Google Adwords Is a Keyword Tool That Helps You Pick Keywords
There is a specific protocol regarding how to pick keywords and include them in an article or webpage that is the best way to gain the most search engine traffic. Optimizing an article or webpage to gain the most search engine traffic is not as easy as just using a keyword tool, such as Google Adwords, to find the relevant keywords (also known as a keyword phrase) that Internet users are searching for and then implementing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. There is more to it, which includes using similar keywords to draw more attention to your article from searches that include words that are similar to the keywords you are focusing on. Using the following keyword picking protocol will increase the chances that an article or webpage will be found by people searching for relevant information and will likely increase search engine traffic, even if they do not use the exact title of your article or webpage in their search query.
Step 1: Use A Keyword Tool To Identify the Best Keywords
The first step when assessing which keywords are the best keywords to write an article or webpage around is to use a keyword tool, such as Google Adwords, to assess whether the keywords you are considering using are being searched for and how much competition there is for the keywords (meaning, how many other articles and websites already address the keywords under scrutiny). If there is not sufficient interest (1,000 or more global searches per month) in the keywords you are contemplating using, or if the competition is “high”, due to a lot of existing articles and webpages already addressing the keywords, try some variations until you find keywords that are generating sufficient search queries and do not have too much competition. Of course, there are times when there are no suitable alternatives, in which case, Step 2 helps to increase the chances that your article or webpage will be found by Internet searchers.
Step 2: Make Note of Similar Keywords Provided By Keyword Tool
Step 2 is the crux of how to gain the most search engine traffic from your target keywords. Instead of just writing an article or webpage based solely on the keywords you have determined are the ones you are going to focus on, make note of the next ten to fifteen similar keywords that the keyword tool identifies as ones that are similar to the one you are focusing on. You will use the similar keywords as you implement Step 3.
Step 3: Use The Similar Keywords Provided By Keyword Tool
Use both your identified keywords and the similar ones you noted in Step 2 in your article or webpage. Make sure you use the similar keywords you noted in the subheadings within your article. Writing an article or webpage using both the keywords you identified and the similar ones provided by the keyword tool will greatly enhance the chances that your article or webpage will be found by Internet searchers that use similar search terms as the one you are primarily focusing on.
Step 4: Use The Keywords Provided By Keyword Tool Wisely
While using the identified keywords (keyword phrase) and similar keywords in your article or webpage, follow these Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tips.
- Use the identified keywords in the Title, once the first few sentences, and one or more times in the first third of article or webpage.
- Keep the usage of the identified keywords to a density of approximately 1% of the total words.
- Use the similar keywords identified by the keyword tool in the subheading titles and in places within the article or webpage in which they can be used naturally.
- Use the identified keywords and similar keywords to name any pictures on your article or webpage.
- Use the identified keywords and similar keywords in any meta description that is included with your article or webpage.
Using Similar Keywords To Stay Ahead Of Google Search Optimization Changes
Using similar keywords identified by the keyword tool in your article or webpage will not only increase the chances that your article or webpage will be found when Internet users are searching for the relevant topic, but it will also keep your article or webpage in line with changes to the Google search algorithm. Google’s search algorithm has become much more sophisticated and now identifies not only keywords, but it also identifies synonyms of your targeted keywords. Using both your keywords and similar ones identified by a keyword tool will likely help the ranking of your article or webpage in search engines. Just make you use them in a natural way. Google’s search algorithm has become more sophisticated when it comes to identifying the use of keywords in awkward ways in an effort to increase the density of keywords within an article or webpage. It is better to use keywords less often and keep them within a context that flows naturally.

Keywords that are highly searched for definitely always have stiff competition. For me, I just write what I like but most of the time, traffic is not much.

The big problem with key words, in my opinion, is that the ones that are popular today may not be tomorrow and, unless you want to spend the rest of your life adjusting your keywords, they may not be such a good idea. And then there's the Penguin. And then there's the Panda. Spank. Spank. Spank.
Personally, I think that keywords stifle creativity and rarely use them, though I know quite a few people that have turned a pretty penny by learning how to use them effectively.

Google has already made changes to Adwords keywords tools. The traditional version is no longer available, but you can still get essentially the same information using Google Adwords, just via a different route. They seem to be wanting to drive users towards using PPC advertising and away from using Adwords keywords tools for doing research, but it can still be done.
