How to Get Listed on Google, Bing, and Yahoo! for Free
Just over two years ago, I answered one of those seemingly silly ads for a home-based business through online advertising called affiliate marketing. It promised that if I followed there step by step process, I would be able to make extra money to support my family and never have to work for anyone else again. They also promised a 53 day money back guarantee if I signed up; all I had to do was send them $49.
At the time my wife and I were struggling financially and I had no prospects for a good job to make up the difference. I did not really believe the ad nor did I believe that they would honor their 53 day money back guarantee. But, since I had no other ideas and I desired to build a stream of residual income, I thought "what the heck" for $49 why not give it a try.
After I signed up, my $49 quickly ran up to $130 as I was required to register a web domain and sign up for a full year of web hosting. Great I thought I might be able to get my $49 back but they would never refund the web hosting fee. Along with the home based business software, I received some free bonus CDs including one on bummarketing.
Previously I had also signed up with Linkshare to place other ads on one of my websites for office furniture.
After I registered the domain and built the suggested website for the home based business, I went to the next step to sign up for a pay-per-click on Google Adwords. I entered the suggested keywords and Google came back with a caution that that business was saturated and I would probably not make money on it.
At that moment, I decided the whole thing was a sham and I wrote and asked for my money back. As expected I got a return email calling me lazy and putting me down as a quitter. Still, I persisted and eventually they sent all my money back including the $49 for the home based business course and the $70 for the one year of web hosting.
Ironically, just as the money was sent back to me, some one accessed a linkshare ad for Overstock.com, purchased $3000 of furniture and I received an $83 commission for it. I also began to follow instructions from the bummarketing CDs and had numerous articles find there way to the frontpage of Google just as the original ad promised. As of September 2010 after two years, I had a website listing on the front page of all three major search engines including Google, Bing, and Yahoo!
This hub discusses a few important tips on how to get a website placed on the first page of the top three search engines - Google, Bing, and Yahoo!
Find a Niche You Know and Believe In
The first thing I did to get my website on the first page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! for little pay was to find a niche I knew and believed in. When you find a niche you know and believe in, then you will be more interested to put in the necessary work to learn about that niche and to learn how to build a site that would reach its intended audience.
Put in the Necessary Upfront Work
The second tip for getting a website on the front page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! for little pay is to be ready to put in the necessary upfront work. To build a site that gets attention on the top three search engines, you have to build into your site a lot of content pertinent to the niche you are attempting to exploit. In my case, my site had to do with saving landfill space which is ecology friendly which the heads of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! love. But, in order to get the ratings, the site has to be loaded with content relevant to your target niche. In order to present the volume of necessary content, you have to dig it up which takes time and hard work.
Build in Lots of Pertinent Content
As stated in the second tip about putting in the necessary upfront work, you must build in lots of pertinent content to get your webpage listed high in the top three search engines. My site had over 40 pages when it was finally landed on the first pages of the big three search engines and I continued to add more. By adding more content I widened my tent stakes to reach a wider audience or put another way I expanded my man-made cyber pool from which to catch more fish interested in my type of bait. To be ranked on the front page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! add lots of relevant content.
The third tip for how I got my website on the first page of the top three search engines for little pay is that I was patient. As they say Rome was not built in a day, so too a popular website does not spring to prominence overnight. In my case, I worked for over two years to get my sight listed on the front page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! I just kept adding more pertinent content and extending the reach of the website to a wider audience in order to draw from a larger pool of fish without violating the niche I had chosen. Patience in internet advertising is a virtue and you need to know that seldom will an idea pay off instantly. So be ready for the long haul before you see huge traffic and positive returns.
Learn about Page Construction and Keywords
A fourth tip for how I got my website on the first page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo!for little pay is I learned about page construction and keywords. In the beginning, when I first built my site, I did not have a clue about website design and admittedly I still don't know as much as I should. However, over time I came to recognise at least two important points about web page construction.
First, I realized that those who surf the web want simple and clear content with a lot of white space. This is the age of information at the speed of light. People do not want to waste their time with overly stuffed pages with confusing lay outs. They want it simple and to the point.
Second, I learned that the way to draw folks to my content was to build in persistent keywords into the content that are relevant to the content. Travis Sago of Bummarketing says that the way to succeed in internet marketing is to find a hungry crowd, find out what they are hungry for, and give it to them. Finding the right keywords and placing them strategically throughout your content is the bait that will land the fish on your hook. But don't overdo it. The top search engines are not friendly to those who overly stuff their content with the same montonous keywords.
So in order to get your website placed on the first page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! without paying find the right bait to draw the hungry crowd you're fishing for i.e. learn about page construction and keywords.
Choose a Top Web Hosting Program
A fifth tip for how I got my website placed on the first page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! for very little pay is to choose a top web hosting program. Good top notch web hosting sites have tremendous resources and services to assist in the promotion of your website. Personally, I go with 1&1 from the UK and they are fabulous (at least to me). I have never had any problems getting ahold of their 24hr service and tech support. They are live on the phone and sooo helpful. When I had problems placing google adsense ads on my site(s) they figured out the problem with the code, taught me how to alter the code when necessary, and I have not had any problems since.
Good web hosting also has Search Engine Optimization programs that help you get placed on all the different search engines besides the top three.
Here in lies the little pay. I pay like $15 every three months for up to 25 websites; $9 a year for the web domain, and $5 a month for SEO assistance. But I have not paid one penny (except in time and opportunity cost) to get my website on the front page of my niche. No PPC ads on Google, Yahoo! or Bing and I have the third position on the front page of Yahoo!, the fifth position on Bing, and the eighth or ninth position on Google. Good web hosting has helped tremendously with these placements.
Write Content Articles with Back Links to Your Site
A sixth tip for how I got my website placed on the front page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! is to write content articles with back links to my site. I kind of got lucky with this one. Early on in 2008, I followed Travis Sago's advice in bummarketing and wrote an article about my niche, published it on Ezinearticles, and placed a back link in my bio. That article was one of the first I had land on the first page of Google (it is still there almost two years later) and drew more interest than I anticipated. That caused many people to learn about my eco-friendly site which they began to access. I learned then that writing articles is a good way to get traffic through my site(s). It helped me get the ball rolling.
Consistently Add Fresh Content
The final tip I will highlight here is to consistent add fresh content to your site. Search engines do not like it when sites become stale with old information. I believe that one of the factors that has allowed my website to find a place on the front pages of the three major search engines is that I periodically add new and fresh content to it.
So those are some tips on how I get my website on the first page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo! with very little pay.

Ecoggins, as web designer myself I have to say you hit the nail on the head with the advice to get your web site on page one of google, of course with the Panda update there's a lot more factors that go into page ranking, which is why I ended up writing a 4 part series of SEO tips, it'd be cool if you checked it out and got some use from it. Voted up, useful and thanks for SHARING!

Great article, and good on your for making it through the first hurdle.
ecoggins (author) from Corona, California on January 18, 2012:
I don't know all the reasons why a page gains ranking, but last year Google rolled out its Panda algorithm which changed the way sites are ranked. My page has since dropped to Page 4 or 5 as well. In my case I probably use my keywords too much and I do not have enough backlinks to my site. Find a way to get more people to promote your site on their sites or blogs. You might blog a little more and reference your site as well.
jpastor from California on January 17, 2012:
I have a site that had page rank 2 and now its on the 5th page. I'm pretty sure I get more traffic than the sites on the first page. What could be going on with my site?

Good hub. Another important point is that the "fresh content" should come in the form of fresh, new blog posts within the site. When keywords are used in the individual blog postings, the Search Engines find the blog posts as fresh current info and often times rank the link very high.
ecoggins (author) from Corona, California on November 25, 2011:
mygooglemarketing, Thank you for the positive feedback. I think I have failed to take my own advice. Since the new panda requirements came out, I have not added fresh content and I so overused the keywords. My site fell from the first page of Google to the third page.

They have many tools and tutorials to help you understand web-based marketing and how to promote and set up a successful internet-marketing campaign. Wealthy Affiliate is not cheap but even three to six months of it would highly beneficial (if of course you apply the material and follow their advice).

Micromaniac, I am glad that you found this information helpful. I took a look at microjob.com and I guess your site is advertising work at home opportunities. If your membership is getting you more traffic then it seems worthwhile. My site is in a very low competition niche with less demand than home business sites. The pay out potential is also less than home business sites.
Micromaniac on October 19, 2010:
I have been trying for a while now and with not much success to get my site seen. Thanks for the tips and by the way a new site called microjob.co has given me some hope. I have seen more traffic in the few days I have been a member. I would like to know your opinion.

eovery and Dave, thank you both for dropping by and leaving such encouraging comments. It took me over two years to get my site where it is today.
