Earn Money Teaching English Online

Jennifer is a polyglot and founder of Learn German with Jenny and Learn French with Alicia, two popular YouTube channels.

Working from home or even better from around the world as a digital nomad is a dream for many. It gives you flexibility, independence and the opportunity to work from any location: your favorite café, the library, an African lodge or even from the beach. I have realized that dream and gathered a lot of experience in the online language industry and thus, I can give you a lot of helpful tips to help set you up for your first online lessons and to find great companies that are currently hiring.

Basic requirements

Students depend on a good audio quality when learning a language online. In addition, many of them prefer to see the teacher who they are learning the language with. Besides, gestures, facial expressions and movements of the mouth are used differently in each culture and should be an integral part of the language training. For these reasons, you will need a high-quality headset, preferably one that has a USB-connector, a high-speed internet connection (a download speed of 1000kb and an upload speed of 400kb have been working well for me) and a webcam.

TutorABC is a company from Taiwan who is currently looking for English teachers to teach beginners, intermediate and advanced students. The knowledge of Chinese is not required as you will only be teaching students who already know some English and will not need a bilingual teacher. The company has its own virtual classroom where you will log in before each session. It is a conference room with a screen-sharing function in which the entire lesson will take place. The learning material is provided by TutorABC, so there is no preparation required on your part whatsoever. You will teach Business English as well as English for everyday purposes. The payment is low but they will always provide you with many students and if you are a good teacher, you can teach for them for a very long time. Lessons are 45 minutes and the payment USD 8. However, you are paid a bonus based on the ratings you receive from the students. The bonus can vary between 50 cents and USD 3. The teaching requirements are as follows:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • TESOL/TEFL certificate (or equivalent certification).
  • 10 peak hours and weekend hrs.
  • At least one year of teaching experience.
  • Access to a computer with a reliable internet connection.

VerbalPlanet is a website where you can create your own teacher profile. The company needs to approve your profile and base their decision on your teaching experience and qualifications. Once you are approved, you can set your own rates and wait for the first students to contact you. It is recommendable to start with a lower price between 10 and 12 USD for 45 minutes in order to attract students and build up a good reputation. You can also offer discounts and a free first lesson to attract students. I was very successful with that method and I am currently teaching 10 students a week from VerbalPlanet. Students give you a rating and this rating is shown on your profile which can be accessed by potential future students. You teach through Skype and manage your contact with the student including sending homework, lesson material and invoices through Paypal. The website charges a fee of 6 dollars per class and you charge whichever fee you set. It is recommendable to stay loyal to the website as they will be able to provide you with many students. Besides, English is the world language and the number 1 sought after language when it comes to learning a foreign language so you are bound to get a lot of students.

Learnship Networks

Learnship is an E-learning company from Germany which is currently in need of English teachers to teach employees through their technologically advanced e-learning platform. Their payment is excellent compared to other e-learning companies. Standard lessons of 45 minutes are paid €13, 60 minute lessons are paid €15 and standard lessons of 90 minutes are paid €26. In order to get hired by Learnship you need to have teaching experience and preferably knowledge in a second language as well as a teaching certificate. Nevertheless, even without the teaching certificate you have a chance to be hired as long as you can show them that you have the necessary teaching experience. You will have to pass an interview before being invited to take part in a two-day training. In this training you will get to know and apply the Learnship teaching method and learn useful tips when it comes to teaching online. Subsequently, you will have to teach 2 mock lessons to a beginner and an advanced student. You will be observed during these lessons and if you manage to convince the evaluator, you will be hired and the freelance documents will be sent to you as well as a tech bundle which includes a webcam, a headset and a phone.

I haven't personally taught any students for Lingoda but I took some French and Spanish classes with them and also talked about their learning program on my YouTube channel (Learn German with Jenny). I love their content, they have very detailed PDF resources on all kinds of grammar (very helpful for the teacher as well to prepare lessons) and their classes are fun and very helpful. They teach individual students but also groups.

I am not sure how much they pay but it looks like it's between 9 and 15€ according to a Google search I did.

They require at least 2 years of teaching experience, an ESL teaching certificate, you need to be a native speaker of the language you would like to teach, you need a high-speed internet connection as well as a high-quality headset, a microphone and a camera.

Jennifer Madison (author) from Lohmar on November 27, 2013:

Some companies don't require a diploma, others require a teaching certificate or even a university degree in teaching. But all of the ones I worked for never asked me for any teaching diplomas. I had the TESOL certificate which helped me a lot regarding teaching methodology. But I taught myself all the rest and have been doing fine so far. I have an academic degree in business, so nothing to do with teaching.

Peter Kemp on November 26, 2013:

A question if I may ? What basic academic requirements were there when you applied ?

Mary Wickison from Brazil on June 30, 2013:

This is just what I needed to read. I have taught a few people here in Brazil . Most are keen to learn it. I like the idea of having a structured class. I will take a look at the sites you have suggested.
