What is the best selling car in India then?
It could be this one, Maruti Alto 800 from Suzuki. It has and continues to be India's best selling car since around 2004. Figures would suggest it sold over 1.5 million in 2020. The question posed at the beginning should perhaps be reworded to Which is The Best Selling Manufacturer in India?
It would appear that Suzuki's cars take up the top 5 best seller slots on a regular basis ! I know I found that pretty astounding too.
Why not come with me on a journey to find out what are the benefits of owning a Maruti Alto 800 and why it is such a popular little car.
Why so popular?
Well it obviously isn't down to the fact that it has lots of street cred with it's little 800 cc, 3 cylinder engine. It does boast that it has 5 seats though. By India standards it's a compact economical little workhorse. 25% cleaner running than before. Not the most fuel efficient though I am led to believe.
Maruti Alto 800 review.
Have a look if you haven't already at the video within this article. It's short and to the point but gives you a good idea what this car is all about.
A sense of pride every time you drive.
Nice slogan - A Sense of Pride Every time You Drive. This is what you will see on the advertising material from the Suzuki company. They also say it's not easy being the most driven car in India. The population of India must agree because it has been the most popular car for around 20 years. Not many motor companies can boast that.

Is cheap the best option?
Is going cheap really the best option when buying a car?
What are the things you must consider when going for the cheapest option?
Parts availability and price.
Being such a popular car model means that parts will be readily available if you choose to keep the car for a few years. Popularity also means that parts prices will be really competitive so you should be able to seek out some good bargains when it comes round to service or repair time.
Do you own one or will you buy one now?
Do you already own a Maruti Alto 800 or do you intend to buy one in the future? I would be interested to know what you think of your little car and why you continue to buy them. Obviously there are millions of satisfied customers in India so it would be good to hear why this funky little car is so popular.

Maruti Alto 800 owners survey.
Let's look at the specifications.
For a cheap little car it doesn't do bad in terms of specifications. Just look at the impressive list of standard features below.
- 800 cc, 3 cylinder engine
- Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
- Drivers air bag
- Reverse parking sensors
- Speed limit warning
- Seat belt warning
Considering there are 5 variants to this model the entry level is pretty damn good if you ask me. For slightly more money a significant upgrade in spec can be seen.
What might be deemed as necessary features in a modern car you can get options like,
- Power steering
- Electric windows
- Air conditioning
The next level would be that of the LXI and boasts all of the features listed above for not that much more money and is probably where you would want to start if this is your first purchase of the Maruti Alto 800.
Go up even further to the VXI and you would qualify for,
- Remote key entry
- Central locking
- 12v electric socket
- Rear parcel shelf
- 2 speakers in front
If the thought of driving a manual version fills you with horror you can upgrade even further to a nifty Automatic version which is a whole lot more refined. So with KM10 version you get bigger engine, wider tyres for a more pleasing ride as well as front fog lights.
New model due June 2021?
Information would suggest there might be a new updated model due out around the month of June 2021. If you're looking to buy new in 2021 then it could be a good idea to hang on until summer to see what the next generation of Maruti Alto 800 will be like.
What's the verdict?
If you're looking for a small and compact City car the Maruti Alto 800 fits the bill. It is the smallest most fuel efficient in it's class in India, although it does have some stiff competition from cars like the Renault Kwid and Datsun Redi-Go. Don't forget it is a well proven and reliable 800 cc engine which is standing the test of time it would seem.
If small is what you are looking for then stick with the Alto 800.
