What Do You Need to Make Mad Max's V8 Interceptor

I can't blame you for wanting a V8 Interceptor. Me wanting one is practically the force that keeps me breathing. Mad Max have many fans in the range of movie-buffs, post apocalypse enthusiast and car-guys among others.

Keep in mind that this being a movie car, the things modified are the things you see. You may have it running on nitro or be the fastest car on the block, but those are things usually done in the movie's editing-room.

What you do need to do however:

  • Body - Nosecone, hood, two spoilers and fender flares, plus refit fenders.
  • Hidden square headlights
  • Supercharger and switch on shifter
  • off-road steel rims
  • Exhaust
  • Black paint
  • MFP-details

Being the famous movie car that the V8 Interceptor is, there is people out there that makes replicas for a living. So you could actually buy everything pre-made. Or you could make them yourself.


The project car to start with

To start this wonderful project, look for an ADM (Australian Domestic Market) Ford Falcon XB coupé from 1973. The Ford Falcon is one of the more cheaper classic Ford due to the volume produced and not being a Mustang. It was mainly manufactured in USA, but variants was being made in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile and Mexico. And the Aussie must have loved it as they pushed the model all the way in 2016.

The spark for the imagination

The original car was built and owned by Murray Smith who fashioned it with an aftermarket front-end in glass-fiber privately.

That front was originally designed by Peter Arcadipane for a 1977 Falcon Panel Van Concept car.

The producer liked the design and the cyberpunk vibe, so it stayed on. And with the dystopian feel of the movie and makeshift car parts it worked quite well.

Engine and transmission

The engine used in the car is a 351 Cleveland 4V CJ engine (Q-code). That is a part of Ford's 335 engine series of V8's. They could range with 302, 351 and 400 cubic-inches in displacement, but every engine had a bore of 4 inch. The good thing with the Cleveland engine is the high-compression and massive canals for both intake and exhaust.

It was a great engine for racing, but was discontinuing in 1974 due to limitation in emission. And this CJ-engine (Cobra Jet) was their last try to meet the harder standards. It got lowered in compression and the cam-timing got retarded with 4 degree.

Original carburetor for the performance alternative was a 750-CFM spread-bore 4300-D Motorcraft carburetor.

And the 351C 4V CJ was only delivered with a 4-speed manual transmission with a floor-shift.


The supercharger is what makes the V8 Interceptor so iconic and unique. What used in the movie is a Weiand supercharger with a Scott Super Slot Intake kit and a metal scoop. The intake used in the movie were never functional. But due to high popularity, you could nowadays buy a functional kit including the scoop, authorized by Mel Scott Himself.

And everything is supposed to be available by the pull of a switch on the shifter.

Some DIY makers make a fake supercharger with the belt on an idle roller and an electric motor inside the supercharger. But if you go with the screen accurate alternative, you go with a real supercharger housing with a belt going to an electro-magnetic pulley on the crankshaft. That way will the supercharger run at the same RPM as the engine.

And for the switch, any pull-switch with the same size should do the job. Paint the knob red if it isn't already colored. And some basic pipe-clamp and other basic hardware could be the bracket.


The body

The whole look of the car lays in that front. If you know what you are doing with fiberglass, it shouldn't be too hard to make yourself. Or go one step further and make them in steel. But anyway, basic body-sculpting skills should got you covered.

  • Nosecone - wedge-shaped above the bumper and flat under. In front of each headlights are plexiglas covers with horizontal bars. Between the headlights are two nostrils. Under the bumper are two universal rectangular fog-lights. Between the fog-lights are two thin slots and one wide slot. Imagine the complete front as a mix of Nissan Skyline GT-R and Saab EV1, with some modifications.
  • Hood - Imagine the standard hood with the raised T-shape with vents in the bottom of the horizontal part, but a hole is cut open for the supercharger.
  • Fenders and flares - Basic. The fenders are to compliment the nosecone and the flares is to widen the body.
  • The rest of the body - It is more to complete the look. Side skirt and back-end are actually stock. Only thing modified is the two spoilers. One at the trunk lid and one of the back-end of the roof.


To really complete the exterior look you need the right wheels.

The rims used in the movies are steel Sunraysia, but I can't find any similar with the right dimension. So I tried to find some Ford OEM rims, but no luck there either. Luckily, you can find some custom-made rims plus tire at the link attached to the image above.

But if you don't fancy those, you could always try to find some others. The rims have to be black, 8-spoke and deep-dish. The tire have a stock looking wide sidewall, and the fitment look stock too. And after looking at some picture I would go for 14" rims. And then the size for the rims should be 7Jx14 ET0 with 5x114.3 PCD and 70.3 center bore. And the tire size is 205/60R14.

This one was quite tricky to find something about. But you can clearly see eight exhaust tip is facing upward from the rear side in front of the rear wheels, four on each side.

And the V8 Interceptor is obviously fitted with a V8, so one tailpipe per cylinder. But as the tailpipes are so far back, I doubt that there are eight individual pipes running under the car with no headers.

Then finally, I found just the right picture (above). As the tailpipes are two 4-way splitters, it confirm that only two pipes from each bank distributes the exhaust.



The V8 Interceptor is clearly black, but if you go to a paint-shop, that is not enough. You need a color-code. And the black OEM color for a Ford Falcon XB is B/Y426 and is called Onyx Black. Also, all the chrome is painted.

The last bits

Interior - The interior is probably the easiest part. It's a stock black leather interior with some police knickknacks (siren, radio, control box...). And you can find everything online if you look around.

Decals - The car is mainly plain, but a golden MFP-police-badge decal is placed on the front fenders just behind the wheel.
