What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Since the time I began creating content, I came across Affiliate Marketing from my peers and coaches. Affiliate Marketing helps you earn when you sleep. If that intrigues you, I must tell you; you are not alone. Even I was attracted to the proposition of earning while I sleep.

I then began doing my research, reading blogs, watching YouTube Videos, asking around, and in this blog, I will share what I have learnt so far.

Affiliate Marketing is where you promote or recommend your products to your followers and get paid a commission. The payment could be in terms of the number of sales, lead generated, or you may be paid in terms of clicks you generated.

The companies will generate a link dedicated to you, and when your followers use that link to make a purchase, you get a commission. You need to have a large following and a community of loyal followers to be able to scale up on your affiliate income.

This method is beneficial for both Companies and their affiliates. The companies will pay only when they get revenue; they will not have to invest in advertisements without any conversions. Some popular companies like Amazon, eBay, Rakuten have their Affiliate Programs.

Things to Keep in Mind While Doing Affiliate Marketing

So you are enticed to start your Affiliate Marketing program. Before jumping into it, I will have to ask you to stop and think a few things through. I don't want to sound pessimistic, but I need to warn you as I don't want my readers to harbour a false dream, make mistakes, and face disappointment. I made a few mistakes while doing Affiliate Marketing without giving it much thought, and I don't want you to do that.

Here are a few things you need to keep in mind:

1. You need to have a community of loyal followers.

How are you going to sell if you have very few people listening to you? Start building a community, build loyal followers and then pitch your links. My teacher once told me, 'People love to buy things, but they don't like being sold'. So you need to be very careful while doing Affiliate Marketing. Don't sound like a salesperson. People hate that.

2. Provide Value first.

Continuing from the first point, to build a community, you need first to provide people value. It can be educational content or entertaining. People will choose to follow you only when you give them some value. Decide on what is the thing that you can provide, what you are good at, and what people would like to consume. You can then blog about it, or create a video or share it on your website.

3. Sell relevant products.

You can sell physical or digital products, but whatever you sell has to be relevant to your niche. It has to be in line with the content you provide, and its presence should feel natural.

4. Sell the products you are well versed with

You are responsible for your words and action. Your community will believe you for your words. It then becomes your ethical duty to talk about the products you have used personally or are sure would benefit your customers. Don't advertise for the sale of money; you won't be in the game for the long term. Sell only the products you have received value from and would want your followers to receive value from.

5. Most importantly, be honest, be yourself.

Internet is filled with junk. Don't be just another litter. Instead of imitating, try giving a differentiated value to your community. Try having your elements there. While the things that you say will fetch your viewers, but it is your personal touch that will retain them. Be true to yourself, and be faithful to the art of content creation.
