What is the purpose of a Gantt Chart?

A Gantt Chart is a timeline chart that is used in project management to show the project’s schedule.

  • You can see individual tasks, their durations and the sequencing of these tasks.
  • You can view the overall timeline of the project and the expected completion date.
  • As the project moves forward with actual performance updated, the Gantt Chart will adjust simultaneously displaying an up-to-date project schedule with new start and finish dates for tasks and the original baseline of your plan.

View an example of a Gantt Chart below for a Residential Construction in Microsoft Project.

The Gantt Chart shows the project spans from May to December. The Foundation group is expanded to show you the Work-Breakdown Structure of this set of tasks. You can visually see the dependencies between tasks where one needs to be complete before the other starts.

Very concise explanation on a tough subject.

The etymology of the word I find interesting - Gannt chart was named after Henry L. Gantt (1861–1919), American management consultant. Often the scientific terms are really someone's name. e.Coli also comes to mind in this regard.

In our world of learning, the visual is often the best method to track a project or present data - the Gantt Chart is a great example.

While most people can envision the construction project in a Gantt Chart, perhaps expounding upon other uses such as software installation, web site launch, or even writing a book.

Gantt Charts make a great tool for communication because it is a visual view.

Great opening - correct spelling is always key but so often it is buried in content - thank you!

I believe it might be helpful whether you are trying to explain such things as why e.Coli is capitalized in strange places or why Gantt chart is spelled so contrary to our intuition by detailing the etymology behind the word. For instance, Gantt chart was named after Henry L. Gantt (1861–1919), American management consultant.

A number of scientific terms relate back to the inventor or the scientist and I love the history as much as I love the science.

Voted up - very concise explaination.
