Earn Money On HubPages
So you like to write; maybe simply to express yourself, or perhaps you enjoy sharing your knowledge with others. You take pride in your work and you find fulfillment in it. But it would be nice to earn some money from it too, wouldn’t it? And maybe you could even earn a lot of money. Well, if you are dedicated, committed and up for a challenge, here is a formula for how you could do just that by writing on HubPages.
How Do You Earn On HubPages?
HubPages have an Ad Program that you can sign up for (you’ll need a Google AdSense account for this), and once you have done this, they will pay you a portion of their advertising revenue (about 60% of the total that your articles generate). The exact formula for how they work out payments is known only to them, but it usually comes out at between $2 and $5 per 1000 views. I’m averaging just over $3 per 1000, which is about the norm, so let’s work with that.
They also operate an Amazon Program, and you can earn additional money by signing up for this and placing appropriate Amazon ads (or in text links) on your articles (known as hubs). But the majority of most people’s earnings comes from the Ad Program, so we’ll focus on that in this article.
Earnings accumulate daily until they reach $50, after which they are paid into your PayPal account on the 28th day of the following month. You can then either transfer your earnings into your bank account, or leave them on PayPal to spend as and when you want.
But if you are earning big, you will obviously want to transfer them to your bank account.
So how are you going to go about earning a good amount of money on here? Well, in this article I'll describe what you'll need to do to earn the sort of money you are looking for.
What You’ll Need To Do
First, you'll need to open an account with HubPages and sign up for the Ad Program (and Amazon Program if you wish). Then, start writing some good quality, keyword targeted articles (hubs) which people will love to read, and hopefully share with their friends (keywords are simply words and phrases that people search for by typing them into Google or the other search engines).
A good hub can get 300 – 500 views per day. Some get much more. However, others may flop and only get a couple of views per month. But if you target good keywords that people are searching for regularly, you should find you get plenty of views on most of your hubs. Some will take a while to get noticed though, so don’t expect too much straight away. Just keep writing and the views will come.
You’ll also want to promote your hubs on social media – particularly Facebook and Pinterest. This will bring more views. But what you really want is for other people to start sharing your hubs with their circle of friends. That’s when you can really see your views rise. Occasionally a hub will go viral and generate thousands, or even tens of thousands, of views in a few days. You can really earn well when that happens.
Another way of getting more views to your hubs is to place useful and informative comments on other people’s blogs who are writing in the same niche as you are, and have your name linked back to your HubPages profile. Or you could even do guest posts on blogs, with an appropriate link in the text back to one of your hubs.
The most important thing, however, is to write lots of good hubs. The more hubs you have, the more chance you will have of getting some of them ranked highly in the search engine results pages (SERPS).
So, if you write good quality, informative hubs you will earn money. And if you promote your hubs you will earn more. But first, it’s a good idea to decide how much you would actually like to earn. What is "big money" to you?
How Much Would You Like To Earn?
Big money means different things to different people. To some it might be $500 a month; others may be thinking more in terms of $5000 a month. Either of these is possible if you set your mind on what you want to accomplish, and are prepared to do the required work to get there.
But as an example, let’s say you are aiming for $3000 a month. How are you going to achieve that?
Well, let’s do the math:
As I said earlier, I average a little over $3 per 1000 views. So that’s about $1 per 300 views. At that rate, to earn $3,000 you will need 3,000 X 300 views, which is 900,000 views.
So to earn $3,000 a month, you need to be getting around 900,000 views per month!
That’s a lot of views. So how are you going to achieve that?
Well, 900,000 views per month comes out at 30,000 views per day. So lets suppose you are a well established "hubber", you are ranking well in Google for a large number of keywords, and you are getting extra traffic from all the promotional work you have done. So on average, your hubs are getting around 50 views per day each. Some more, some a lot less, but that’s about the average.
30,000 divided by 50 = 600
So based on that formula, you’ll need to write about 600 hubs to earn $3,000 a month. OK, it might not work out quite like that. And many people would say that averaging 50 views per day per hub is a bit ambitious. And maybe it is. But it can be done if you select your keywords carefully and do enough promotional work, as well as write very high quality content that really adds value to people’s lives. In fact, some people are averaging a lot more than 50 views per day per hub, so it is realistic.
It will be a lot of work, and it may take some time to get there. But remember that while you are working towards it, your earnings will be steadily growing. And once you are there, your earnings should keep coming in with just a little bit of regular attention to your hubs to keep them fresh and up to date. But even if you left them completely alone, it’s likely that your earnings could continue at a similar level for many years to come. So it’s largely residual income once you have built it.
Earn $1000 a Month By This Time Next Year
If you only want to earn $1000 a month (or you see that as your first big step) you could reach that in 12 – 18 months if you work really hard.
Just focus on writing 200 great quality, informative, keyword targeted hubs, and promote them as much as you can. Write 4 per week and you’ll be there in a year! Even if you only write 2 per week, you’ll still make it in 2 years.
5 Tips to Write a Great Hub
If you write great hubs, people will want to read them and share them. They will also rank better in Google. So here are 5 tips to help you do that:
- Write detailed, comprehensive articles, at least 700 words in length, but ideally 1000 – 1500 words. More if you wish.
- Target specific keywords, but write for your readers – not for Google (i.e. write naturally).
- Break your hubs into sections, and your sections into paragraphs. Use punctuation and grammar properly. Avoid spelling mistakes and typing errors.
- Add at least one photo (but more is better) that you are legally entitled to use, and attribute it properly (if required).
- Use videos, polls, tables etc. as appropriate.
But What If I Can’t Achieve It?
“But what if I never get there?” you might be thinking. “I could do all that work and not get the rewards I was expecting”. Yes that’s true; it could happen that way. But there’s an old saying that goes “If you aim for the stars and miss, you’ll still reach the moon”. Or words to that effect. So even if you don’t make it, you’ll still do very well from your efforts. And you might make it all the way to $3,000 a month. You might even make $5000 a month – or even more. I don’t know of any other website that offers the potential that HubPages does at this moment in time; so why not decide what it is you are aiming for and get started today?

Thanks for this great article. From my little experience in hubpages, the only article I wrote, that attracts the most of views than others, was based on keywords inspired from google "search suggest".
I simply chose a search suggested phrase about the subject , which in the same time is either not existing in the first page search results list (a bit hard), or there were just few results. In this way , I used highly searched keywords, with negligible competition. And that what happened, my article appears on the first Google search results page (exactly the third , on most keywords used).
Furthermore, I don't protomote the article, and it gets 20 views per day on average, mainly from organic Google search.

Hubpages is the only writing site I ever found to be worthwhile. Rankings dropped right down a while ago but they are recovering nicely now. Target specific keywords that people are looking for and you should do ok.

Thank you Barbara. I'm actually basing this on earning $5 per hub per month on average. My research tells me that a number of people make this and some make much more, so it seems reasonable. Unless you know different of course. I know average hubbers only average $1 per hub per month, but this is not about being average. If you can get a number of good keywords on page 1 of Google there's no reason why you should not far exceed this amount.

This hub is excellent, but I haven't heard of anyone that earns $3.00 per hub. Average hubbers only earn about $1.00 per hub if they average things out. I compared this figured with some other writers. You can earn the $1000 a month if you work hard enough, like a hub a day for 3 years.

I don't think you've taken into account the hubber/hubpages 60/40 split. , Based on your example, you'd need a total of 1,500,000 views per month, not 900,000 to earn $3000 per month. Both are extremely unlikely.
That's not to say that earning figure couldn't be reached, but it would most likely be through a big proportion of amazon/ebay sales which offer a much higher return than $3 per 1000.

I'm glad you decided to post this hub. I think that if someone put their mind to it, then the possibilities are endless here. Yes, there is always the concern about how much traffic you will get and what not, but if you write what you enjoy and are passionate about, as well as incorporate all the important things that you mentioned (Google SEO, photos, etc.), then you should see your numbers increase.
