I have been in a Network Marketing organisation for about 2 years. I think I have enough experience there to share about my stories.
Expand Your Network, Expand Your Net Worth…
Ever heard of this saying? This is one popular saying that is used typically in Network Marketing type careers to motivate the people to produce better results for their team and for their organisation.
Though there are some truths behind this statement, does it fully justify working in one full time? Is it worth your investment? Let’s find out more.
How Would I Describe Network Marketing?
Well, that’s one way to describe. If I were to describe it, it’ll be along these lines.
Network Marketing is a business model where your real income is dependent on how well you can recruit and motivate those under you to replicate your actions.
This is basically what you will be doing in order to ensure that you can progress up in the chain. Doesn’t sound that hard, does it?
Well, here’s the thing, it is really not challenging if you are fully committed into it.
Types Of Network Marketing Industries
As I’m a Singaporean, I can only list down those that are commonly available in Singapore.
- Multi Level Marketing
- Direct Sales
What Is It Like Being In A Network Marketing Company?
You can really see people make good money from it. When you see others earning good income and enjoying that dream lifestyle, you will feel more motivated to perform better.
Truth be told, it’s not all roses and peaches. There are plenty of bumps along the way that you will have to overcome.
For some, overcoming these challenges can be gruelling.
Factors Affecting Performance
Income is a rather tricky one. You see, depending on the type of Network Marketing companies you join, the income you can potentially earn will vary.
However, most work around the same concept. You sell your products to clients and whatever products they purchase from you, you get a commission.
Of course, commission depends on the company and product which you are selling. Seems straight forward, right?
Well, it really is straightforward and based on this information alone, it seems like an industry which almost anybody can excel in.
For us millennials, one of the most enticing aspect of joining a Network Marketing company is the lifestyle it promises.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s impossible to achieve such extravagant lifestyle through this, but only few can manage to achieve this.
Why do I say that? Well, you see, getting clients to buy your products is just the tip of the iceberg. To fully enjoy that extravagant lifestyle, you will need to recruit people and train them such that they are independent on their own.
This is the part where it’s easier said than done.
Another thing to note is that such organisation typically tend to “brainwash” themselves with motivational speeches, trainings and even spending almost the entire week seeing one another.
Here’s a question for you. What do you normally do after work? If you were to be involved in a Network Marketing company, your time after work will probably be spent hanging out with the same people in the organisation.
Hang out with the right people…
They will typically use this statement to “brainwash” you into thinking that by not mixing with them, the chances of you succeeding is slim. Not to mention, the less you hang out with them, the less chance you have of them wanting you to succeed.
You may be wondering what’s so difficult about recruiting, right? Recruiting people is not that challenging as there are many channels for you to outreach and recruit people.
What’s more challenging is how you want to impart your knowledge and skill sets to them. The problem with these type of jobs is the fact that most of them are actually full commission based.
This will be scary for the majority of us. Not knowing whether we will earn a single cent for that day. Just imagine working for 1 month and earning $0. This will be tough to swallow for those who have limited savings.
So, if our trainees do not have proper training and mentality, they will most probably leave the moment they start to doubt whether they can actually sustain their daily expenses.
This happens on a daily basis, where their aim is to ensure that all trainees have the same mindset as their leader. I have no experience being in a cult but if I had to imagine, it would be similar to how you are treated if you were to join in a Network Marketing company.
Your team leaders will do everything in their power to groom you into getting rid of your own identity and, instead, don on the same identity as the leaders of the company.
Failure to comply with said identity will result in your progression being slow. Don’t get me wrong, you can still succeed without being brainwashed, however, this tends to be slow and for most, it will not happen.
Flaunting of Income
This is kinda expected. The leaders tend to flaunt their lifestyle, expenses, cars, watches, flight tickets, etc. Anything to excite the trainees. These can be found on their social media.
And even as trainees, they will post all those “Thank You” posts showcasing their watches, cars and even the cheque from clients.
If this sort of thing is up your alley, then Network Marketing is indeed a perfect match for you.
Let’s Meet Up For Coffee!
I am highly certain that most of us have experienced this from some of our friends whom we have not been in contact for years. Out of the blue, these friends will call or text is requesting for a meet up. We all know why they initiated this meet up.
I happened to be contacted once by a friend whom I know from my army days. Though I suspected that he will try to sell me some of his products, schemes, etc. I just went on in case it is just a meetup with no hidden agenda.
Boy was I wrong. It turned out exactly as I had envisioned. Sad to say, I was extremely disappointed with this hidden agenda he had.
I’d recommend you to stay away from contacts who out of the blue contacts you to meet up. They are never sincere and are only doing it to get money out of you.
Sure, they may be cases where it’s genuine but for the most part, no.
Why Did I Leave?
I spent about 2 years of my time with a Network Marketing company, and the only reason I stayed was because of the people who were not brainwashed. These were the people I treasure most and learnt a lot from them rather than those brainwashed ones.
Apart from the company shutting down, I intended to leave as honestly it is just a waste of time. No offence to those who are currently in it for the long term, but truth be told, I do not foresee myself being in such a cult-like environment for the long run.
There is just no future in staying in that company. Sure, you will be able to learn soft skills that you might lack such as communication skills, leadership skills, etc. But after you have learnt all those, it is best to leave the company and search for other opportunities.
So, are you planning on joining one? Let us know in the comments below. Whatever you decide, just remember that you will be groomed in a cult-like environment.
