The most discussed topics on the Hubpages forum is about ways to improve traffic and getting more money for hubs. In the past, there has been so many discussions and questions about reaching a payout and improving hub traffic. This all depends on following:

Does it work with creative stuff like poems? Most of good hub about poetry never rank high is Google search results.

In both above cases I have taken keywords that are repeated most in the hub and put them in the title. I have deliberately used a Pipe (|) not colon (:) as a separator. A pipe separator tells a search engine that both parts are equally important.

This is the second call for action required by HP team. Think about describing your hub in a SMS. That’s right! Because search engines including Google allots just two lines under your title in Arial font size 14px which is roughly 155 characters. HP allows you to write a title up to 200 characters, but I would keep it between 115 - 160 characters.

Why? Mobile devices display only 115 characters of the title so it pays to optimize your content for mobile users also. I do not have concrete data, but an educated guess is that over 50% of hub readers are using mobile or tablet to read your hub.

Meta description is what an SEO professional call our HubPages summary. Search engine like Google uses HubPages summary that you write, whereas Bing or Yahoo will use snippets from your hub to create a summary based on query of a user. Think of the hub summary as your elevator sales pitch so make it count.

Normally more time your reader spends on the hub is better. Most of the web pages in the world get under a minute of the visitor's time. You need to increase it to at least three minutes. This brings us to our next problem. How my reader will spend more time on my hub?

SEO professionals like lawyers and bankers invented technical terms like session length and page view duration to confuse us. Believer it or not, Hubpage, again has provided enough arsenal to keep your readers captive to your hub.

Here is what you should do (apart from 2500 words of word play)

  • Put a video or two (at least 60 seconds). Recipes, DIY instructions, TV clips of related items, YouTube even the one taken on the iPhone will do. People prefer watching over reading. Let them watch two minutes of the YouTube video on your hub.
  • A picture is worth a thousand words. Use plenty of them. They can be viewed as a slide show so provide at least 15 to 20 high quality preferably original pictures augment your hub. If you are using a picture that you do not own, use proper attributes to acknowledge the owner of the original work.
  • Use at least one table and a map capsule. Even if you do not need it but does google robot care? Feed him his fix. She visits 2.3 pages in 3 minutes using a mobile device. Her household is likely to be less than $50000 per year. Her interests are beauty & fitness, home & garden, crafts, books and cooking. No wonder recipe and relationship hubs do well here!

Using Google Webmaster tools to improve your traffic

Google webmaster tools gives out a wealth of information to manage, control and improve websites or a Hubpage. I would strongly suggest that any serious Hubber or blogger must register with Google webmaster's in order to take advantage of the tools that they offer.

1. Index your web page or Hub faster. Although sites like HubPages are crawled many times a day so there is no need to actually ask Google to crawl and index your hub or web page in their search results. If you do not want to wait even for few hours, I suggest that you use fetch as Google tool to get your article indexed faster.

2 Finding long tail key words: Once your hub has been online for some time, Google starts collecting data for long tail key words. Over the period of time Google collects information about long tail search terms and compiles them neatly as explained in the next picture.

How Google Analytics Can Improve Your Web Traffic?

Google analytics is free. It is a very powerful tool that allows you to:

  • Get real time data on location, traffic source and hub visited by a reader.
  • Audience date such as age, gender, interest, location and language of your readers
  • New Vs Returning readers, their engagement level
  • The type of computer or mobile device used, which browser they use
  • User flow which means which hub they read first and what they did after that
  • It also tells how many people came via organic search and how many came via social media
  • In social media, it gives a breakdown of traffic from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, G+, Pintrest and others
  • It also tells about average time spend in reading a hub and bounce rate

Armed with these data, one can plan what to write and how to keep readers engaged for a longer duration.

Using Social Media To Drive Traffic To Your Website

I have seen that people talk about promoting their hubs on social media platforms and getting very positive results. Some Hubber wrote about getting 10K views in a day from a viral Facebook promotion. While social media has its own advantage and certainly helps your hubs, I believe it is over rated.

  • Only 10% or less traffic is generated by social media
  • It takes too much time to build and maintain an effective social media campaign. The time spend there can be used for writing new hubs which would probably bring more traffic.

If you think social media can boost your traffic, try by all means. I try to limit my time on social media. Every day posting a few articles (not mine, but relevant to my reader) on Twitter, LinkedIn and other takes about 30 minutes. I try not to overdo it and post my hubs once in a while.

The search engines do take social signals as a ranking factor. A Hub or a web page having many Facebook likes and G+ improves trust in the eyes of the user as well search engine, but it can not be the main traffic source in most cases.

Hubpages community, on the other hand, is a great social platform that can generate a lot of internal traffic for you. This could be done by doing following things

  1. Keeping your HubScore and Hubber score high
  2. Asking and answering questions
  3. Getting enough followers to comment on your hubs
  4. Participate in forum discussions

A Word of Caution

This guide is based on my personal experience on the Hubpages and with the websites I manage. In addition to this I have relied on:

  1. HubPages learning center
  2. Google analytics
  3. Google Webmaster tools
  4. Quantcast and other web search metrics providers
  5. YouTube videos from Google

These have worked well for me, but there may be other ways to improve traffic. Increasing traffic and SEO is a long term exercise and results can be seen after months of consistent hard work.

@bestonlineschool I see that you have just joined HP 3 weeks back. It takes time to see an increase in the traffic. I would say keep writing useful and engaging hubs and you will see traffic rise eventually.

To answer your question: The title of your hub is H1 tag and heading of your text module is H2. You do not have to add it by yourself. The HubPages offers an extremely SEO friendly CMS to add content. All you have to do is to create quality hubs with your keywords in URL, title and hub summary.

There is no need to do artificial backlinking as it will hurt your ranking. When you comment you get a backlink from that page.

HubPages has extremely SEO friendly design so all you have to do is to write quality content. I see that some of your recipes hubs need a better summary. Please ensure that your keywords are in the summary of the hub. Also use Pipe in place of the colon as a separator because this tells the search engine that phrases on either side are equally important.
