Being a Librarian is a noble profession

I am a Librarian by profession. I always say that in my bio when I am writing here in Hubpages. I am very proud to mention that I am a Librarian by profession. Although, there were some instances that I tried to knock down myself to eject it outside my profession. I became a Customer Service Representative, a Sales Marketing Agent, a Scriptwriter, however, at the end, I still go back to my original profession, which is being a Librarian.

For those, who already aware of my history, why I became a Librarian? I once became a Librarian's enemy number one when I was in the early Elementary grade. My librarian then slapped my fingers with a meter stick that is why I am now a Librarian because of my anger against that lady librarian.

Fast forward.

Nothing Against Other Professions

I am writing this article not to take against with other professions. Two decades ago, after my college graduation, I became a Library Assistant at a Law Firm. What will you expect with the Law Firm, there are lots of Lawyers, Law Enthusiast as well as Court Judges. What's the good thing, during my short stay in that Law Firm? About 90% of them respect what is my profession all about. They usually ask for a help, where to find this kind of law as well as other related issues for a particular crime or court decisions.

Next, when I got a chance to work as a School Librarian. About 85% of the students, teachers, school administrators as well as school maintenance staff, respect who am I as their School Librarian. I am not saying that 15% of them are not respecting me. What I am saying, those 15% are not really like to go in the library. In relation, I am much happier because most of them as looking for my best services to look for a particular information. As they say, the teacher for example, they are the master of a specific field of expertise, however, the librarian, although, doesn't know what exactly the content of a book, but knows where to get those information.

When, I became an Academic (College) Librarian, the respect from researchers, I gained that because, everything they wanted to ask, in less than a minute, I will give to them, what they've need. There's an instance that I said to them, "If I will not give the book that you've wanted in 5 minutes, the book that you are going to borrow, will be allowed to borrow for 2-weeks!" In which, the reality, I only allow them to borrow for 2-3 days only but subject for renewal. However, I gave them the book they want in a minute or less. So, the 5 minutes is far away from distance.

And when I became a Medical Librarian, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals gave respect to us as their Medical Librarian. Yes, they knew everything in the field of Medicine, however, they do not know, how to cure those illnesses if there's no book to read provided by their Librarian.

How to be a Librarian?

I remember, when I was in college, most of us were not aware, what is a Librarian. What is the job of the Librarian? Most of us think that a Librarian is only guarding books in the Library that even a janitor can do that. However, when I became a Librarian, I said to myself, my perception to being a Librarian as a career is different from what I used to know about them.

In order to be a Librarian, you should take a program, Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) and/or Master in Library and Information Science (MLIS). BLIS are offering right now mostly every region in the Philippines while the MLIS only offers in some specific regions specifically in National Capital Region. Here in the Philippines, there's no Doctor of Library and Information Science yet offered because there's a need to have at least 3 competent professionals in one institution with Ph.D. in Library Science. In which as of this writing, if I am not mistaken, there are four Ph.D. in Library Science professionals here in the Philippines, however, two of them, already passed away. The two Ph.D. in Library Science here are Dr. Irene Amores (my instructor), who's the owner of the License Number 0001 and Dr. Iyra Buenrostro Cabbab (my co-reviewee, when I am taking a Licensure Examination). Dr. Amores, took her Ph.D. in Library Science in the United States, while Dr. Cabbab took at Singapore if I am not mistaken.

To check my understanding here, there are lots of Ph.D. here in the Philippines that already teaching or offering their services in the field of Librarianship, however, most of them are not Ph.D. in Library Science. They are Doctor of Education major in Educational Management or Educational Leadership. Most of them were taken their Librarianship expertise in College and/or in Master's.

Ph.D. in Librarianship is only available in other countries mostly the first world countries who value the profession of Librarianship. In which, they believe that the Librarians are the master of all information.

I agree with you Liz. That is why even if I wanted to be a librarian in your country. I cannot because of the qualification. Thanks for commenting.

Liz Westwood from UK on December 06, 2019:

In the UK, becoming a librarian is quite hard to achieve. You need a lot of qualifications and many libraries have cut back on opening hours, so job opportunities are restricted. In the past I have found librarians to be very knowledgeable and helpful.

You have a cool job, Luis. I used to be a librarian when I was in primary school and high school. I remember my teacher (he was a Head Librarian at my school) directing the librarians to wrap the new books with the plastic to protect the book's cover from damage. I enjoyed my duty as a librarian at school. Thanks for sharing your story. It reminds my school memories.
