★ Memorable Packaging Ideas For Your Creative Handmade Business ★

Add Wow Factor & Branding To Your Products

If you own a small online business, particularly if you specialize in crafts, luxury items or handmade goods, it's important to make your customers feel special by adding extra creativity to your packaging - And you will find plenty of photos and links on this page for ideas and inspiration.

Packaging can be practical as well as memorable, and if a customer is impressed they are more likely to return to your shop. This makes packaging an extremely important marketing tool; one which is often unfortunately overlooked as most people strive to keep packaging as cheap and as minimal as possible. In this Internet age, where more and more products are bought online, the way items are presented in the shipped parcels is more important than ever to stand out amongst the masses.

I hope you find the suggestions and ideas below inspiring :)

An Introduction

Branding & Why Packaging Is Important

Branding is very important when establishing your shop, and packaging is very important in reinforcing your brand to the customer. Your logo and shop name should be repeated and prominent, and a business card included in the package lets the customer keep a momento so that they may refer to it in the future.

It is vital that the packaging matches the contents; the more high-end the product you are selling, the more important that the packaging reflects the quality. Black and sleek is a good choice to show luxury. For eco-friendly products, natural colored recycled packaging is best. Stay consistent.

If you are really creative and unique in your packaging and go the extra mile, it may pay off more than you think, as so many people blog and share their purchases online nowadays that stand-out packaging is likely to make it onto the internet somewhere - i.e. free advertising! Freebies and unusual materials are ways of surprising your customers.

As a small business owner, you have the chance to stamp your personality onto your packaging. Larger companies may have lots of money to spend but they can't add a personal touch to the products they send out so this is where small businesses can take the advantage.

Ideas for ways to impress customers are: using a handmade style with a personal touch to make it look as far from mass manufactured and personality-less as possible, use all recycled materials, use surprising parcel shapes (e.g. a pyramid, a pizza box, a Chinese takeaway container or a box in the shape of the product inside), use unusual materials, use striking colour combinations, clever and practical packaging (e.g. a food box that opens up into a serving bowl), or packaging that tells the story of the business.

I hope some of the ideas below are helpful to you.

'Oddica' T-Shirt Packages

The t-shirt company 'Oddica' was a perfect example of over-delivering on packaging (in a good way!) The graphic designed crisp packet style packaging contained the t-shirts as well as a load of awesome free buttons/stickers/postcards. People are so impressed with the packaging that they photograph it and post it/blog about it online - which is an extremely valuable slice of free advertising!

This is my favourite example of packaging which really elevates the product (which was really cool anyway) into something exclusive-looking. Check out more gorgeous Tie Lab packaging here.

Sewing Pattern Paper

Clever idea for using sewing pattern tissue paper, which adds interest has has a vintage, rustic feel to it. I also love the fact that the colour of the wool hearts on the outside mirrors what is inside the parcel - and they're generous freebies too!
