Why and How to Become a Good Life and Success Coach

Nikhil is a freelance writer for a year who love sharing useful and interesting articles on various topics.

Life coaching has been evolving in the past couple of years. Many people are seeing it as their career in developing countries like India.

Businessmen and women are looking for these coaches to help them succeed in business and live a fulfilling, stress-free modern life.

Coaching has always been a special profession. When you teach, train, and inspire others about what you know well, you share your knowledge with others, which will profoundly affect society.

Coaching may look similar to teaching, but there are a couple of differences between the two.

Teaching involves helping students in academics while coaching is related to the overall growth and development of a client or person. While teaching generally happens during school and college, life coaching is for people in a job or who own a business.

Now that you have understood the meaning and difference between teaching and coaching let’s try to find out who actually is a life coach:

Who is a Life and Success Coach?

As discussed above, a life coach is more than just a teacher. He/she generally works with professionals to deal with their life problems and help them overcome them in the best possible way.

Life has many challenges in almost every stage of life.

Life and success coaches help clients tackle these challenges to become stronger and grow further in life. They are similar to psychologists and counselors.

However, instead of treating their clients medically, they treat them emotionally or physically to make their personal and professional lives easier.

How to Become a Good Life Coach?

Here is how you can become a good life coach:

  • To become a life and success coach, the first and foremost thing you need is a sensitive and positive mindset.
  • You should identify and observe people’s reactions, behavior, and personality. However, in today’s context, only having these skills may not be enough.
  • As life coaching in a sensitive profession, people want a certified coach and have adequate prior experience. Therefore, you must look to have a life coach certification to showcase your authority and experience.

How to become a Good Life Coach

  • If you want to become a good life coach, make sure you are good at teaching, motivating, observing, and reflecting others.
  • You must have these traits to train and motivate your clients to help them become the best of themselves.
  • Being a life and success coach, you must have a deep understanding of your clients rather than their problems.

Top 3 Qualities of a Life and Success Coach

Now, let’s have a look at some of the top qualities a coach should have:

1. Active Listener

Listening is probably one of the most underrated qualities of a life coach.

A good life and success coach will actively listen to all your problems and worries before suggesting a ‘plan of action.’

This is the quality that can make a difference between a normal and great life coach. And the best thing is that it cannot be taught extensively. It is something you need to learn on your own.

Being a life coach, you will have to spend most of your time listening to your clients. It doesn’t only mean hearing your clients, but actively participating and shifting all your attention and focus on them.

Sometimes, a client may hesitate to express everything that he/she is going through. At that time, it should be your responsibility to listen to their ‘unsaid words’ and try to understand their true emotions.

2. Compassionate and Empathy

One of the essential prerequisites of being a life coach is to have empathy towards all human beings.

Coaches are professional individuals who believe in personal connection with people, especially with their clients. They’re generally good at maintaining healthy relationships with people and have mutual respect.

You must try to understand your client’s issues with the utmost clarity and integrity.

Whether they’re facing any issue at the workplace, switching careers in a different industry, or just life in general, you should be able to make your clients feel confident about sharing everything with you.

3. Helping Nature

Life coaching is essentially nothing but helping people. Helping them overcome the challenges they’re facing in life or career, helping them become the best version of themselves, or helping them lead a stress-free life.

To become a great life coach, you must love to help people. The helping nature should come naturally from you, not forcefully.

Every session you take with your clients should help them move at least one step ahead than yesterday.

To start your career in life coaching, you must possess the skills mentioned above.

A life coach is someone who sincerely works for his/her clients and aims to change their lives positively. Although life coaching may not be a profession for everyone, it is a highly rewarding and unique career option for people who are can people in all aspects.

Your client’s progress should be your progress and his success should be your success!

Yes, emotional intelligence is the skill a life and success coach should have. This will enable them to assist their clients better and help them tackle various challenges in life.

Nikhil, you have mentioned it rightly. Empathy, compassion, Emotional Intelligence are now the pillars of any organization's structure.

But these traits are only valued along with the traditional IQ & skillsets.
