How My Hub Went from Zero to 3,000 Page Views in Just Under Eight Hours

The author has been writing for HubPages since 2008 and likes to thank his fellow Hubbers by showing him how to make more money.

I was going to wait until my data had become more meaningful before writing this hub. But I’m so excited about what happened that I had to tell someone.

My hub entitled Highest Paid Engineer Jobs in the USA had been a poor performer with only 500 page views in six months. The daily page views had been languishing near zero in the previous days.

On a tip from polyglot, a fellow Hub writer whom I followed a few days ago, I signed on to Reddit. This is a free website that calls itself “the front page of the Internet.” It essentially allows members to post links to articles according to topic, which are known as subreddits. You can click Submit a Link on the front page, or search for a subreddit and submit the link there.

I chose the latter option by searching for and landing on the engineering subreddit. Clicking Submit a Link displays a page that prompts you to put the title of your link, the url. The Choose a Subreddit field was already automatically field with engineering. I then clicked Submit and the link to my article was posted onto the site.

About two hours later, I checked my Hubpages statistics page, just because of my innate compulsive habits. I couldn’t believe the one-day total had already jumped to about 700. In three hours, it reached 1,200 views, and by four hours views had passed 2,000. The numbers just kept climbing, so that by eight hours later, when I wrote this hub, the total was over 3,000. UPDATE: The numbers topped out at just over 4,700 about 24 hours after posting and started back down. UPDATE 2: At 48 hours after posting, numbers are at 256 and continuing downward. But even this is still much higher than the average 20 or so a day I get on most hubs.

My research indicates that postings on Reddit experience a surge within a day or so, and then taper off. I just don’t know when or how that will happen. If you’re interested in these numbers, perhaps to use Reddit for your own efforts, give me a Follow. I’ll post any update information in Comments, so you’ll automatic receive email notification.

You’re certainly welcome to try Reddit on your own. But first read Increase Website Traffic by Posting Links on Reddit - Part I for all the variables involved. And then read Lessons of Repentance: Avoiding a Ban from Reddit. You’ll then be better prepared to use Reddit to its fullest capacity.

In the meantime, thank you for listening to my story. It’s probably been the most exciting eight hours I’ve experienced at HubPages.

This is amazing. Are you still getting such successes with Reddit?

Robert Sacchi on June 16, 2020:

Thank you for sharing about your success and Reddit. I see you have over a million hits. Great going. Is Reddit continuing this level of success for you?

Abby Slutsky from America on June 08, 2020:

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Just starting the hubpages process.

Anita Hasch from Port Elizabeth on June 15, 2019:

Congratulations so happy for you.

Wish we all had that luck. I tried Reddit once with my smart phone. I think I did something wrong, will try again. Thanks for sharing.,

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on June 12, 2019:

Thanks for your insight, Wesman Todd Shaw.

Wesman Todd Shaw from Kaufman, Texas on June 12, 2019:

I think I lost TWO accounts doing that over the years. The second time they busted me a lot quicker than the first time.

Hey James, I was completely removed from Facebook. No explanation given, and I can't make another account there using my name, or my face.

I tried with another name. The minute I uploaded a photo of me, their facial recognition software suspended my account.

Guess I could do one with a fake name and an some sort of cartoon avatar.

Anyway, that's why I'm now again on Reddit. I guess I'm addicted to social networks, even though Reddit isn't exactly that, but it is all I've got at present. I'm not allowed on Twitter either. Heh.

One could probably link to their own stuff in comments on Reddit. I'm not sure if they'd tolerate that or not. As a matter of fact, I was just about to link to you last night where a guy was saying something about a genocide of Native Americans by 'white people.'

I get kicked out of Reddit groups about as fast as I join them. The infamous 'r/The_Donald' group is probably the the only one I couldn't get kicked from.

There's a world politics group with over TWENTY MILLION members. It's run by left wing extremists though.

If you wanted to try it, you could probably get away with some promotion of your own stuff in appropriate threads in the r/The-Donald group. You'd get readers, but you'd get fewer impressions per page views than ever before. It's an extremely tech savvy sort of website.

James A Watkins from Chicago on June 12, 2019:

Thank you Wesman Todd Shaw. I am enlightened now by you and I appreciate it.

Wesman Todd Shaw from Kaufman, Texas on June 11, 2019:

No, do not do this. I have done this, and I'm here to tell you not to do it. You'll lose your Reddit account. Oh your account will be there, but the people on Reddit will actually tell you you will be SHADOW BANNED, and they damned sure mean it.

Reddit is a very good website. You do NOT want to lose your account there. It is a valuable place to use and enjoy, but you can't promote yourself there.

AND pretty much everyone on Reddit is using ad blockers, so not only will you be shadow banned, and this is a very real thing - you won't make much of anything from it, as Reddit is a very tech savvy establishment.

James A Watkins from Chicago on June 11, 2019:

Wow. Thanks for telling us about this. Congratulations on your success. I am going to try it.

Gupi on June 09, 2019:

Anita Hasch from Port Elizabeth on June 08, 2017:

Hi Alocsin,

So glad I found this hub. It is just the info that I have been searching for. Will be checking out Susana S. She is obvious doing something right. I have managed to sell at Amazon last year and that's it. I want to sell at Amazon on a regular basis, hopefully I will now be able to learn from the best. Will also look into Reddit. Thanks for a really super and informative hub.

Great story! I once managed to get about 600 views in 1 day from Reddit, but I haven't got that many views in a day since. I average at about 10-20 views a day. Any more tips? I tend to post in a variety of different sub reddits.

Donna Hilbrandt from Upstate New York on June 30, 2012:

I just saw a FB post by a friend that mentioned Reddit. I am a bit behind, as I have never heard of that site. Coming across the idea twice in one day is a sign to get there and check it out. I will certainly read your other pieces about it to see if it can up my page views, which are a bit abysmal at the moment. Oh well, some days will be better than others. :)

Sarah Carlsley from Minnesota on June 18, 2012:

Nice tips here!! Very clever :) Congrats on getting so many page views!

Thanks for stopping by, jessicaseo.

jessicaseo from INDIA on April 30, 2012:

Thanks for the hub as I can figure out the research and time you have spent in getting this much info. Reddit of course is a great social site to get wider recognition and visits towards a page. However, as a whole I feel that social sites and other top sites where one could wide its page reach are just a platform which of course is very useful but what could get views and clicks is the title or header that you have posted. A post must be catchy to make users click on it, like your post when I saw zero to 3K page visitors I instantly clicked as to what it is.

Walter Holokai from Youngstown, Ohio on April 25, 2012:

New friends thanks for all your great comments. I can't believe so many people liked it.

Great hub. Great advice on reditt. It is a great site to get traffic but they ban you easily with no warning.

Thanks Anne. I do try to approach things logically and dig for as many facts as possible.

Anne Burlinson from Australia on March 20, 2012:

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on March 06, 2012:

It may also be coincidental, billybuc. I normally only get a couple of hundred extra hits per hub on Reddit. But careful targeting is needed.

Be sure to read all my three other hubs on Reddit, ExoticHippieQueen, especially the one about avoiding a ban.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 26, 2012:

I agree Madurai. I think it's quite hit or miss with them, although I generally show an increase in traffic.

ExoticHippieQueen on February 26, 2012:

Amazing! I wish just once I could see that happen to me on a hub. Poetry is just not that popular, unfortunately. I see that the few "how to" hubs that I did always stay high in the ratings compared to the many poems that just usually hang around, though some have done very well. I am going to try Reddit. Thanks!

Madurai from Online on February 26, 2012:

Alocsin, you have posted here your surprise experience fro reddit about surging of traffic. I think that was a rare case, coincide with some unknown factor. I am regularly sharing with reedit, there was not much traffic from there. Anyhow, thanks for sharing this info.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 20, 2012:

Thanks Capedium but be sure and read all the parts of my hubs about posting on reddit, including how to avoid the ban. Also, not all submissions will get this many views. But if you're able to submit successfully, you'll see a noticeable increase in visitors.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 20, 2012:

It can be very picky. Try waiting a day or two before submitting again.

Ov Overo from Oklahoma on February 19, 2012:

This is just too good to be true.. This is more than amazing.. I HAVE GOT TO GET TO WORK..

JR Krishna from India on February 19, 2012:

Reddit is a wonderful site which gives these experiences. But of late whenever I try to submit it says"You've submitted too many links recently. Please try again in an hour."

May be I am doing something wrong.
