Well, actually there is a thin line between them. Basically, anyone who writes and produces long articles, blog posts, content for long videos, podcasts, Facebook, Instagram posts, etc. they are known as content writers.
Whereas you will find copywriters mostly working in an advertising agency. They are specialized in writing short content. Since I have worked in various advertising agencies for 8 years I know very well about them.
In other words, they are experts in expressing the USP of products/services in the minimum word possible. If you have heard famous taglines of brands like - Just Do It or I’m Lovin’ It, or Think Different or The Ultimate Driving Machine, etc. are written by different copywriters of advertising agencies.
Basically, their jobs are the same - write to inform, educate, entertain, and convert leads into paying customers.
Step 1 - Learn To Write Original Content
If you want to become a content writer then, first of all, you should remember it is not a one-day game. It is a long process. Although I say, anyone who can think and write can definitely become a content writer but you need some discipline and practice.
Since many of us are not native English speakers therefore we need to develop this skill. And the best part is just like any other skill this is a learnable skill.
The most important part of content writing is you should build the ability to write original content. Nobody wants and expects duplicate content from any content writers.
Nowadays, there are various tools available online through which anyone can check whether the content is original or copied. To write original content, first, do some research, understand the subject well, let all information sink inside your brain, then come up with your original content. Since, I read a lot, have a lot of life experience, and love this art so I can write a lot.
There are only two ways to write original content, which I have explained above. If you live and breathe that domain and if you are an expert in that field then with a little effort you can produce original content.
Step 2 - Importance Of Creating A Portfolio
Before you go out on social media and promote yourself as a content writer and pitch someone you need to have some portfolio to show your clients.
First, you need to build some credibility about your claims. Many new content writers think they can just go out and approach anyone and get the desired work.
So, my question is how many articles can you show to your prospects? Have you written any articles which you can share with others as proof? What are the main categories for which you are interested to write? Do you know how much you can charge? Can you make out whether the prospect is genuine or not?
Writing content and making it a profession are different things. You have to learn to manage both of them. So, now let’s understand how we can build an online portfolio to attract future prospects and clients.
Step 3 - How To Build A Portfolio?
Now before you want to become a content writer you should select some particular niche regarding which you are more comfortable writing. For example, if you have no idea about how to invest in the stock market then you will not be able to express your thoughts in the best way possible. You may have to do a lot of research unless you are an experienced content writer.
Whereas if you have a high interest in traveling and have some experience in that category then there is a better chance for you to write. Selecting your niche is as important as selecting your career.
There are some categories that are high in demand like technology, fashion, lifestyle, traveling, and digital marketing. Now, first of all, write at least ten articles for each category. This will boost your confidence and help you to build your portfolio. But as I said, stick to your interest or develop a passion for that category. Make sure articles are free from errors. You can use apps like Grammarly to check your grammar part.
My interest is in writing articles related to motivation, entrepreneurship & self-help, and digital marketing. And I have already written more than a hundred featured articles.
Now, to build your writing portfolio you can either build your own blog or use self-publishing forums like Hubpages and Medium. And publish all your articles one by one. If you start your blog you might have to invest at least Rs. 4000 (in India), whereas publishing in forums will have zero costs. Yes, you can start just by investing your time and effort. Both platforms have their own pros and cons.
Step 4 - How To Get Work As A Content Writer?
Rather than thinking about how to get a job as a content writer, I would say you should think about “how I can build my online empire just by writing content that I love”. Well, related to this topic I will write soon. Although I am in the beginning stage, still, I will share my entire process with you soon.
Now, if your intention is to get work/jobs related to writing then you can follow some of the methods given below. Remember you have to use multiple techniques and try to reach more prospects. To build your credibility as a content writer you just need to have a few initial good clients.
Method No. 1 - Increase Your Social Media Connection & Presence
Since you are ready to work online, therefore, you have to increase your social media connections and reach. Join some content writing groups, reach out to other bloggers, online marketers, etc.
The first thumb rule, become more active online, share what you do and how you do it. People come on social media for the following things
a) To share information about their life
b) To know what is going on around the world and in the life of others
c) To get entertained
d) To search for jobs
e) Hire others for their work
f) To do business online
So, start sharing your talents, your work, and share links to your articles. If someone will have an interest they will read and approach you.
I got my first initial clients from this approach only. I get a lot of calls from others and they want to know what I do online. Till now, I have received at least 25+ calls and messages even from old colleagues and strangers.
Good platforms are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and of course LinkedIn. Currently, I charge 0.80 paise for word per count for writing articles. But, I also work for selective clients as per my choice.
Method No. 2 - Create Profile In Freelancing Sites
Many people build their online portfolios in many freelancing sites like Upwork, Freelancer, Fiverr, Peopleperhour, etc. To be honest I have also started my career by working on Upwork.com.
Once I got my first initial payment then I realized it is possible to earn money online by working from home. Although now I don’t use this approach anymore. But, I will still recommend others to at least try and there are huge opportunities out there.
Maybe in the future, I can try again but now I write and build my online writing empire in a different way. And I am most excited about this.
Method No. 3 - Approach Your Personal Connections
The third method which you can use is by approaching your old colleagues and seniors. And it looks easy to start with.
But whether you will get work or not will depend upon what kind of repo you have built during the old days. I also got a few clients through this approach and I am still working for them.
Method No. 4 - Keep Writing For Own Blogs And Forums
The last method which I can truly suggest is to keep writing for your blogs and forums. I really want to tell you that you can make money by monetizing your blogs and forum content. Although, I am a bit slow in the process.
For example, if you will write continuously for the forum like Hubpages and Medium then after a particular number of views you start getting payments. Of course, it takes time to reach a particular amount. But it entirely depends upon your hard work and smart work.
It is a little bit of a hard journey but I believe if you really love writing and want to build a few multiple sources of income then keep writing and keeping sharing your thoughts, ideas, and stories.
I hope this in-depth article has given you some ray of hope if you really want to become a content writer. Becoming a content writer is easy but becoming a quality content writer is a little bit hard but with lots of practice and willingness to learn anyone can do it. Remember to have some patience and do a lot of practice writing original content on a regular basis.
