History of the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile

Different angles of the Wienermobile and a Hotdogger who was kind enough to pose for me.

Oh I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener...

Many of us have sung the Oscar Mayer jingle quite a few times. Maybe over hundreds of times. There is something about the song that sticks in your head and makes us smile.

The jingle brings back wonderful memories from our past. Whether at picnics with friends, family cook-outs or school lunches with fellow classmates, hot dogs were usually part of the meal.

Or, possibly you are making new memories with your kids or grandchildren. Or, possibly you are still and always will be a kid at heart. I fall into all of the categories.

When is the last time you sang the jingle? How about a sing-a-long now?

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener,
that is what I'd truly like to be,

'cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener,
everyone would be in love with me.

I finally had a chance to see the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile and this is my tribute to the memorable moment.

My story about the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile

I read a post on Facebook by the East Orlando Post that stated the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was coming to town on April 11, 2013. I had never seen the wienermobile and I was excited to finally be able to get a wiener whistle.

My husband, Dave had seen the wienermobile once, in the 60's, but times had changed since then. The wienermobile went through seven upgrades since he last saw one. He also no longer had his wiener whistle and he missed his.

My plan was to surprise him. We have an Oscar Mayer history and we needed to see the wienermobile together.

We got our free Oscar Mayer wienermobile wiener whistles and stickers!

We got our free Oscar Mayer wienermobile wiener whistles and stickers!

Free whistles and stickers for kids of all ages

Free whistles and stickers for kids of all ages

On Thursday morning I told him I needed to stop by Walmart. He was stunned! "Walmart?" Mind you, I'm not a Walmart shopper so that was surprise number one. He said, "let's do it." We were waiting on the light to turn green so we could turn into the parking lot, when he yelled, "I think I just saw the wienermobile!" I told him he was hallucinating. Boys will be boys.

We began to proceed into the turn lane, entered the parking lot and his illusion became a reality when the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was directly in front of us. He was beaming. He's 62 years old. Like my title says "the wienermobile is fun for kids of all ages."

We had a fun tour of the car. We spoke with the hotdoggers. One was from Wisconsin and she didn't care for Florida's humidity. The other hotdogger was from New York. They were all smiles, cheers and very pleasant. We retrieved our whistles and stickers.

My husband then said what I hoped he wouldn't...the Oscar Mayer jingle was our wedding song. Oh my. I should have said, let's keep that our secret. I forgot to mention that. The hotdoggers were all ears. There was a photographer from a local newspaper who was also all ears.

So the story goes...Many years ago Dave worked for the meat department at our local Winn Dixie grocer. I happened to be looking for a part time job. I mentioned it to Karen, a friend of mine who worked there. She mentioned it to Dave. He said I need a lunchmeat girl. Linda would be perfect. Hence, I became the Oscar Mayer lunchmeat girl. Years later when we were married the Oscar Mayer jingle was one of our wedding songs. Our story was appreciated by the crowd.

This is why seeing the wienermobile together was even more special. It was a visit to Walmart we will always remember that didn't involve a freak show.

You don't get many chances to see the Oscar Mayer wienermobile, so if this historical auto ever comes to town, go see it and retrieve your whistle. Who knows maybe one day you'll hear the Oscar Mayer jingle at a wedding reception. Chances are slim, but you never know.

Good question and idea Kindoak!!

Great seeing all of the comments and fun memories of the Wienermobile! Check out the new online retail store of officially-licensed "Wienermobile Swag" at OhIWish.com. Lots of cool stuff, plus you get a Free Wiener whistle with every order!

kindoak on September 17, 2014:

Fantastic branding idea and good to see it has kept it's wonderful wieneristic design through the ages. Has this been tested in a proper wind tunnel? What if car makers discovered the bulbous design has hidden aerodynamic benefits offering more miles per gallon... Just imagine, one day all cars might look like this!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on September 17, 2014:

Hey y'all...Thanks for stopping by to visit the Oscar Mayer wienermobile! :)

justholidays on September 17, 2014:

I had no idea such an automobile would exist but now that I know, I'd like to have a ride and I also want a... whistle!

Ann Hinds from So Cal on September 17, 2014:

Do you know that it is possible to make a U-turn on Las Vegas Blvd. in Las Vegas, Nevada, (through the traffic) to get to the Weinermobile? Who cares that everyone is honking and making rude gestures? We just had to have our weiner whistle. We took friends to Vegas because they had never been there and to this day, the highlight of the trip was the Weinermobile and the whistle. Really enjoyed this, brought back wonderful memories.

Paula Atwell from Cleveland, OH on September 17, 2014:

Your wedding song, huh? That's pretty darned funny. I haven't seen this vehicle in person but I remember the commercials. :)

Nithya Venkat from Dubai on May 18, 2014:

I have never heard about the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile. Enjoyed the read. It must have been great reliving fond memories once again!!

Audrey Hunt from Idyllwild Ca. on May 15, 2014:

Came back again to live those Oscar Meyer Weinermobile memories. What fun!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on May 15, 2014:

Haha!! You ROCK, SFAM!!

Suzie from Carson City on May 15, 2014:

Let me be FRANK.....you are a writer to RELISH....but right now, I have to let my DOG out and then ROLL into bed to KETCHUP on some sleep!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on May 15, 2014:

Hi Audrey! Great minds thinking alike! :)

Audrey Howitt from California on May 15, 2014:

I was just talking to a friend about this the other day!! Loved it--and love your hub!

Aladino on July 29, 2013:

Dude, I rode in the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile once. My cousin got a job drinivg it for six months. As far as I know there are multiple Weinermobiles troving the country celebrating the delicious-ness of Oscar Mayer weiners. Each team of Weinermobile drivers is in charge of marketing Oscar Mayer to a specific part of the country. I guess York was just on the list of stops.

Carly Sullens from St. Louis, Missouri on June 22, 2013:

Oh Linda, I love this! Maybe one day the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile can drive around AP, in Orlando.

Suzie from Carson City on May 30, 2013:

Wow!! I'll bet the driver of that crazy vehicle can sure cut the mustard!

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on May 30, 2013:

I love this ve-hicle! I want to ride in it! The only similar type I have seen over here was a huge Jaffa orange with wheels at my local shopping centre when I was a kid - it does not compare with this though, brilliant!

Mohan Kumar from UK on May 29, 2013:

Just looking at the title and the pic made me grin with Joy. What an absolute blast- nuggets of history about the Wienermobile to boot! this is brilliant.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on May 18, 2013:

Hi Nell, At our wedding reception...yep, we did. We still have the music CD, just not sure where we placed it for safe keeping. Haha!

A sausage, weiner, hot dog...all the same old thing! :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on May 18, 2013:

I agree Michelle! Even though the nitrites in hot dogs are unhealthy, I will continue to enjoy them...in moderation.

Nell Rose from England on May 17, 2013:

Have a great weekend Linda!

Nell Rose from England on May 17, 2013:

Well who would have thought it? lol! you never fail to surprise me! at your wedding? great story, and to be honest I had never heard of it before, or saw that great vehicle! mind you, we don't call them wieners over here, just plain old sausages! lol!

Michelle Liew from Singapore on May 12, 2013:

For the love of a good hot dog!!! Delicioso, and thanks for sharing!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 30, 2013:

Thanks for your comment diva! ;)

That's a great idea Sherry! The wiener whistle rocks!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 30, 2013:

Denise, My daughter reacted the same way until she saw my photos and then realized it would be fun to see the Wienermobile. My granddaughter was in school, she missed it. She also still wants my whistle. I gave her the sticker :)

Sherry Hewins from Sierra Foothills, CA on April 30, 2013:

What a fun hub! I've seen the Wienermobile a couple of times, I never thought to stop and get a tour though. If I ever run across it again I'll have to stop and get a whistle.

Kalpana Iyer from India on April 29, 2013:

This is an interesting piece of info. Never knew such a thing existed! Hearing about the Wienermobile for the first time. Your story is super cute too. Voted up!

Denise Handlon from North Carolina on April 29, 2013:

What? ! Billybuc didn't know that the Wienermobile existed? How could he have missed that one??? lol

I LOVED this hub for the following reasons: 1. funny 2. interesting 3. memories of when my husband and I saw the W.M. parked near a Coney Island promoting the restaurant. I was as excited as your husband and my dearly departed guy was very tolerant of any of my shenanigans. He took pictures of me standing near the giant wiener, and we did tour the inside, also. It was so much fun. Of course, we did get our whistles and stickers. When I later reported this exciting news to my teenage daughters and offered to take them back there they quickly declined and counted their blessings they had not been subjected to their mother's crazy and embarrassing behavior, (in public, mind you!).

Many years later, that same youngest daughter, now married with two young kids of her own, saw the Wienermobile with her family, got the whistles, stickers and postcard and I occasionally tease her about it.

Funny how age has a way of changing our perspective and allowing us to relax and have fun.

UP/Funny and Interesting and sharing. lol

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 26, 2013:

Thanks for stopping by to visit the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile Dianna and Dilip.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 26, 2013:

Hi Glimmer, I still would have went for the whistle alone. This weinermobile doesn't serve hot dogs, just treats :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 26, 2013:

Audrey, I'm glad this story brought back pleasant memories for you.

Dilip Chandra from India on April 22, 2013:

Dianna Mendez on April 21, 2013:

I have seen this vehicle around and about, it is exciting! You both looks so sweet in the pic with the wienermobile. Glad you had a good time. THanks for the reminder of how much fun it is to catch one of these rare moments.

Claudia Mitchell on April 21, 2013:

Ha - This put a smile on my face this evening. I saw this once in a parade, but since hot dogs are one of my least favorite foods on earth I took a pass. My husband, on the other hand, grabbed my daughter and off they went to get their whistles!

Audrey Howitt from California on April 13, 2013:

Wow this brings back memories!!! I loved the song and the wienermobile and the ot dogs!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 13, 2013:

Hi Mary, I'm glad you enjoyed the hub and videos. I hope you also get a chance to see the wienermobile! Be sure and check their schedule, they are in FL now. Thanks!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 13, 2013:

drbj, I shared this hub with Oscar Mayer so time will tell if they'll appreciate the jingle news! ;)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 13, 2013:

Hi Alecia, I'm betting you are correct and not many people have the Oscar Mayer jingle as a wedding song. Haha! I hope you get your wiener whistle!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 13, 2013:

Mommy Needs a Nap, The inside was cool. It has six comfy seats and plenty of leg room. I hope you get to sit in the mobile one day.

Mary Hyatt from Florida on April 13, 2013:

What a fun Hub! I'd sure like to see the Wiernermobile. I doubt it they would ever come to a little town like the one I live in, though!

So nice that you and Dave got to see it!

Great photos and videos, too.

Voted UP, and will share.

drbj and sherry from south Florida on April 13, 2013:

Thanks for all this great Oscar Meyer hot dog trivia, Susan. So the song was played at your wedding? How intriguing and what fun! Do the Oscar Meyer folks know about your hot dog connection? Send them an explanatory letter and maybe they will send you hot dogs ... for life!

Alecia Murphy from Wilmington, North Carolina on April 13, 2013:

It's so sweet that was your wedding song! At least you know no one else has possibly had it.

I think I've passed the wienermobile but never had a chance to see it. I'd love to see it. Oscar Meyer hot dogs are my favorite and they remind me of summer cookouts and parties.

Fun hub!

Michelle Clairday from Arkansas on April 13, 2013:

Great job! I guess we are twice in a lifetime people. We passed it going to a nearby city for a zoo trip then passed it on the return trip that afternoon. Wish we could have seen inside it. Thanks for the pictures and facts.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 13, 2013:

Fay, I could so relate! My kids think I'm nuts also, but my grandkids love when I sing the songs. Keep on singing! ;)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 13, 2013:

Daisy, I could imagine a possible accident happening when drivers spot the wienermobile. There are just a few accidents reported that involved these cars. Luckily! Thanks for your comment.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 13, 2013:

Hi Cat, I'm glad you enjoyed this hub. It's not everyday we hear about the wienermobile. I'm glad we had the chance to see one up close. Thanks!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 12, 2013:

How cool is that Mary that you still have the Hotwheels Wienermobiles. I've seen them a few times over the years either by having them or at yard sales. I don't have them anymore, but we got our wiener whistle! :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 12, 2013:

Vicki, I think it's Oscar Mayer's way of giving college seniors a treat for all the years they put into going to school! Haha! Reps tour the campuses each year and interview thousands of applicants, only a select few make the cut. What a cool way to travel and get paid for it!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 12, 2013:

Thanks for your comments ... dwachira, Imkarn (I hope you get that ride soon! Ha!) and LoveDoc, the wienermobile just might be making a stop near you soon, be sure and check their schedule. The Hotdoggers might be heading south! :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 12, 2013:

Hi SAA, Yes...we had fun! I don't think there is a wienermobile in South Africa. You'd have to contact Oscar Mayer to request one :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 12, 2013:

I think so too Shauna! There are a few hubbers who live around us and many more who live in FL, I should plan something...I'll keep you posted.

Mary Craig from New York on April 12, 2013:

Wedding songs are supposed to remind you and you have the weinermobile 'there to remind you'...I have the two Hot Wheels wienermobiles from my boys.

So glad you two love birds got to see the dog!

Voted up, funny, and interesting.

Victoria Lynn from Arkansas, USA on April 12, 2013:

What a fun hub! I wonder why only college seniors get the driving job? It's neat that the jingle was one of your weddings songs. What a special and unique memory. Thanks for including the commercials. I had never seen the one from 1965 and really enjoyed it. I lived during the 1973 one, and the little boy reminds me of one of my younger brothers at that age. So cute! Loved this hub. All the votes!!
