Is Article Marketing Right for You?
EzineArticles is an online article submission platform that has been around since 1999. There are several article submission directories, however, EzineArticles is among the best, as per Alexa Rankings, and ranks high in Google.
The basic concept behind these directories is that approved authors submit short (400 to 700 words), authentic, well-written, content-rich articles on specific topics. Authors are allowed to include a couple of links in each article they submit. They are then hosted (at no cost) on their high volume traffic websites.
EzineArticles has stringent editorial guidelines, which authors needs to adhere to, in order to have their content approved. Each submission is reviewed by their editorial staff and if it is not in compliance with their guidelines, it is rejected.
Article marketing has been around for many years and many online content writers have used EzineArticles.com to generate good traffic to their websites and blogs via the directories themselves as well as through search engines. In the past few years, though, these directories have come under fire with the Google algorithm changes. This affected many tops sites including EzineArticles.
On this web page, you will find relevant information to help you understand article writing, submission and the benefits of using this tool to direct web traffic to your website and/or blog. Article marketing is not for everyone, find out if it's right for you.

Top Article Submission Websites: Alexa Rankings 2010 to 2012
Alexa Internet is a subsidiary company of Amazon.com that collects and analyzes data on browsing behavior in order to come up with web traffic reporting. This reporting helps rank websites around the world. The above graph shows some of the Top Article Submission websites in comparison to EzineArticles.com. As you can see, EzineArticles.com is at the top and continues to maintain its top ranking.
As indicated earlier, all these directory sites were negatively impacted by the change in the Google algorithm. You will notice that when Google Panda was first released in early 2011, traffic on these content submission websites took a huge hit. EzineArticles implemented several positive changes to counter this negative effect and has since steadied in terms of Alexa rankings.
In the table above, you will find the Alexa Rankings (Global and USA) along with the Google Page Rank for these sites like Ezine Articles, Article Base, Suite 101, Helium, Go Articles, Article Dashboard, and Article City. You can compare the data before and after the Google algorithm changes. As you can see, EzineArticles has been able to maintain its Google Page Rank of 6.
I've experimented with them and submitted 25 articles, which were approved, since I joined in mid 2009. You can read more about my personal experience with them in the next section below.
Is EzineArticles Right for You?
My Personal Review on Ezine Articles
Article Marketing has worked for many authors who've used and continue to use EzineArticles, but it may not work for everyone. Some of the factors that will help you determine whether it is for you or not, are discussed below.
- Do you enjoy writing? It sure helps a great deal because writing content can be quite time-consuming. Of course, you can hire ghost writers and use their content, but it's not the same. Ultimately, you need to ensure that the content is good quality and is original. Also, you may need to write content on topics that are popular. Article marketing is a process and you will need to submit a huge volume of good-content in order to see effective results. You will need to ensure that your content includes targeted keywords to be able to reach your audience.
- Content submission is a manual process, though automation is possible, so you need to be aware of the time required to invest in writing and submitting your content. Do the pros outweigh the cons? This is something that you will have to decide for yourself.
- EzineArticles allows publishers of newsletters to use articles published on this platform with a credit link without any changes. However, this is sometimes misconstrued as permission to use this content on other websites and blogs. This has resulted in website and blog owners plagiarizing content.
My Personal Experience with EzineArticles
My plan to experiment with EzineArticles was mainly to test the platform for traffic to some of my Squidoo webpages. As I was writing detailed content for my Squidoo webpages, I found it fairly easy to take that content and rewrite a quick, short, good-quality and original content for submission.
Each content piece took me about 15 to 20 minutes to write and I included a link to my Squidoo webpage into the article submitted. This helped expand my reach and audience with content that I had already written, thereby directing more traffic to my Squidoo webpages via their traffic sites as well as some of my articles were picked up by publishers to be featured in newsletters.
I submitted 10 articles to EzineArticles during the initial process and received an upgrade to Basic PLUS Expert Author membership. During my time as a member, I submitted a total of 25 articles which were approved. Personally, I didn't tap into the full potential of the platform, but tested it for myself to warrant continuing using this platform.
I found that once submissions were approved, they were quickly indexed by Google and received traffic. However, post Google Panda implementation, it became more difficult and cumbersome to submit articles, especially those that included links to Squidoo webpages. This resulted in frustration and waste of time, so I decided not to continue using EzineArticles. Instead, I will be focusing on contributing my content to a content sites like Wizzley and my personal blogs where I can earn money from my published content.
This doesn't mean that the site may not work for you. If you host a website or blog and want to leverage from the traffic, this content marketing platform may work well for you. However, you still have to be cognizant of the points discussed above. If you think that EzineArticles will work for you, continue reading to learn more about it and how to effectively use this article submission platform.

What an informative lens, itâs so full of useful information, I learned everything I need to know about Ezine Article marketing. As with all your articles/lenses/work, it's very thorough and extremely well done! Thank you for sharing.
anonymous on December 28, 2012:
Great overview - I have used Ezine for years, as well as a few others. Ezine is fantastic for SEO. Even post panda, etc it gets me traffic. I became a Platinum author with featured articles, as well. I also post to my blog after ezine to keep the juice alive. After your niche has enough articles, take content, make slight revisions and audio record or put in ebook as gift to those who sign up for your site/newsletter/membership. You can also sell the content in an audio, ebook or DVD from your site. As long as it's your content you can repurpose it so that all the hard work at writing doesn't go to waste after initial SEO.
Anthony Godinho (author) from Ontario, Canada on September 15, 2012:
@anonymous: Hi Katee, publishers of newsletters are allowed to use relevant Ezine Articles in their newsletters so long as they abide by the Terms of Service (TOS). I'm not sure what the nature of your promotional newsletter is about. I would suggest visiting the EzineArticles website. You can find the Publisher TOS at the bottom-right section of the website.

@mouse1996 lm: When I initially created this lens more than a couple of years ago, I was testing to see how the EzineArticles platform will work for me in relation to my Squidoo lenses. I just updated this lens last week to take into account the Google algorithm changes, so you may want to re-read those sections to see if this is still a viable option for you.
Anthony Godinho (author) from Ontario, Canada on August 27, 2012:
@sudokunut: Yes, with the Google Panda changes, most article marketing sites got hit including EzineArticles. I've been wanting to update this lens since I last created it a couple of years ago which I managed to do earlier today. I think article marketing still works, however, it all depends how you use it. I mainly used EA to test it on my Squidoo lenses. You can check the update and my thoughts in the section above on my experience using EzineArticles.

@bhavesh lm: I agree, submitting articles to EzineArticles helps a great deal in creating good content. They have a rigorous approval process and sometimes it difficult to get articles approved the first time. For some it can be frustrating, but if you embrace it as a learning process, you will enjoy it and learn a lot in the process. All the best to you as you submit your articles to EzineArticles!
bhavesh lm on November 06, 2011:

@happynutritionist: Thanks for stopping by and for the squid angel blessing. EzineArticles have tightened their editorial guidelines since the Panda update and for some it may become frustrating having to resubmit articles to be approved. @johnlfa: Thanks for your feedback on your experience at EzineArticles. Great to know that you're a diamond author there. They have become much stricter with their approval process post Google Panda which is a good thing! :)

@cdcraftee: Hi Christine, great to see you here and thanks so much for your detailed feedback on your experience with EzineArticles. I agree with your with regards to their stringent approval guidelines. I like that too because it's made me a better writer, but like you said, it can be a challenge sometimes. I've seen both, my articles rejected at first attempt and also approved within hours.
You sure have built your credibility with them achieving the Diamond author status...well done! Even with the negative hit from the Google Panda changes, they are still a force to reckon with and a top article writing site. Ultimately, I see it helping the site overall and separating the wheat from the chaff. Thanks again for your detailed feedback...it's much appreciated and best wishes and continued success to you!
Christine Larsen from South Australia on June 10, 2011:
Hallo again Anthony,
Yes I took the plunge a year ago with Ezine, and seriously love the discipline and the high standard of writing demanded there...have just today had article no.51 'published'.
Sometimes it all just rolls...sometimes I shed the proverbial 'blood, sweat and tears'...and occasionally even totally rewrite a 'problem' article (with much angst and grrr-ing - and with angry staccato typing - really fast)...and usually turn out a ripper.
Have had approval of one of these within 10 minutes! This old bird almost fell off her perch!
But every moment has been worth it - my writing has improved in leaps and bounds, to the degree that I now have been given Diamond author status. It shines in my heart nearly as brightly as the diamond that has been on my finger for 47 years!
I am seriously having the time of my life - between Squidoo and Ezine and a couple of other efforts. (And I do link articles and lenses)
Well done for encouraging others to consider Ezine - they will never regret it if they are serious about honing their writing skills.

@CliveAnderson LM: Hi Clive, good to see you back here. I'm not sure about other lensmasters, but I do write articles in regards to my lenses. I find EzineArticles are great for SEO and if written well, they are great for exposure to newly built lenses. My assumption with regards to other lensmasters would be the same as above, so as to write good content and drive traffic to their Squidoo lenses. Hope this helps. Cheers, AJ :)
CliveAnderson LM on March 05, 2011:
Thank you for your kind words and I am only glad to be of any help...
One thing that has been puzzling me is that if you and other Lensmasters do not write articles in regard to your Lenses, then how do you make them so popular and drive visitors (traffic) to them?
Just a thought that flashed through my mind and thought who better to ask.
Anthony Godinho (author) from Ontario, Canada on February 19, 2011:
@CliveAnderson LM: Wow, you've got a lot of articles on EzineArticles. Good to see that it's working well for you. In 2011, I will definitely be submitting more articles and making use of this great resource. Thanks for the tip of submitting articles to other directories as well and for stopping by...it's much appreciated!
CliveAnderson LM on February 18, 2011:
I agree you are absolutely right about Article Marketing ajgodinho, it is a resource that should not be overlooked. I have been using articcle marketing now for over two years. On EzineArticles I have 675 articles which have produced 52,692 article views... The article that I write tomorrow could be the best article I have ever written, it may get hundreds of thousands of views in its lifetime, or even more, there is no way of knowing...
A top tip to turbo your articles and promotions is to also submit Exactly The Same Article to other directories, only two or three, but be sure to include a link back to your original article on EzineArticles. Other website and blog owners will be doing the same thing if your article is of interest to them and so this helps your article and its content grow online.
What this will do for your lenses is build a growing amount of backlinks and the more quality backlinks your lens has the better it will do.
Thank you for adding a great lens that is helpful and worthwhile...
Anthony Godinho (author) from Ontario, Canada on February 12, 2011:
