I've been writing online for 10+ years (7 years on Hubpages). I frequently write about online marketing, making money online & technology.
What is OnlyFans?
In a nutshell, OnlyFans is a site where anyone over the age of 18 can add content (pictures/videos/audio) they created and charge fans a monthly subscription to access the content.
In this sense it is not dissimilar to other major UGC (User Generated Content) sites such as YouTube. While there is the opportunity to generate revenue from uploaded content on YouTube though adverts placed on the site and before videos, the vast majority of content on YouTube is free to access.
OnlyFans is much more geared towards generating revenue for the content creators and the site, content creators can offer subscriptions ranging from $4.99 to $49.99 per month or offer free subscriptions..
The revenue structure on OnlyFans is quite generous with creators receiving 80% of the revenue generated through subscriptions, paid messages and tips.
While OnlyFans is probably not considered one of the 'major' social networks, it did receive an increase in attention after the singer Beyoncé referenced it in a song in May 2020, the site reportedly witnessed an 15% bump in traffic that day! However it is not believed that Beyoncé is a member of the site.
Isn't OnlyFans a site for adult (NSFW) content?
While it is true that a large proportion of OnlyFans content creators upload adult content and often work within adult industries (webcam performers, lap dancers, adult actors), OnlyFans is NOT solely a site for adult content, it is just that they are happy to accommodate adult content, when most other online social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram & YouTube are very strict on such content, primarily because these sites can be and are frequented by persons under the age of 18.
If you perform an internet search for OnlyFans you will discover that it is often associated with NSFW content in popular culture, memes and on other social media platforms. But there are thousands of content creators on OnlyFans who upload and charge a subscription for SFW (Safe For Work) content, from fitness instructors, artists, Instagram influencers, DJs and musicians to language teachers and circus performers!
I have just created an OnlyFans account where I plan on sharing high quality information and techniques on creating an online income.
How does OnlyFans protect minors from viewing NSFW content?
Because the vast majority of content on OnlyFans is only accessible via a paid subscription using a debit or credit card, most people under the age of 18 will simply not have access to these payment options. In fact there is an enormous amount of content unsuitable for people under the age of 18 widely available on the major social platforms like Facebook, and of course the internet in general, compared to OnlyFans.
How Do I Become a Content Creator & Earn Revenue on OnlyFans?
The process is actually very simple and you only need to fulfil a few criteria.
The most important is that you must be at least 18 years old, the site employs strict age and identity verification techniques and you should never attempt to circumvent them, they are there for your protection.
Although OnlyFans is a UK based company, it is accessible in many countries around the world, a full list can be found on the site.
- Now just head over to OnlyFans.com and create an account.
- In order to earn revenue from the site you will need to submit a photograph or scan of a piece of Government issued ID, such as a passport, driving licence or identity card and a 'selfie' of yourself holding the ID next to your face. Verification can take up to a few days, but is usually completed in a few hours.
- Next you will need to add a debit or credit card in order to receive payments from subscriptions, messages and tips. The minimum withdrawal amount is just $20 and takes 3-5 business day to process.
While you are waiting for your account to pass verification you can start creating content and promoting your OnlyFans profile which will be in the form of a link like www.onlyfans.com/YOUR USERNAME.
So choose this wisely and try to use a username which reflects the content you are planning on uploading to the site. You may also want to consider your privacy when creating a username, you can use your real/birth name, but you might want to use a pseudonym/stage name.
You Can Still Earn Revenue from OnlyFans Without Being a Content Creator
OnlyFans has a referral program where you can earn 5% of revenue generated by content creators you refer to the site for a period of one year, it used to be for the lifetime of the content creator you referred, but this was reduced in May 2020 due to the massive influx of users since the Coronavirus outbreak.
You just need to click on the drop down menu in the top right hand screen of your dashboard and click on 'Referrals' to get your referral link (see image below).
In order to earn referral revenue you must complete the same ID verification that content creators are required to.
OnlyFans Referral Program
So hopefully now you will have a better understanding of what the OnlyFans website is about, its functions, the potential revenue it can create for content creators.
You should also be aware now that if you know or meet someone who is an OnlyFans content creator, it does NOT automatically mean that they are producing NSFW content!
