Do you find yourself making big plans to be productive at home or at work, but by lunch time you find that you haven’t really accomplished anything at all? Perhaps this is due to your inability to properly manage your time. After all, the key to productivity is proper time management.
The good news is, hope is not lost- there are some things you can do to gain better control of your time. In this article, we’re going to provide you with 8 tips to help you improve your time management skills.
8 Time Management Tips
Understand & Acknowledge that You Have an Issue
The very first step to tackling any problem, including problems with time management, is to understand and acknowledge that the problem exists. While it’s acceptable to be late for a social engagement or even work from time to time, it’s not something that should happen all the time. If you find that you are consistently late for things or have trouble meeting deadlines at work, it’s time to understand and acknowledge that there is an issue.
Make the Conscious Decision to Change
While it is important to understand and acknowledge that there’s an issue, the desire to change is even more critical. In order to motivate yourself to change, you must set goals for yourself. They don’t have to be complicated. They can be simple goals, such as showing up for work on time or not missing project deadlines for an entire month or being on time for dinner dates with your significant other. Simple things like this that are easy to do can keep you motivated for bigger goals in the future.
Don’t Give Up
The next step is to make sure that you always stick to your goals. Let’s say your goal was to show up to work on time every day for a month and you are running late one day. This doesn’t mean that you give up and scrap your goals. Just make a note to yourself to pay more attention to the time the next day. One minor setback doesn’t mean that you have to give up on the whole thing.
Create “To-Do” Lists
One way to learn how to manage your time is to create “to do” lists. Start out by creating a big monthly “to do” list of everything that you want or need to get accomplished within the next 30 days. Then, break that down into weekly tasks and then daily tasks. When you do this, make sure to list tasks based on importance- and get the most important ones done as soon as possible. If the important tasks will take a long time, consider knocking out some of the easy tasks that are further down the list.
Consider Using Time Management Tools
If you’ve been practicing poor time management skills for some time, it can be a hard habit to break. Proper time management is not something that’s going to happen overnight- it’s going to take lots of practice and trial/error to figure out what works. Therefore, consider using time management tools, such as timers/alarms, etc. until you get into the habit.
Learn to Delegate
A lot of times, it may not be that you can’t manage your time properly- but that you take on too much. Sure, there are going to be situations where you can’t say no to a particular project at work or a task at home. However, if it’s something that someone else can handle, delegate it to them. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for help from time to time.
Get Yourself/Your Space Organized
One major key to proper time management is organization. When you’re not organized, you are likely to lose a lot of time looking for things. At work, if you don’t have an organizational system, it’s easy to lose time searching for documents that have been lost or misplaced. The same thing applies at home- if things are chaotic, you may spend a lot of unnecessary time looking for your glasses, car keys, etc. Find an organizational method that works for you and be consistent with it.
Consider Hiring Help
As we’ve already mentioned, there is nothing wrong with admitting that you need help from time to time. If you find that you are constantly getting overwhelmed with housework, consider hiring someone to help with that. If you need help with time management beyond these tips, there are companies that specialize in this- a simple internet search can help you find them.
Proper time management is the key to productivity. If you find that you’re not as productive at home or at work as you’d like to be, perhaps it’s because you’re not great with time management. Consider these tips to get better control of your time and enjoy your newfound productivity!
