Getting started on Upwork
This article focuses on starting your freelancing journey from Upwork platform, which is famous for high income projects and huge number of permanent clients. There are some hard ways and smart ways to rack up good amount of money online. While it is always difficult to begin something from the scratch, but it is never been easier than in today’s era to earn handsome money from the comfort of your homes. It is very essential for the readers to select the specific niche based on their experience, skills and passion.
As someone who is in freelancing for almost 5 years, I would highly recommend the readers to create their profiles on the popular freelancing sites. The popular and best freelancing sites are Fiverr and Upwork. Fiverr is low income platform but huge marketplace filled with one project clients, while Upwork provides much higher income permanent clients.
I am well aware of the competition and saturation of skilled individuals grabbing nearly all the clients making it almost impossible for the starters to stand on the ground on these sites. However, I would provide you the smart and best ways to grab your first client. It is always difficult to get first job on Upwork.
The very first hurdle in securing the job on Upwork is to get one’s profile approved. However, there are certain ways to approve profiles on Upwork. Firstly, try to include all the information on the profile to make it between 90% to 100% completion stages. Secondly, upload your original picture. Thirdly and most importantly, try to include some unique skills which are short on Upwork like Mobile Development and UI designs etc. You can search on google to find top demanding skills at Upwork. Include them on your profile no matter you have know-how of it or not. You can change your skills back to your area of expertise after getting approved.
Apart from all this, it is 70%+ chance that your profile would be rejected. However, there is a cheat way for getting it approved. Initially, upwork allows only 5 skills to be included on the profile. However, the skill limit enhances to 10 after rejection. It is highly recommendable from my side to include 5 additional skills in the skills section to make it to 10. This will get your profile approved after resubmission. I have tried and tested this on almost 5 different profiles.
The last obstacle in approving your upwork profile is the limitation of connects available to bid on the jobs. There are two suggestions to win your project despite of limited connects. Firstly, try to apply between 10 am to 1 pm US time. This will allow you to stand from the rest of candidates. Secondly, don’t use templates for bidding on jobs. If you want to win the project, you have to read the whole job description and then rewrite it in your own words by focusing on the relevance of your skills and experience in completing the client’s task done. This will do wonders for you.
It is very rare if you won’t be able to secure your first job after trying these methods. However, if you still struggle in getting the job then it is recommended to do following:
Shift Client to Upwork
If you are experienced freelancer and you have some active clients on the list then try to persuade them to Upwork Platform. This will boost your profile through reviews and history of tasks completed. However, if you are newbie then follow below step.
Buy 20 More Connects
The 20 connects costs around $3 which is very minimal. However, it is very wise to use them on the appropriate and relevant jobs. The first way is to only apply on the jobs where the client has described his requirements in detail. This proves the authenticity of the job posted and save you from wasting your connects as majority of persons use fake client accounts to get proposal templates. It is normally considered that jobs should only be applied for the approved clients or those having previous work history. Don’t do this. You don’t have to restrict yourself to approved clients as Upwork is a platform where vast majority of employers signed up for the first time
After trying each method outlined above and you are still unable to get a job on Upwork then it is the time to use your trump card. The trump card is to ask your friend to give you work on Upwork and request him to leave reviews on the profile. This will make you authentic and reliable candidate for the clients.
That’s it for the newbies to get boarded on Upwork. This is my first article on Hubpage and I kept it short for a reason. In my next articles, I would be discussing other platforms for making the money online. Please let me know how you felt about my article.
