Have you ever wondered why some teams are so successful while other teams remain unsuccessful?

There could be a myriad of reasons for this.

Some companies encourage an environment where teams can thrive and enjoy a lot of benefits.

The environment in some organizations, on the other hand, is not conducive to successful team building.

All teams have some basic needs which have to be fulfilled in order to optimize them to the maximum potential.

Here are ten ways to form a successful team.

These ten keys describe the environment that must happen within the team for successful teamwork.

Successful teamwork is the foundation stone for creating a dynamic and successful team.

1. The team knows it's mission

The team knows it’s goals and how to achieve them.

There is a clear sense of direction and purpose in all the team members.

The team leader makes sure that every team member understands the goals, purpose, and accountability of the team.

2. The team leaders encourage risk-taking

The team leaders, as well as the team members, nurture an environment of risk-taking.

The members don’t feel suffocated and are free to take risks in order to achieve team goals.

It is very important to let the team members know that they can take calculated risks. These risks can help the team to achieve its goals.

Team members know that they will not be taken to task for risk-taking. They know that they will be appreciated for it.

3. Team members must respect each other

If there is a lack of respect and open communication, the team members will not feel free to express their opinions and thoughts.

This will be harmful to the group in the long run.

Every member's opinion should be respected and no one should look down upon other members.

All team members should honor the diverse viewpoints, opinions, and experiences of other members.

Team members should be viewed as unique people with unique experiences and exclusive opinions to offer to the team.

4. Strong commitment to the group is vital

All the team members should have a deep commitment to the group, to its decisions and actions.

This will happen as the team spends time together in formulating new norms and guidelines together.

The team should spend a lot of time together

They should not just be involved in work all the time.

They should also take some time to go on an outing or a party and have fun together

This increases their commitment to each other and helps to enhance the group environment.

5. The team should encourage creativity

Creativity and innovation should be expected and encouraged.

If someone comes up with an innovative idea, it should not be rejected saying ‘we have already tried once’ or ‘what a foolish idea.’

The beauty of having a team is that every member brings his or her own unique flavor to the group.

This makes it more exciting because of the sheer variety of thoughts and opinions.

6. Committed to continuous improvement

The team should be able to periodically examine their processes, practices, and progress

They should openly discuss matters about whether they are making progress or have diverted from their goals.

There should be periodic review meetings where every member speaks out his or her opinion.

These meetings will help the team to come back to the original purposes of the team and to refocus their efforts and attention.

These meetings are extremely important to make sure that the team is progressing on the right path and in the right direction.

The communication in this meeting should be open and honest.

7. Good and prompt at resolving conflicts

It is inevitable for conflicts to arise in the team in due course of time.

Conflicts are not bad even though they may seem to be bad.

Conflicts are good if they are resolved amicably and properly without hurting the parties involved.

In fact, once the conflicts are resolved then there is a greater sense of coherence and commitment in the team.

The team leadership plays a big role here.

The leaders should ensure that conflicts are resolved as soon as possible.

These conflicts should not affect the morale of the team and should not be allowed to fester.

8. Involves members in the leadership process

This is also called participative leadership.

All the team members are involved in leading the meetings, assigning tasks, and making notes about the decisions

They are all held accountable for the progress the team is making.

Every member will feel a greater sense of commitment, responsibility, and belonging because of this leadership participation.

It also means that every member of the team actively contributes to the success and progress of the team.

9. Maintains high standards of conduct

The team members are committed to high-quality conduct.

Team members make high-quality decisions and everyone supports them.

The team leaders encourage such decision making and fully support it. The goal is to fulfill the overall purpose of the team.

10. There is good communication

Communication doesn’t mean just speaking but it also means listening.

All team members should learn the art of deep listening.

A good listener is just as important as a good communicator.

The team leader should ensure that there is a good level of communication in the team.

It is also important to maintain confidentiality in the group.

Whatever is shared in the group should never be shared outside it.

These are the 10 keys that will make a team successful.

Usually, it’s not the goals that are challenging to the group but the day to day interactions and functioning are important

If a team can get these 10 principles in place, they will definitely experience success and fulfillment of their goals.

Now that you know what it takes to succeed as a team, just learn about and implement these 10 principles and enjoy success as a team

Always remember that teamwork is dream work.

A team comprises several people with different skill sets working towards a common goal. This helps the team brainstorm on several ideas and maximizes learning. The task becomes easier and faster when the understanding among the team members is better.

Prateek, the tasks become easier when the whole team is involved. You have realized through practical experience how important is a team. Teamwork is dreamwork.

Teams enable us to leverage the experience and skills of others.

Prateek Jain from Madhya Pradesh, India on January 22, 2020:

Team work is a practice which is followed in every section of society. Whether you are a business man or a service provider it is essential to develop a team spirit with your supplier and employee or bosses. I myself work in a bank with a team of 6 people excluding me. There were several tasks assigned to us on daily basis whereas it is very easy to complete the task in given time frame because of the team support and their commitment towards their job. If their will be no support then it is never easy to completer the given task in pre determined time.

I completely agree with you Nitin sir.

You explained the matter very well.

Hi Sumit. Thank you for your valuable comment. You are right to say that the experience of working together is amazing.

We can achieve only so much alone. But when we leverage the skills, wisdom, and experiences of other people in the team, we can achieve multifold more.

Teamwork is absolutely necessary to be successful.

Sumit Chakrabarti from Kolkata on January 21, 2020:

A great article on successful team building! Having worked in the team environment for more than 10 years, I can clearly recall the significance of teamwork and mistakes that I and my team members committed. Still, the experience of working together and achieving goals was amazing despite the glitches. Your article has re-emphasized the core necessity of working together, helping each other, and taking pride in each other's success. There is a famous team anthem of my favorite football club Liverpool which says "You will never walk alone," and it applies wherever teamwork is essential for success. Quite an apt and useful article. Great work Nitin ji!
