I have been studying Digital Marketing over many years and have created websites using Google's guidelines, so I know the frustration.
Many website owners wants to get more backlinks for their website, and that is a good thing.
Because Google uses backlinks as a ranking factor for website optimization. Not having enough backlinks can impact your site, you may not get enough organic traffic from Google.
But the question we need to ask ourselves, who creates the backlinks. It is done by the website owner or someone else?
Today we will find the answer. First we need to know how backlinks are created.
Website Pointing to each other
A backlink is when someone comes to your website reads an article and liked so much, they decide to tell others about, by mentioning or linking to it in a post that they publish on their website.
This considered a powerful ranking factor in Google's eyes. To them, it is viewed as a recommendation from one website to another. Because another website finds your content informative and instructive Google spiders view these backlinks as a vote of confidence, As a result, over time your website will start to get increased traffic to it. The spiders now consider your content valuable to other users on the web.
It is like you get a thumbs up for the post or information that you have written on your website.
So what does it takes for someone to find your article interesting and instructive and then link to it?
In addition to having backlinks on your site, your site must have other ranking factors to attract visitors to your site. These must be added before you consider trying to get backlinks to your site. This process is called search engine optimization. So let's review at least 6 additional ranking factors.
We need to know how people search the web. Generally, they usually search for information in a specific niche or industry.
So, whatever search terms they type into Google these are called keywords, and if you think you have the skill or information you can write an article or create a Youtube video on that subject. Right now this is exactly what I am doing.
Title and Description
Therefore, your title must be a keyword or phrase that relates to the search query.
Additionally, each keyword needs to be qualified, meaning how many monthly searches it gets?. Have the keywords been answered by websites are showing up in the top 10 on Google front page? The best keywords are long-tailed keywords. Keywords or phrases that are too short- get used a lot and becomes competitive for a new website, this is because most authority sites are already using them.
Another thing too, In the header section of your site you must describe what your site is about. It cannot be random, these keywords must be niche specific. Suppose your website is about cooking but you want to focus on baking, then you should mention the various baking categories in the description. This will help the search engine to better understand what your website is all about. When writing posts on a specific topic it a good idea to mention the keyword/s in the first sentence too.
You need to break up your post by adding headings and subheadings. Why is this important? Here is a quote taken from https://www.poynter.org/educators-students/2017/4-guidelines-for-writing-seo-friendly-headlines/
“Headlines are lifelines to our readers. They grab attention, build trust and help time-pressed consumers focus on the stories they care most about.
They link readers with our content, giving us a chance to reach our audience across a sea of information. Headlines also help search engines decide whether our offerings match what users are looking for. Most search queries are two to four words long and consist of proper names and keywords. The best headlines will match the most common relevant search queries. "
When you are writing a post you should have a bunch of other closely related keywords on the subject, these are called tags.
Some of these related keywords could be used for your various heading or subheading in paragraphs.
This will attract Google search bots to crawl your site and rank it correctly to its content.
Even if a subject is already written about extensively, try and write it in your own words.
Google will penalized a website if it copy word for word from another website, that will not rank, even it has backlinks pointing to it.
Remember to rank higher in Google make sure to publish content with at least 1,000 words.
Many people wonder what are internal links on a website? Here is an Internal link definition.
These are pages that you linked to from inside your own website.
So how do you make an internal link? Well, let’s say you write two articles on how to bake a chocolate cookie and another about baking a raisin brand cookie.
When you are done writing each one, you can use the link button (hyperlink) to connect these two blog posts.
Each article has its own web address so you would copy them. Next just highlight or hover on the name of the other cookie in each post and then select the link icon to link them together.
The external link definition is as follows.
This is when you want to reference (point to) a specific website or an article, or an image on another website.
You highlight the name of the article or word, then using the hyperlink option enter the website that contains the information you are talking about.
When creating a hyperlink to another website you need to determine if this link is a 'dofollow or 'nofollow link.
They are viewed differently in google ranking.
So now you aware that in order to get backlinks you would need to pre-qualify your website, and that backlinks are not created by you the website owners, you maybe wondering how to contact a another website owner to view your content and give you backlinks.
There are different approaches, but be warned it is not as easy as it seems. Why?
Some website owners become desperate about getting their page rank higher in Google, they will ask for backlinks from anyone on the web, there are some websites that Google consider content farms, also site owners who use robots to create fake backlinks with hope of increasing their ranking from Google.
A word of caution, practice like these can get a website ban or penalize by Google. Google has published some useful guidelines to help website owners. See Google's guideline below.
I hope you found this article informative and instructive. Thank you for reading.
