I love to give advice to others for free of cost. This is literary something which I can do for the whole day. Since I have over a decade of experience working in different organizations I can understand new employees pain points.
In this article, we are going to see some of the biggest career mistakes any new employee can do. But the best part is you can easily rectify them. All you need some kind of maturity to deal with such a situation.
We will not talk about whether you need to search for a new job or not. But, I am writing this article, especially for a new employee. So, let us understand them one by one.
Fear Of Networking
One of the happiest moment of life is when you will crack your first job interview. Such feelings cannot be described in words.
I clearly remember in 2005, when I got information regarding my confirmation as a trainee in RK SWAMY/BBDO Pvt. Ltd., I literary felt too good. I simply went to my college hostel and told my friends about my appointment.
Since I was new to the advertising world I did one mistake. I was not so open with others as I need some time to get adjusted. But once I got adjusted I simply build many meaningful relationships with others.
So, this is my first advice if you are joining any new company then make sure you start doing networking as soon as possible. This way, you can easily build trust and a better relationship with colleagues and boss.
Giving Up Learning
Are you a life-long learner? Do you like to observe others and learn? I am extremely good at this. I simply like to watch others and learn from their techniques and experience.
But unfortunately, I have seen many new employees they are not much interested in learning. They think once you have spent a few years in the organization they know everything. I understand that self-confidence is necessary. But more than that I have seen ego and overconfidence in them.
I have seen some new employee arguing with others instead of listening to their bosses. I know sometime boss can make your life difficult but there are many good bosses. In fact, I am still in touch with my first boss and now we are very close friends. So, instead of arguments, we should look ahead as to how we can learn more and move ahead in the career.
Just like you will not like to get salary after particular days. Same way, employers or clients don’t like to get work after deadlines. In the case of work and projects deadlines are extremely important.
As a new employee, you have to learn to manage things. Many times you need to do multiple tasks within a short period of them. And I am sure many recruiters will going to ask this particular question. In all of my interviews, I was asked whether I can handle pressure and multiple tasks and obviously, I said, yes I can.
You also need to make sure that you reach office and leave on time. Once you join new company people will be observing your behaviour and recording your timing. If you will not learn to be punctual then be ready to receive emails either from the boss or from the HR department.
There are some employees who will always work overtime. Are you one of them? Working overtime doesn’t mean you are working better or hard. Sometimes, it can mean you are not efficient in your day-to-day work.
Unfortunately, there are many projects and assignments which takes time to start and finish. If you are literary working on such kind of projects then it is fine. But learn to say no to overtime unless is really necessary. You should be in the position to say no to your clients and boss.
Once you join a new company you have to prove yourself worthy. And this you can be done even by working between 9 am to 6 pm.
The last area regarding which you should be extra careful is related to making mistakes. It is important in life to make mistakes whether in career or in life. But once you join an organization then make sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes over and over again.
Remember boss or client can forgive you once or twice. But if you will make repetitive mistakes again and again then this will not be good for your career and for your organization.
On the other hand, the best part about mistakes is it shows you are trying and learning and growing. Keep doing mistakes but also keep on learning from them. Use them as pillars and build your dream structure upon them.
In the end, I just want to say that I am sure you have definitely learned something important. How you grow in your career is entirely depends upon you. If you are doing something which you don’t like then these are indications that you need to move on. Learn something else and do something else. You shouldn’t waste your energy and time to do something which is boring as per you. Life and career should be inspiring and awesome.
