We All Know the Janitor
Whenever we think of business cut backs usually the first thing to go is maintenance, and under that category lies janitorial work, despite everything that they actually do janitors are often the first to be fired, replaced or laid off. Now if you will give me a chance I will hear to tell you in this article that not only is this unfair to the janitor but in fact they should probably be getting paid more then just minimum wage. So to get things started lets just ask ourselves, what do janitors actually do?
Yes they clean things such as you office or a number of other things depending on the business, you could say that they are the ones responsible for making the place look nice taking care of dirt, dust, stains, forgotten cups, candy wrappers, full garbage bins and a mess of other small things. if this was left up to just the employees everything would probably get done and they should do a little anyway, but not all of it would be down and it would take longer and would be a constant clean as you go environment which is not the most relaxing or comfortable to work in and would mean that sometimes they are to busy cleaning instead of helping customers or whatever that business might be, and this brings us right into my next point.
Sometimes in order to do the best job he can do the janitor will have to work bizarre hours just so he or she doesn't have to tip toe around other people which may include late night weekends or something ever changing depending on what is going on. Of course depending on the business the janitor as no choice in the matter and must work around other people which is not ideal. Janitors must take request such cleaning a specific room extra well adding even more on to their already long day.
The people responsible for cleaning your bathrooms and insuring that you are working in a germ free environment only get minimum wage. these people use techniques that most of use aren't even aware of, in order to do the best job in the shortest amount of time. On top of that sometimes the pattern or approach will change depending on the business needs making it a ever changing job. I happen to know that sometimes these hard workers have to clean multiple places in order to make ends meet since they are not being paid for what they are worth.
Although Super Mario Sunshine dramatizes the whole thing, it does a pretty good job showing us just what it's like to be a janitor. You clean the whole place top to bottom and you don't even get a thank you, screw up even a little and they yell at you, the moment the company makes business cuts, the janitor is the first to go, and they will have someone else doing extra work despite the janitor often times being the trained professional. Oh yes and I almost forgot to mention that they dive into situations where they could easily get sick and yet they get no benefits of any kind, no health insurance, no dental, no hearing, no nothing now often times they are contracted through another group separate from the very place they are cleaning but still.
In my mind janitorial work sits right there with plumbers, electricians and mechanics. Everybody needs them but unlike the later janitors aren't paid what they deserve, get no benefits and rarely even get a thank you for there efforts. I personally did janitorial work for a long time and I have to say as a janitor all of my hard work felt very underappreciated. So in conclusion, I know have of these things cannot be fixed so easily, but the next time you see the janitor where ever you may work I want you to take a moment to thank him or her for everything they do to make sure that you work in a clean and healthy environment. But what do you guys think please leave me a comment in the section below, I'm Wanderin Jim and I hope you all have a super happy day.
