Businesses may reward employees for good work such as employees who excel in duties related to safety, quality and production. These rewards may materialize in ‘employee of the month’ rewards. These types of rewards cost nothing and motivate workers as they feel recognized for the work that they do. Simple recognition can go a long way to motivate employees.
Implementing this method is simple. Businesses may build a simple room filled with games, a dance floor, pool table, tennis table, and a quiet place to relax. The room can be adjoining to the cafeteria and close to the work space. This way employees can answer phone calls in this room without disturbing co-workers. This can really help calm the workers during their breaks and a place to let out stress which will result in a motivated workforce.
Regular company events and excursions allows an opportunity for employees, employers and their respective families to bond and have some good fun. This takes their attention away from work for a while and creates a healthy atmosphere in their minds.
Businesses should encourage that employees attend seminars and workshops. These seminars may offer a large range of activities from meditation techniques to business acquisitions to skill improvements. Employees are motivated by self-development.
Businesses can provide a complimentary lunch for their employees. This will allow employers to control the length of their lunch breaks as well as provide an incentive to employees to discuss business related issues in an open environment.
Employee Family Interactions
Businesses can display recognition to the family members of employees for achievements they have attained in other aspects of their life. An example could be announcing the graduation of an employee’s son from college.
Businesses can offer promotions and discounts to employees regarding business related products. An example is Walmart giving their workers a 50% discount on certain products such as cereals.
Encouraging Social Work
Businesses can co-ordinate and supply an opportunity for their workers to participate in social activities such as feeding the hungry every month. This makes employees feel good about themselves and the culture of the business that they work for.
Businesses should allow space for employees to work in their own time within bounds of course. A good example is working mothers often need to fetch children from school and cook for their families thus business could allow them to take work home to complete when they are free.
Businesses can give small gifts such as pots or watches to employees on special occasions such as birthdays and weddings etc. This way employees are aware that their employers care about them and consider their feelings. This will motivate workers to perform and achieve better results.
Businesses may communicate changes in their business such as a new construction in the building or a new board member coming into the business. They can send this information to all their employees by email or phone etc. even if the decisions are not directly related to each employee. This makes employees feel like a part of a family and part of something bigger.
Employers can request employees to offer their suggestions on topics regarding production, services, products and packaging. Often employees are closer to the customers and understand their needs whereas the employers do not have personal relations with their customers. These suggestions can be offered during brainstorming sessions, team meetings and suggestion boxes. This way employers can get the best and most informed advice pertaining to their clients and raises the morale of the employees as well. It is a win-win situation.
A work environment that is warm, enjoyable and free is a key aspect to building motivation and encouraging success. An environment that encourages individuality is a unique aspect that has proven to be very successful, however many businesses do not implement it. A perfect example of a business that does implement it is Ideo, a design firm, based in Palo Alto, California. Their emphasis on individuality has gained them large success in recent years.
We have previously discussed the ‘employee of the month’ recognition however it often means a lot to employees to hear verbal recognition every now and again. A simple ‘good job’ from a co-worker or employer can have a huge impact on an employee. This enforces continuous motivation and improves results.
Help Employees Learn
The more talented employees often become mentally bored with their work. These types of people require mental stimulation. Their minds need to be challenged and exposed to new theories. Businesses should supply these employees with training materials, access to experienced mentors, and opportunity to take advanced skills courses. This benefits the business by gaining innovative ideas to grow and motivates the employees at the same time.
Businesses should grant responsibility to their mature employees. This raises the confidence levels and motivation levels of employees, whilst giving the more senior members less work to do so that they can concentrate on more pressing matters within the business.
By considering all of the above I can conclude that there is an abundance of manners in which businesses can address the lack of motivation within the workforce without constantly offering financial incentives such as raises, promotions, and bonuses etc. Sometimes it is the simple and cheap methods that have a larger impact on motivation.
