PAINTING ABSTRACTS FOR PLEASURE AND PROFIT!
Below I present some exciting ideas for producing and selling abstract paintings.
No Art School education required!
This article offers plentiful tips, tricks and "outside the box" ideas on how to paint abstract paintings, and hopefully SELL them to make some money from your artistic talents.
You will need to learn some of the methods and techniques employed by successful artists and develop your own unique style if you want success in the field of abstract art, but if you have a talent for abstracts, there's no reason why you cannot sell your paintings, - once you master the basics. Trust me, I've painted and sold a number of abstracts, and have had no training or education in this type of art. It's not difficult, once you understand the basics.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A HIGH-BROW OR ACADEMIC LECTURE ABOUT THE ART OF ABSTRACT PAINTING, BUT RATHER, I PROPOSE THAT IF YOU HAVE SOME REASONABLE TALENT FOR ART AND ENJOY ABSTRACTS, YOU MAY WANT TO CREATE SOME ABSTRACT OR SEMI-ABSTRACT PAINTINGS, - AND MAKE SOME MONEY IN THE PROCESS.
THE GENERAL PUBLIC CAN RARELY TELL A PROFESSIONAL ABSTRACT PAINTING FROM A REASONABLY COMPETENT ONE.... THE MAIN CLUE IS USUALLY THE PRICE TAG!
MODERN ART.... IS IT A SWINDLE? Contempary and modern art can be baffling to get your head around. It ranges from sharks immersed in formaldehyde, to unmade beds and countless other extremes of human imagination. I respect all artists that can command gigantic sums from mega-rich art collectors and become world famous. However, for now we should probably aim a little lower!
If, like me, you lack the talent to create an unmade bed or
stuff a shark, then perhaps we must stick to painting!
5 Good Reasons to paint and Sell Abstract or Semi-Abstract ART....
Don't let yourself be put off by intellectual elitism, - and all the many bewildering names and descriptions associated with modern art in all its forms. This can be very inhibiting.
IN RECENT TIMES THERE HAS BEEN A MOVE AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL TONAL PAINTINGS WITH A LIMITED COLOUR RANGE, TOWARDS THE BOLDER, MORE CREATIVE AND COLORFUL SEMI ABSTRACT COMPOSITIONS. THOUGH IT MIGHT BE TRUE THAT PURE ABSTRACT PAINTINGS HAVE A MORE LIMITED MARKET.
Abstract paintings, in the main, are not really for thinking about too seriously, but are usually employed for a bit of sophisticated-looking art to brigten up a home or office etc, - or for gazing at whilst contemplating the world. Many modern homes and offices prefer modern abstract art, and are willing to pay good money to own it.
Compared to the disciplines of conventional art, (which can take a lifetime to master), you may be set free by abstracts, or semi-abstracts, where you can paint anything how you like, for your own amusement! If others like it as well, then you may well get some sales.
- Fun to produce. (Less to stress about)
- Easy to produce. (with a little practice)
- Quick to produce.
- There's a STRONG market for good abstracts.
- Abstracts often command higher prices than standard paintings.
Selling Your Abstract Paintings: The Market.
KEEP THIS UNDER YOUR HAT...
ABSTRACT PAINTINGS, = ABSTRACT PRICES!!
WITH NONE OF THE USUAL YARDSTICKS TO MEASURE A
GOOD PAINTING FROM A BAD ONE, YOU HAVE
LICENCE TO ASK ANY SUM THAT TAKES YOUR FANCY!
Seriously, this is not far from the truth. People expect to pay good money for good art, and understand it's not cheap. If it is cheap, they assume it can't be very good, - irrespective of what their eyes tell them. Tell them the artist who painted it is a renowned award-winning artist, and they suddenly see how great it is!
Some time ago I was at a general auction sale and up came the porter holding a large unframed abstract painting. It was described as dating from the 1970s and by an unknown artist. It was ok but nothing outstanding. To my surprise it got plenty of bids and made several hundred pounds here in the UK,- which was probably around $600 US. This impressed on me the fact that a good sized abstract painting can have considerable market value, even when the piece is not by anyone of significance. This is known in the trade as a "furnishing picture" which simply means a painting ideal to furnish a home or apartment. (A modern one in this case)
More recently I stumbled upon a fascinating TV program featuring a small London shop that were selling modern trendy furnishings, (not a gallery) and the owner was desperate to acquire ANY reasonable ABSTRACT ART he could get his hands on. "I need some modern abstract art" he exclaimed, and was frantically hunting for some reasonable modern art to fill his walls. Why? Because having such art will enhance his shop, improve the "modern" ambience, and also be a source of extra income of course. (Note, this shop owner was not trying to hunt down art by established professionals, - that would have been very expensive, and he wasn't an art dealer. He just understood how some reasonable modern abstracts would decorate his shop and potentially earn him some mone)..
The program then went onto show a few young artist's making quick abstracts to supply such "trendy" outlets. This points up the fact that many such stores have plenty of WALL SPACE to sell art, and turn "dead" wall space into regular income. YOU can capitalize on this hidden market. Ditto other premises, such as up market cafe's.
There is a strong market for abstract paintings, but they need to be good. On top of this, they usually can command high prices. Why? Because many of those that buy abstract art are LOADED, City bankers and those with modern apartments in high flying occupations are often looking for stunning abstracts for their homes and offices. Corperate buildings are also often decked with abstract paintings.
I recently noticed a number of large abstract paintings over at TRUMP TOWER, No I wasn't there hanging out with Donald Trump,, but watching Celebrity Apprentice. This however shows what I mean by certain groups and lifestyles that want a WOW! factor or a big impressive piece of art that says "SUCCESS". Many in the general public buy into this type of art too. It's a vast market.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO EARN MONEY PAINTING ABSTRACTS?
How difficult can it be? Conventional painting techniques in watercolor takes YEARS to master... Likewise oils.
Painting landscapes or seascapes etc to an exacting standard in oils is decidedly difficult to master. Abstracts relieve you of this mighty burden, and you can abandon the need to depict reality as we know it! You choose how much reality to include, or none at all! Your paintings don't even have to look like anything recognisable.
Is there a healthy market for good abstracts? Yes, abstracts sell very well, and I explain more about the huge market for abstract and modern paintings below.
What is an abstract? The word abstract covers a wide MULTITUDE of styles, techniques and subjects, - and has many definitions, but basically it means... Do anything you want!!! In other words, it implies no requirement to depict actual reality. Anything goes. But that does not mean anything you paint can be considered good art. (or saleable). A sound knowledge of art is a great help. There are certainly some techniques and golden rules of painting to learn if you want to produce exciting abstacts. (and avoid an absolute mess! - Or something impossible to live with!)
Ideas for abstract paintings: Perhaps the easiest way to get ideas for your abstract paintings is to base your concept on a real scene -or still-life, figure, etc - you find interesting or beautiful, then play with the various SHAPES of interest, and simplify what you see to form a strong abstract drawing that captures the essence of the scene. Then your idea can start taking shape as you add color and bring the idea to life. You can choose between abstract, or semi-abstract depending on the subject, or your own personal preference.
What makes people buy art? I believe people commonly buy pictures that have a "feel good" factor. (On emotion) Thus pleasant memories triggered are.a spur to buy. An abstract might do that sub-consciously on another level. Also, using certain colours is a crafty way to promote certain emotions.
Generally speaking, abstracts are usually big, bold and trendy, so they fit in well with modern style and taste. The abstract painter has a golden opportunity to capitalize on the current trend for open design and minimalist living, - and abstract paintings tend to look great in such a home.

FURTHER IDEAS FOR SELLING ABSTRACT PAINTINGS
Choose your venues wisely. Take a good look at the general style and ambience of any venue, and determine if modern style art and abstract paintings are likely to sit well with the potential outlet in question. A gallery selling traditional paintings will probably not be enthusiastic for abstracts. On the other hand, if there are some modern art pictures, then they might be receptive.
If you have yet to make a name for yourself, and have no track record, then you may need to look to the bottom end of the art market to get a foothold. However, try for a higher level if you have confidence in your work. They can only say no. You have to start somewhere.
List of possible outlets: These outlet and others are covered in detail within my lens: "Top 10 Best Ways to Sell Your Art and Earn Money From Painting" which is featured at the bottom of this lens.
Places to possibly sell your art...
ONLINE ART GALLERY
UP MARKET CAFE
YOUR OWN WESITE
HAIR DRESSING SOLON
As you can see, you may need to think outside the box a little, but there are plenty of crafty avenues for selling your art... with a bit of enterprise. And some owners of business premises may well be happy to earn extra by selling your art on a commission basis.
Promote yourself and your art:
In the modern world there is no excuse for not promoting yourself and your art. Never in history has there been so many ways to promote yourself, - at very little cost, - and for an artist to get known by literally thousands across the globe.
Social Network sites, such as TWITTER AND FACEBOOK are obviously good starting points. Squidoo and your own blog or website are perfect for showing off your latest creations. Twitter and facebook can help to ensure you generate good traffic to your website or blog.
AS AN UNKNOWN ARTIST, YOUR WORK MAY GET LITTLE ATTENTION AND FEW SALES. ON THE OTHER HAND, WELL-KNOWN ARTISTS GET SALES EASILY, AND COMMAND GOOD PRICES. THE TRICK IS TO GET YOURSELF KNOWN. THIS REQUIRES A LOT OF SELF PROMOTION AND CRAFTY TACTICS TO ENSURE YOU GET THE ATTENTION VITAL TO YOUR SUCCESS.
To really put yourself on the map QUICKLY, you probably should get some professional help on the subject, a.s.a.p.
Realistic Abstracts: Painting Abstracts Based on What You See
This concept is known as semi-abstract: Painting abstracts based on what you actually see, is one sure way to get yourself started, instead of waiting for a flash of inspiration to show itself - from nothing! . i.e. you have a starting point...and something to inspire you, and something for your imagination to play with. You feel you are on solid ground.
Second to this, I believe [most] people (buyers) prefer paintings that have something REAL to relate to, even if abstracted, so there is probably a bigger market for this type of work.
Finally, it is surely EASIER to create a good work of art based on something you can see and can connect with, than producing something from vague ideas. This is particularly true for beginners.
Failing that, just go weird!!

Semi-Abstract Painting (2 mins of Pure Inspiration!)
Relax, and Enjoy the Creative Process of Abstract Painting.... Where 'Nothing is Wrong'.
The joys of being an abstract artist:
Good abstracts can be highly saleable and there is far less concern for perfection than with traditional style painting. (There is no actual right or wrong way to paint something). However, like most other types of endeavour, there are techniques and methods and strategies for success, - (both art, and science) which once fully understood and mastered, can multiply your chances of being a successful abstract artist.
Even those working by pure instinct and spontineity will be unconsciously mining the deepest parts of their minds where lies a goldmine of stored images and knowledge from things observed in books and other souces of artistic inspiration.
It could be said that the success of an abstract painting is more to do with emotional response than anything else. This is normally achieved through use of line, form , shapes, color, texture etc, and viewer interaction does the rest..

Books on abstract painting
I find there's nothing like a good art book to get you fired up and motivated. It can be something to browse, or something to thoroughly absorb. Either way you get the OSMOSIS effect, meaning it sinks into the deepest levels of your brain, and impacts positively on your consciousness while deeply involved in the act of painting. Your creative "auto-pilot" take over, and somehting magical can often emerge
That's my excuse for having dozens of art books!.
