The Leadership Style of My Business (Participative Approach)
Leadership in the business is the capacity of a company’s management to set and achieve challenging goals, take fast and decisive action when needed, outperform the competition, and inspire others to perform at the highest level they can.
Among six business leadership styles (Autocratic, Charismatic, Democratic, Participative, Transactional and Transformational) I would like to work on Participative approach for my baby food business (Cerelac).
Leaders who employ this hands-on style seek to bring more democratic dimension to management instead of utilizing a traditional top-down approach. This leadership style recognizes that employees are stake holders in the organization and are entitled to their own voice. Participatory leaders empower employees who will be most affected by certain decisions to have participation and decision making capabilities in addressing those issues.
How I will execute the approach?
There are consultation style and joint decision making style. I would like to follow the joint decision making style.
Joint decision making style: It indicates a joint effort between leaders and subordinates, both providing input to make a shared decision. As this is my own business plan, therefore, I will be the leader. I will always sit for a meeting in every week with all of my employees where different issues about the business will be discussed among all. There would be always problems while running any business. As following participative leadership approach, I will always confer about all of the affairs with my employees. There would be group discussion about the probable solution of all potential and existing business difficulties and problems. The solution will be selected with the best of company’s interest considering all employees’ opinion. I believe in this way, as an owner I will get the best emulsion for any kind of destitution for my business. Good decision making is an essential skill for a successful business. Once all employees’ judgments will be heard it will be easier to make a better decision for the business. Some of them may bring such kind of unique ideas that I would never even imagined. This is the reason why joint decision making style would be my priority.
How participative leadership approach will help my future business?
1. Improves employee morale: Employee morale describes all overall outlook, attitude, satisfaction and confidence that employees feel at work. Participative approach ensures all above facts. As employees will be participating in the decision making process they will feel positive in their work environment. When employees are positive about their work environment and believe that they can meet their most important career and vocational needs, employee morale would be positive or high.
2. Encourages creative solutions: A solution to a problem is creative if it involves concepts not present in statement of the problem and the general knowledge surrounding it. As there will be joint decision making style, employees will be highly encouraged to come up with innovative solution. I would like to appreciate their artistic infusion with full importance. This is how my employees will be always thinking about new and unique ideas and solutions for my business.
3. Increases employee retention: Employee retention is an effort by a business to maintain a working environment which supports current stuff in remaining with the company. Involving my employees in company’s decision making process gives them the feelings of how important they would be for the organization. It will boost up their contentment and they will be more eager to stay for long time in the company. Employee retention is very important for a successful business. High employee turnover increases the expenses and also has a negative impact on the organization’s morale. Employee retention practices help to support an organization’s productivity. Participative leadership style will ensure employee retention practice which will benefit my company for long run.
4. Decreases competition, increases collaboration: As employee participation will be encouraged in all aspects, slowly it will decrease the competition among the employees. Consequently, it will enhance collaboration. Collaboration in the workplace is when two or more people (often groups) work together through idea sharing and thinking to accomplish a common goal. It is simply a team work taken to a higher level. Workforce collaboration ensures a project’s success. It will help to create an environment where my employees will feel valued for their unique skills as well as their inputs.
From above discussion, I believe, I will be able to become a successful leader in my future business following participative leadership style.
