What is Mastodon?
Mastodon is a decentralised open-source software, which allows users to choose an instance or server through which they can connect with other people.
Each instance has different topics, rules, and customisations. Each instance has the option to connect with other instances, but each instance has different administrators and rules. Anyone who has the skills to create and administrate an instance can do so, but they'll need to moderate and manage their own instance.
Why are so many people moving to Mastodon?
Mastodon has become one of the most popular open-source decentralised Social Media software options after the recent takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk. Because there's no single controlling entity for the software, it's very appealing to people who no longer want decisions made for them by a single person or corporation.
Open-source software is released under a license making it free for public use and customisation.
Decentralisation means the Social Media network isn't run by a single entity or corporation but can be managed by a decentralised network made up of many people.
Which Mastodon App should you use?
As Mastodon is an open source decentralised Social Media software, you can access it using a range of free apps. Each app is slightly different in terms of design and features. Some of the apps you can use to access your Mastodon server include:
- Mastodon - the official App
- Tusky for Mastodon
- Husky for Plemora
- Subway Tooter
- F-Droid Mastodon apps
Why can't you sign into the Mastodon app?
The reason many people have difficulty signing into the Mastodon app is simply that they missed one initial step; they didn't choose their home server. Selecting the server that your account is on, will allow you to sign into your Mastodon account.
There are hundreds of servers, and you could hypothetically have an account on each of them. Signing into the correct server is a key step to make sure you're signing into the same server where you registered your account.
Simple steps to sign into the Mastodon app
- Download and open a Mastodon app of your choice.
- Search for your server (the one you signed up on).
- If you can't find your server, type in the exact server address (such as Aus.Social)
- Follow the prompts to sign into your server.
- Enjoy accessing Mastodon on your phone or tablet.
