Make Money Online with HubPages: How Much Money Can You Make?

I'm an experienced online content creator with several streams of passive income from my writing. I'm here to share my secrets.

How Much Money Can You Make as an Online Writer on HubPages?

People who write on HubPages do so for a variety of reasons. Some have information they want to share or a cause they want to promote, some have an opinion about movies or music, and some write poetry and fiction. No matter your motivation, it's generally assumed that you would like to get paid, at least a little, for your writing. HubPages is a great site for a lot of reasons, and getting paid is one of them.

There is, of course, a meaningful difference between getting paid and getting paid, and this article will discuss HubPages writers' money-making possibilities on both ends of the spectrum. Some writers on HubPages make a few cents here and there, while some pull in tens of thousands of dollars a year. What's the difference? More importantly, what should the average writer expect in terms of making money writing for HubPages and the HubPages Network?

Many writers get frustrated because they don't understand why they're not seeing big money after publishing their first few articles.

Earning Money on HubPages from Page Views

There are two ways to make money writing for HubPages: traffic and Amazon sales. This article will discuss money from traffic -- people reading your articles.

Of the two basic ways you can earn money on Hubpages, the most common and automatic method is money paid to you based on the number of visitors to your articles. Unfortunately, most writers have an inflated view of the amount they're going to make from traffic. They assume that they will automatically get traffic, and that will translate into a nice amount of money that HubPages will send to them.

This is almost never the case, and many writers get frustrated because they don't understand why they're not seeing big money after publishing their first few articles.

One of the main stumbling blocks to understanding is that there is no single answer to the question, "how much money will I make on HubPages from X number of views? Thanks to a little thing called CPM, the answer to this question is highly variable.

Heavy traffic -- bad for your work day, awesome for making money on HubPages

Your Traffic, Your Money, and the CPM

CPM stands for "Cost Per Thousand." This is confusing right off the bat, and it's where a lot of people just stop. But the "M" is based on the Latin for "thousand," so even though it means a thousand, it says "M." Are you with me so far? Good.

CPM means, more or less, the amount that you will make from 1,000 visitors to your articles. There's a bit more to it than that, because the number is determined by how much advertisers are willing to pay to have their ads appear on articles that are about your topic. For example, articles about electronics are very popular and result in a lot of sales; for this reason, CPMs for these keywords (topics) are typically pretty high. On the other end, the CPM for creative writing and so on are typically very low, because people reading those articles don't typically rush out and buy things.

Right away you can see that what your article is about will determine the amount of money you make per thousand views. So let's say your article is about cologne for older men. Cool. The CPM is somewhere around $5 per thousand views, because people do buy cologne after they read about it.

So now you're going to make $5 for every thousand views, right? Not quite. There's a slight catch.

HubPages Takes a Share of Your CPM Money

Yep -- even if you do manage to get 1000 people to read your article, you're not going to get all $5.00. HubPages is not operating a charity–they're offering you a clean, easy-to-use writing platform, free editing services, and good-to-great placement in search engine results. In return you're giving them a share of your money. This is what is meant by "revenue sharing." If you say "no, nope, no way," then that's fine with HubPages. You're free to go write on your own blog or website. But unless you are an experienced web designer and content creator with perfect English skills and a talent for SEO, you will be facing an uphill climb.

The upshot: making money as an online writer is hard. HubPages makes it easier, but it's going to cost you a bit, typically about 1/3 of the raw income.

The HubPages Income Question

Well, as we see, how much a writer makes on HubPages is a combination of your topic, the CPM for that topic, the raw traffic that your articles get, and the percent taken out by HubPages. Here is a screen shot of one of my HubPages accounts, and the money I made over several days:

An Example of My Revenue Sharing Income

Notice the impressions, the CPM amount, and the daily amount that I made.

It's important to note that "Impressions" is a fancy way of saying "people who saw your article." It's the number that advertisers are paying for. The numbers here are about 2/3 of my actual traffic, because HubPages has already taken out their share of the views before they even calculate my money from my shares. I actually had well over 3,000 impressions per day.

My Money: Where it Comes From

As you can see, I make a nice little amount of passive income writing for HubPages. It adds up to several hundred dollars a month, and several thousand a year. So how did I get here? How long does it take, and how many articles do you need to write to make a little money on HubPages?

Your Money: Where it Will Come From

If you're a new writer just starting out, get ready -- it takes a while to make as much as I do. Between all of my HubPages accounts, I have well over 200 articles that I have been polishing for over 5 years. I started out with almost no traffic and no money, and I kept at it until I now make money whether I decide to write that day or not. I have gone many weeks at a time without even logging into HubPages, and all that time I was making money. Passive income is the best!

When you start, you will make almost nothing. Get ready for this. Your traffic will be in the tens and maybe the hundreds at best, and you will see between zero and a few cents a day. You have to get to $50 to "make payout" and get paid by HubPages, so you're in it for the long haul. The site is not for people who will write a half-dozen articles and then get bored and wander away -- it's for determined entrepreneurs who see the benefit of a long-term commitment.

You may not make big money right away. but get started now and it will happen a lot sooner!

So How Much Money Can You Make Writing for HubPages?

The answer: it depends on you. Your income from writing for HubPages depends entirely on your determination, your patience, and your talent. You will make very little at first, but if you take the long view, the sky is literally the limit.

About Me

I am a seasoned online content writer with over 15 years in the business. I make decent money from this side-hustle: last year I made about $20,000 from my combined libraries of online articles, and all of that income was passive (I made money 24 hours a day, whether I was writing or not). It's a sweet source of income that I use for travel and other luxuries.

When I first started writing online, it was really more for my own entertainment than anything else. I chose topics at random, ignored SEO, and thought I could do everything myself. As a result I made more or less every mistake a rookie online writer can make. But I learned from my mistakes, and I got better.

These articles are my way of sharing what I've learned with other online content creators. They are free for you to read and act on, if you choose. If there's anything I have left out or got wrong, feel free to comment down below. Good luck to you, and I hope you see your income streams become rushing rapids!
