14 Gifts Ideas for Truck Drivers

What do truck drivers want as gifts? I had the same question, so I consulted a close friend who spent many years as a truck driver.

He came up with a list of 14 great gifts a driver would use and appreciate during their time on the road. Since then, I've added a few more gift ideas recommended by other truck drivers. Enjoy!

1. CB Radio

Fun Facts About Trucking

  • In the USA, truck drivers can drive only 11 hours, and must rest for a period of 10 hours.
  • Truck drivers are responsible for inspecting their trucks and keeping them in working order.
  • Truck drivers are known as "lorry drivers" in Ireland and "truckies" in Australia.
  • Many large trucking companies in the USA pay drivers according to "short miles," meaning the distance between two cities if you were going from point A to point B on foot, not on the highway.

3. Wooden Tire Thumper

4. GPS Device

5. Ionizer

6. Nap Zapper

Are You a Truck Driver?

I made this page to honor America's unsung heroes, the truck drivers that spend weeks on the road delivering our mail, the products we buy, and industrial purchases.

America relies on truck drivers who are willing to give up huge parts of their lives to keep things moving.

Without them, America wouldn't be America.

Your comments are welcome as always.

@Brite-Ideas - the ear-zapper thing was a suggestion from one of the readers of this page. I looked at several models and researched reviews; it appears that half the people love them and the other half won't use them! Mixed reviews... but I thought it was worth mentioning as it is a low cost item - less than ten dollars.

Barbara Tremblay Cipak from Toronto, Canada on September 14, 2014:

Fabulous suggestions here - there are quite a few people I know in my family who would fit this category of gift giving (well years ago that is) - you've really thought this through and given some great ideas - the ear zapper thingy..very smart indeed!

Linda Jo Martin (author) from Post Falls, Idaho, USA on September 13, 2014:

@Mary Crowther - like you, I didn't have a clue what might be needed, at first. For example, I would never have thought of a transformer/inverter if my friend hadn't mentioned it in his list. And many other items... I wouldn't have thought of ... but then my readers mentioned them to me.

Linda Jo Martin (author) from Post Falls, Idaho, USA on September 13, 2014:

@ecogranny - Let's hope we don't need computers in heaven! But if there are any, I hope I get one. I'd probably miss my computer a lot at first since it is something I use every day.

Linda Jo Martin (author) from Post Falls, Idaho, USA on September 13, 2014:

Thanks, Paula... the truckers have a unique lifestyle... working constantly for weeks on end, living in a tiny cab.

Paula Atwell from Cleveland, OH on September 13, 2014:

I don't know any truckers, but loved this list. :)

Kathryn Grace from San Francisco on September 13, 2014:

My dad was a truck driver for many years--his second career. I'm sure some of the items you've listed on this page would have suited him well on the road. I had to answer "not sure" on that lap top question because I don't know if he needs or has one in that great truck stop in the sky.

Mary Crowther from Havre de Grace on September 13, 2014:

Great ideas! I would not have had any idea what to buy. Thanks for sharing!

Great idea

My brother drives a truck, and I think his favorite gift ever was satellite radio.

anonymous on May 27, 2013:

Good list, but I second Capt. Chaos. The Sirius/XM radio is awesome. And the DriveAir 3 stage filter. Much better then the little ionizers. : )

anonymous on May 14, 2013:

@anonymous: The Rand is a trucking model GPS, the best out there the 720 is the truck GPS KING

rashmiagr06 on May 01, 2013:

gifts..truck Driver..ooooo...

anonymous on January 12, 2013:

You missed an awesome gadget in your list. As a commercial OTR driver, I absolutely cannot live without my Sirius/XM radio receiver. Killer gift for a driver

anonymous on January 07, 2013:

I would give anything to have my health back, so I could be trucking again...after 20 yrs on the road, kidney failure brought me to a fast stop...that's what I have wanted for the last 5 yrs...thank you

chas65 on December 20, 2012:

Love your selection of movies. I had never heard about the ionizer before, that was an interesting concept to stay awake. Many of us could use one of those on long trips.

anonymous on December 18, 2012:

@anonymous: Hi Meg! Absolutely yes. My husband and I drive team and audiobooks are our best friends. You can't always get reception for radio. We prefer the unabridged versions which are more expensive but the abridged leave out too much of the story. Merry Christmas!

anonymous on December 17, 2012:

I have been a driver for 2 years and I really like the audio books . They have a lot of different ones that are inexpensive. Also I have enjoyed my satellite radio its nice to have a radio at anytime instead of channel checking or no stations at all.

anonymous on December 17, 2012:

This list is pretty good BUT, the TV and refrigerator should be 12 volt models so they can be plugged into a cigarette lighter. Otherwise, they aren't of much use without a DC to AC inverter. Also, the GPS should be a trucking model, considering that trucks have to consider bridge clearances, bridge weights, and truck routes.

mandoubt on December 14, 2012:

Great List!

I know a truck driver and this list is a blessing. Thank you very much!

Would a Trucker like any audio books? I thought if I were a trucker I would like one.

Where can I get a microwave 15 in width for a 2008 freightliner cascadia???

Linda Jo Martin (author) from Post Falls, Idaho, USA on October 10, 2012:

@anonymous: A tablet sounds good, but an iphone... wow. I think he'd really like that. A Kindle only if he likes to read a lot in his spare time.

anonymous on October 10, 2012:

Help!

My dad is a truck driver and his birthday is coming soon, but I am undecided between a kindle, tablet or an i-phone??

Linda Jo Martin (author) from Post Falls, Idaho, USA on October 04, 2012:

@mrducksmrnot: Thanks for the suggestions! I totally agree about the self-inflating air mattress. As hard as these truckers work, they deserve a bit of extra comfort... when they sleep.

mrducksmrnot on October 04, 2012:

I'm not a truck driver but know several and all of these are great gifts. Make sure the GPS is loaded for Tractor Trailers. New laws now in effect won't allow trucker's to be on their phone's anymore while driving but they still need one for when they stop. Another idea is an Air Mattress for the sleeper (self inflating with batteries).

Linda Jo Martin (author) from Post Falls, Idaho, USA on September 15, 2012:

@anonymous: Very awesome! I will try to find one to include it on this list when I revise it, which will be soon.

@anonymous: Some truck drivers are computer addicted and must have their online connectivity. Others can do without. For the record, if I were a truck driver, my laptop would go with me. I've never owned an iPad.

anonymous on June 22, 2012:

@CuriousCookie LM: i am also a new truck driver, i saw many drivers using laptop or i pad , really i don't know what is the purpose for this one in truck drivers. i am going with one old guy , he doesn't know anything about this can you please explain this matter .joemonmathew101@gmail.com

An iPad with GPS is a GREAT idea...the iPad battery lasts a long time, perfect for pit-stop entertainment. Thanks for the ideas :)

There are trucker-specific GPS units available with truck routes, weigh-limited bridges, low overpass and a ton of other info including tracking state-by-state mileage and other stuff truckers need. I got a Rand McNally unit that works great.

davenjilli lm on March 15, 2012:

very astute gift ideas!

anonymous on March 04, 2012:

The only problem with that GPS is it sounds like might not be trucker-oriented. There are GPS models on the market which include details about low-bridge clearances and special Truck Routes.

CuriousCookie LM on January 02, 2012:

What a great lense, thanks for sharing. My fiancé is a OTR truck driver and I have been with him full time for 8 years. Besides our mini fridge we have a cooler and I couldn't live without my slow cooker. I've also been wanting to get an ereader. Great gift ideas for any truck driver or RV'er or even anyone that travels often.

CuriousCookie LM on January 02, 2012:

I totally agree with your friend, my fiancé is a truck driver and I've been on the road with him full time for years. The items your friend listed are all great items, I've also been thinking about getting an e reader. And along with our mini fridge we also have a cooler that plugs into our cigarette lighter and I use a slow cooker to cook some homemade meals. This was a great lense, Thanks for sharing it.

Medicinemanwriting1 on December 26, 2011:

As a ten year truck driver, I have to agree with your friend. Every item listed, is considered a must have for long haul truck drivers. It get mighty boring out there, and it sure is nice to have those amenities when you need one. Great lens, and a very ingenious idea to write about. Thanks.

HemorrhoidsOnline on July 07, 2011:

For long trips don't forget seat cushions to prevent hemorrhoids. Troy was a GREAT call on a DVD! Ionizers do work to keep a driver more refreshed. I'm not a truck driver, but get emails from people that do long haul trucking.
