How to Drive Traffic to Your Articles

Build your HubPages traffic with these tips and ideas.

Build your HubPages traffic with these tips and ideas.

Variety In Writing: New Contests and Challenges

By participating in HubPages contests and challenges, I have increased Hub views, made new friends, stimulated an ongoing interest in writing, and increased earnings.

Each of the two times I participated in sunforged's 60 Day Challenges (60DC, 60DC2) for writing and promoting with the group, my earnings increased 30%. Participation in other group projects on HubPages and using promotion techniques learned in the 60DC and 60DC2, along with affiliates and ads, I was able to maintain steady earnings.

With the advent of every new feature, I participate as fully as I am able to do.

Hub Questions

Hubber darrinintheden asked me the question concering how to draw traffic to a Hub. I thought immediately of a few methods that have brought success.

NUMBER ONE

One method of attracting traffic is to participate in HubPages activities such as asking questions as arrintheden has done and providing productive answers as many Hubbers do.

Answers can take the form of either short answers or full Hubs and either can bring curiosity from readers that may want to know the writer's stances on other topics or to be entertained or informed by their other Hubs.

NUMBER TWO

Paul Edmondson provides an example of a highly effective traffic-building strategy with his answer to them same question at this link. This is a strategy that has been successful in a number of portfoilios of related Hubs that I have written and connected. Jason Menayan first alerted me to this technique when I was a new Hubber and it has worked well. As Paul reminds us, content in these portfolios must be high quality, especially in originality. A portfolio of poor content will not draw traffic, but it might produce complaints.

A few of the portfolios that have succeeded for me include:

Traffic comes form different places!

Traffic comes form different places!

NUMBER THREE

A third example of traffic building is to link to other Hubbers' articles and to encourage them to link to yours. As an example for this article, you can see links in the paragraph above. Don't forget to place URL Trackers within your links to others' pages -- the link here is to an excellent Hub on the subject by HubPages' first Hubber, jimmythejock.

When you link back and forth between others' Hubs, youc an benefit from social networking sites that others use as well as well as your own contacts in this realm. Others to whom you link may encourage others to read your work, or once outside readers access these writers' articles, they will find some of you own links as well. And it's fun! Social networking can be an effective method of gaining traffic for your Hubs.

HubPages Challenges are not quite this tough.

HubPages Challenges are not quite this tough.

Join a Hub Challenge

Several ways of increasing Hub traffic present themselves right here in the HubPages Community. Here are a few of them -

Hot Topics

A HubPages staffer posts blog articles about Hot Topics that should draw good amounts of traffic each month.

For example, for April, May, and June of 2014 the topics are:

  • Health - Allergies
  • Home - Gardening, home improvement, and others.
  • Fashion and Beauty
  • Gender and Relationships
  • Sports - Baseball is the National Pastime, but other sports are just as popular.
  • Travel - Summer vacations and more.
  • Holidays
  • Entertainment

See the full HP Blog post for all the opportunities. The blog is a useful source of timely information.

Are you allergic to owls? That might make an interesting topic for a Hub.

Topic: Travel

Have you ever been to the coastline of Cinqueterre in Italy? That trip would make an engaging Hub!

30 Hubs in 30 Days - Increase Number of High Quality Hubs and IncreaseTrraffic

The 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge can significantly increase traffic to your Hubs. For those that have not previously produces 30 high-quality Hubs per month, the increase in number places the Hubber's Internet presence into wider and more frequent view.

It's a little like the difference between seeing only 1 billboard for a product along a stretch of highway, and seeing 30 billboards from the same company along the that route. The better quality your Hubs are for this challenge, the better will be the traffic results and income earned by your Hubs.

Anyone that is a member of HubPages can join this particular challenge and it has its own HubPages Forum at 30 Hubs in 30 Days HubChallengers.

HubPages Contests

HubPages sponsors writing contests in which HP writers can earn awards and cash prizes.

For example, during the first week of March one year, the usual Hot Topics inspirations added a feature and connected with the Helpful Health Hubs Contest. This was double impetus to join the mass of people writing about the topics.

That event was not only another opportunity to write about a particular topic, but to do so on a changing daily basis for the month for daily end weekly cash prizesa

During March 2014, a HubPages Contest of the same sort was called The Grow the HubPot Challenge. The prize pot to win grew with each featured Hub on the HP site by week.

Some of the contests are not valid in all countries globally, but remember jimmythejock? He is the HubPages site's very first Hubber (writer) back in 2006. When he, in Scotland, is not eligible for a particular contest, he produces Hubs for it anyway.

Jimmy benefits from his consistent participation and enjoys the increased traffic to his Hubs. He also enjoys the writing experience and interaction with Hubbers and other readers.

Summary

Paul Edmondson's advice for writing high-quality content is correct and, from personal witness, I know that the portfolio technique he suggests works effectively to increase Hub traffic.

In my experience, community participation in HubPages activities has also been effective in increasing Hub traffic, gaining friends, and providing opportunities for giving and receiving support in tough times. Many of us could use more of those things.

This all has included Questions and Answers, Hot Topics, contests such as the Helpful Health Hubs Contest, the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge, and the Rising Stars program. I also volunteered for the HubNuggets Team (Rising Stars, now).

Currently, I enjoy posting in interesting threads on the HP Forums, reading others' Hubs and, and leaving encouraging and constructive comments.

Social networking can increase Hub traffic as well, if done properly and not overused to the point of SPAM.

My most successful methods for driving traffic and increasing earnings are:

  1. High Quality and useful, timely content and
  2. Participation in the HubPages Community.

Best wishes for your writing success!

Patty Inglish MS (author) from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on December 03, 2012:

Hi wtaylorjr2001 - I see short stories on HP, but the writers often say fiction does not receive much traffic nor substantial income through the affiliate programs like AdSense, HP Ads, Amazon, or eBay. If the stories are already published elsewhere online they would be marked"Dupicaten Content" by HP, so hopefully that is not the case. You might visit the 30 Hubs In 30 Days Challenge threads in the Forums and ask what those writers think of the idea of the short stories and go from there. Best of luck!

William H Taylor from Binghamton NY on December 03, 2012:

Thank you for this. Do you think it would be acceptable to do a 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge with the topic being a series of short stories in a common world. A portfolio of short stories. I've created one and after reading your post I think I'd like to try it. But it seems these are for non fiction topics. I don't know if I should try it with Circles Seven.

Hi Patty, what a useful hub!

I was curious to see what the "portfolio" strategy was all about, and I was surprised when I discovered that I'm already doing it haha!

On my CarNoobZ niche account I just did a series of car insurance hubs and titled them as a series, but with different subtitles...e.g. "Car Insurance For Noobz: What Is [blank]?"...like that, and linked them together. What can I say? It works!

And I love how you put an HP signup link right in your hub. Doing that just seems so obvious...now that I've seen you do it =)

When I first saw how many followers and hubs you have, I was like, "Oh well, no need to follow...she probably retired from hubbing and everything is old", but then I saw your hub activity. You're still here?! Thanks for sticking around and continuing to contribute to the HP community.

So, I'm looking forward to browsing through your other hubs and seeing what else I can learn from you.

Aloha!

MikeNV from Henderson, NV on October 19, 2011:

These are all excellent suggestions to drive traffic. All seem to play on a variation of community participation. One thing I like is the new emails that display your articles to your existing followers. I actually think this makes it a lot easier to keep up with the community interests. Generally I don't like being bombarded with email, but in this instance it seems to be working. So Hubbers would be well advised to follow the people who write content they are most interested in... and not be afraid to join in. I tend to read more hubs of the people I am following because I can trust their content.

Bruce Peterson from Lompoc on October 17, 2011:
