Working from home is living the dream right? No unnecessary travel, staying comfortable on the couch and taking lunch whenever you want. You'll likely never pull a six figure income from working at home. But you can do very well working at home.

I've been working from home for 5 years. It has it's good days and bad but I much prefer it to dealing with corporate rules and regulations and ridiculous policies. I'm in no means rich, but everything stays paid.

The truth is with any occupation, you have to be willing to invest your time and be completely dedicated. Before jumping into any profession, find a passion. Something you will enjoy and are unwavering in your devotion to being successful with it. Let's see if one of these top 5 legit work from home business will be your next passion.

1. Blogging or Vlogging

Blogging or Vlogging is the top decision for gaining cash at home. If you can dedicate the time and effort to posting regular vlogs or blogs, the potential for financial gain is highest here.

Do a little research and see if you can discover a niche you feel passionate about. It is possible to do both in conjunction with each other too. Potentially doubling earnings by including vlog video in with your blog posts.

There are several ways to earn with both options here. Blogging and even posting regular blogs alone are not likely to prove beneficial unless you familiarize yourself making them profitable.

Monetizing Blogs and Vlogs

Posting content on the web is not likely to drive much traffic without learning the basics of SEO and doing the leg work of keyword research. Then you need to sign up for advertising programs to monetize the incoming traffic. Posting content on the internet that is not monetized

How to Monetize Traffic

  • Google Adsense
  • Affiliate Marketing

Just putting content on the web is not likely to make you much. Applying for affiliate marketing and Google adsense will help you earn money off of traffic and potential sales. Thousands of companies offer affiliate marketing accounts you can sign up for several and are not limited to just one.

Before you get approved for an adsense account you need to put effort into your website and vlog. People are often denied due to lack of content. If you are denied with your initial applications to any of these revenue streams you can reapply later once you have built more content.

Steady income can take time but this is a legitimate way to work from home and earn a living. To get yourself through the slow phase of building content and learning about SEO I would recommend starting your blog as a side gig.

This will allow you the freedom to learn at your own pace without needing to depend on a full time income from it. Later when you start gaining a following and building traffic you can devote more time.

2. Virtual Assistant

Many companies will outsource simple tasks to virtual assistants. Tasks like answering emails, arranging appointments, responding to emails and so on. You can find many of these jobs will only require a few hours a day.
If you are an extremely organized individual with excellent multi-tasking abilities you can take on several virtual assistant jobs at once and create a steady supply of income.

Upwork (formerly Elance)is one of many freelance sites. It has many postings for virtual assistant positions regularly. Depending on your background and skill level will determine how much you get paid.

Even job search engines and websites often have virtual assistant openings posted. Depending on your background and experience there is no shortage of work available.

3. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Do you love reading and research? Do you often correct other peoples grammar and punctuation? If so then you should consider Amazon Mechanical Turk.

With over 130,000 HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks) I am sure you can find you would enjoy doing! Not all are interesting I have found and definitely some required a more skilled person than other tasks.

The HITs are listed as a price per with a time allotted for completion. Some HITS will be worth very little, as you build up your rating and accuracy you will become eligible for HITs with much more money. You are limited at the number of HITs you can complete in a day.

HITs will vary from reading an article and rating it (per Amazon Mechanical Turk guidelines), to as simple as finding a contact email for a company.

I doubt you will get rich with this one, unless you are uncommonly good at this sort of task. But you will likely find that most home based work scenarios are good for extra cash.

I question the idea of huge earnings with this one. You would have to be exceptional and dedicated at this kind of undertaking. Yet, you will earn some income with it.

Some freelance jobs only require the use of a computer.

  • Photography
  • Ghost Writing
  • App Development
  • Voice Overs
  • Translations
  • Transcription
  • Social media manager

This is only a small list of the options for freelance work today. There are options for even those with advanced degrees to fill freelance openings.

Some freelance work is less labor intensive but depending on what sites you sign up with determines pay rate. There are many sites specifically designed to put freelancers in touch with people and companies hiring.

Where to Sign up to Be a Freelancer

This list will get you started. It can be time consuming as you have to set up a basic portfolio. And include areas you are interested in and explain any experiences you have.

Each one offers a diverse selection of available work and connections. Signing up for multiples helps produce more income so long as you don't take on more work than you can finish in a timely manner. Most freelance jobs have deadlines you must adhere to.

5. Sales

Sales makes the last spot on the top 5. Why? Because it requires the most dedication and is more labor intensive than other forms of work from home businesses.

If you are particularly charismatic and are a good salesman then you can consider the plethora of sales related companies always hiring private contractors.

This type of work is hard, and sometimes you have to invest money in order to make it. The people that are successful at home based sales are those who are willing to put in exhaustive hours reaching out to the masses trying to make a sale.

Sales based home businesses are legit but not the most income bearing solution when looking to work from home. Sales should be the final desperate attempt if all else on the list fails.

Carrie Lee Night so glad there was something fresh you had never heard of on the list. I dabbled in Mechanical Turk for a while a few years ago, I just lost interest fast. Some of the tasks are relatively boring and I couldn't bring myself to keep at it.
