What's The One Thing You Need To Know To Successfully Sell Any Type Of Insurance?
So you want to be an Insurance Agent? In today's society, we are taught to go high school; Then go to college and get your bachelor’s degree; Then go back to college and get your master's degree. In the mean time, get a job in the field of your degree. And Finally get your PhD and continue to work your way up in a reputable company. We are taught that this is the path to success and financial freedom. But this is not necessarily true.
There are a plethora of careers where you can get some type of certification, either from a technical school or just through a simple test, and still be very successful and have financial freedom – Selling insurance is one of these careers.
You do not have to have a degree in order to sell insurance, but usually, any type of college course you take that is related to insurance may prove to be beneficial during your preparation process. Typically there are business, finance and accounting courses that you can take to help get you ready for your exam. The only benefit to having a degree is if you plan on working in the corporate level of a large, reputable brokerage company. In this case, candidates with a degree may be considered over candidates that have no education at all. Of coarse the first step and the most important thing that you have to initially worry about is preparing for the insurance exam and to do that you must first look up the requirements in your state, because the process varies slightly from state to state.
Individual insurance agents typically get paid based off commission. Usually the companies that they are representing will give them leads in their area. Their job is to present details and sell policies for life, health, disability, long term care, property and casualty Insurance to all interested parties.
Property and Casualty Insurance brokers deal with policies that provide protection for people and business from any type of financial loss resulting from automobile accidents, theft, storms, fires or any thing else that can cause damage to your property. If you are selling to business owners, your policy would can also include product liability claims, medical or malpractice claims, and workers' compensation costs.
Life, health, and automobile insurance are pretty self explanatory. Life policies pay pre-determined person, also know as the beneficiary, a pre-determined amount of money when the policyholder dies. There are several ways for a person to set up their life insurance. The beneficiary, upon the death of the insuree, can receive retirement money, money for the child or children's education, or other specified benefits. Health insurance agents sell policies the pay for costs of medical fees or loss of income due to an injury or illness. Dental care can be added and also long and short-term disability policies may be sold to individuals.
In today's world, many agents are specializing in more than one type of insurance and it would be wise for you to do the same thing.
In addition to the normal policies being sold, there are many Insurance agents who are specializing, offering and selling financial planning services. Financial planning services usually include estate planning, retirement planning, an assistance in setting up pension plans for business owners. On top of that, if you really want to make the most out of selling insurance, you can also become licensed to sell variable annuities, mutual funds and any other securities.

Do You Want To Sell Insurance In Different States?
As I mentioned earlier, in order to sell insurance you must have your license. And each state has its own requirements that you individual have to abide by. The differences are usually just a tad different. Most commonly, you will need some type of insurance related classes and take and pass a state exam.
Commonsense and Rule-Of-Thumb is to get a license in the state where you plan on working. So if you live in Georgia and you are planning to move to Seattle in six months, then you would probably want to wait until you get to Seattle to get your insurance license. You will need a separate license for health, life, property and casualty insurance. Here are some general requirements and/or preparation you may need:
- 20-40 or more hours of General Insurance courses
- 6-12 hours of Ethics courses
- Practice exams and quizzes
Once you are done with your preparation, you will have to pay to take the insurance exam. You will, in most states, be required to take tests covering both insurance fundamentals, as well as state insurance laws.
Right now it is kinda hard for people who live on the border of two states and want to sell insurance. You can live in one state and drive ten minutes and be in another state. Also, you have people who have many years of insurance experience and yet they have to re-take the exam if they decide to relocate. This has been an ongoing problem but as of late, the insurance industry is trying to move toward a uniform state licensing standards. Also allowing reciprocal licensing which will allow agents who are licensed in one state to be able to easily obtain their insurance license in other states.
Typically, you can go to your local university for training or you can go to company's like Prime America – they recruit agents and help them with the process. They do not pay for you to take the exam but it's good to have the assistance. If all else fails, you can easily go on the internet and take some online insurance courses.
Expand Your Horizon And You Will Expand Your Income!
When selling insurance, it would be wise to become an agent for a well-known and financially stable company. The big companies will be able to provide you with quality leads. These companies spend tons of money on online advertising. There are hundreds of thousands of people looking for insurance and one of the first places they go for information is the internet. They go online and get their free quotes. If they go through the process to get a free quote, then they are more than likely going to purchase an insurance policy in the near future. These are the people you want to talk too because these people took time out of their day to search for something you are offering. These are the best prospects because you do not have to give them a sell pitch. They will already know what they want and all you have to do is explain to them the specific details. This is the one thing you need to know successfully sell insurance.
Before you go meet with prospects, you need be positive that you know the “ins” and “Outs” of every single policy and for every situation. You need to prepare yourself for any possible question that you think a prospect may ask. Think of things that you would have questions or concerns about for any given policy. Do yourself a favor – Do not make yourself look stupid! If you want to sell insurance, you need to take it serious and be the best agent this earth has ever seen!
Are your polices The Best in The Industry? Before you join a company, it would be wise to compare their policies, finances, customer service, reputation and overall images. The easiest insurance policy to sale is the “best policy”. You will feel so confident when meeting with a prospect knowing that you truly have the best there is to offer. If you believe that you are selling the best, the prospects will also believe that you are selling the best. This will make your job a heck-of-a-lot easier.
If you miss a Phone call from a friend, How fast will you call them back? The most important thing to know if you want to properly learn how to sell insurance is to treat your prospects like you've known them all your life. Do not be afraid to immediately call back your prospects. If you know your material, you should not have anything to worry about. Just do your job and be positive.

Your blog is very informative. I guess figuring out how to give quotes is a good way to add business to my website. http://www.tampafloridainsure.com when you mentioned leads and a large company. Even though I just got my license I feel a little overwhelmed at the phone calls. Probably because the leads I receive are not at all quality.

I never realized that selling insurance didn't require a college degree. Is the exam to become certified pretty difficult? I think I would like to complete it before finishing college in order to work at a better-paying job as I put myself through college. It sounds like a great option, thanks for breaking down the specifics! http://insurance-agency.amfam.com/CO/timothy-brown...

Instead of taking extra courses or trying to find the time to learn how to do it yourself, consider hiring someone who already know how and still reap in the rewards of "selling the product". Agent Link Marketing helps out with out.
