Should We Adopt Automated Cars?

Ian is a car expert, he have worked in automotive industry for 3 years. Pros and cons of automotive cars.

Advancement of technology in the transport industry has led to many innovations from ordinary vehicles to electric cars, and now we are on the verge of bringing automated cars. Automated vehicles can well be described as driverless cars. They sense the environment around it and navigates without human interference. In this paper, I will be looking into the benefits and opposing sides of adopting the automated cars and finally analyzing the results to identify whether the costs outweigh the benefits.

Will the Benefits of Adopting Autonomous Vehicles Outweigh Their Costs?

For there to be a clear finding of the question, a precise analysis of the benefits and disadvantages of autonomous vehicles needs to be identified.

Accident reduction

94% of the fatal accident has always been attributed to human error and negligence; the autonomous vehicles use modern technology to reduce deaths and injuries in our roads. This is because self-drive cars have that potentiality, especially the distracted driver's injuries and fatalities. The traffic deaths are projected to be reduced by 90% if the automated car technology is adopted.

Reduced traffic congestion

The computerized cars have a chance to reduce the traffic by a substantial margin. When these vehicles are carefully controlled, they are likely to stop the vice of human driving of going and stopping everywhere. This is because such cars will only stop to the right destination where they are going. Human driving has got so many distractions, which ranges from lane changing, bottlenecks amongst others. The automated cars will be able to smoothen the traffic flow of all the vehicles. Traffic congestion reduction is linked to accident reduction as these two factors happen concurrently.

There will be carbon IV oxide emission reduction.

The autonomous cars are likely to reduce carbon emissions as they will lead to less or no pollution. This is an essential aspect of these cars as there will be a reduction in global warming and depletion of the ozone substances. This, in the long run, will address the issue of climate change, which has been a challenge for quite a several years. There will be an added advantage as there will be no unpredictable weather conditions, causing massive destruction and loss of lives.

There will be a lane capacity to increase

These cars will potentially increase highway capacity by a very high margin and increase travel speeds by more than 20 %. The autonomous vehicles and the automated train can carry a large number of both people and cargo. This will raise the power even further. AVs will not only lead to overall increased vehicle travel, but they will also increase and support higher rates on the throughput of the existing roads.

They will lower fuel consumption rate

AVs cars can improve fuel consumption rates, thus improving the fuel economy globally. The vehicles will also cause improvements in reducing distances between cars and increasing roadway capacity. The automated trains are positioned to lower peak speeds that improve the economy in fuel and improve travel time through higher sufficient speeds. Even a small percentage of autonomous vehicles on the road can reduce the fuel consumption rate.

Last-mile service advantage

The autonomous vehicles are very well positioned to provide both the first and the last mile service connectivity to the travelers who use the public means.

The large cities in the world have had the problem of provision commuters with adequate public transport. This is because such cities lack the proper infrastructure that meets the needs of all travelers. When the self- drive cars enter into force, they will partially solve this problem.

AVs can cause a breakthrough in the public sector, solving the first mile and the last mile connectivity.

Transportation accessibility

The current mode of transport leaves people with disabilities out. Significantly, the blind, the deaf, and the physically challenged this is because they cannot drive themselves. The automated vehicles will be accessible even to these groups of people as it will be very safe for them to use them as their mode of transport. Self-driving cars will be beneficial to commuters, especially those who want to reach to work on time, going upcountry to see their relatives, and those who are sick and are seeking immediate doctor's intervention for their lives to be saved. These AVs types will as well favor the aging population.

AVs will cause positive industrial changes.

The mining and the farming industries have opted to shift to autonomous vehicle usage. This is because this technology is more affordable in the long run. Such vehicles can operate in high risks roads and circumstances without necessarily exposing the driver to such risks. This helps increase the safety of workers, especially in the high-risk environment.

Reduction in travel time and cost of transportation

The AVs have the potentiality of reducing the hours that are lost in a traffic jam by a considerable margin. This is almost 80 billion hours that will be recovered by this technology. The fuel consumption will as well be cut, and this, in the long run, will make the cost of transportation to be affordable. This is because the fuel cost is directly proportional to the cost of transportation. There will be an as well reduction in human resources. This is because cars will be self-driven.

AVs will promote efficiency in parking.

AVs are helpful as they will remove unnecessary demands for parking. In the current transport sector, there is always the urge of drivers to park almost everywhere. Some cities have devoted nearly a third of their land to parking. This land, with the introduction of AVs, can be used in other ways, which may generate incomes for the cities. These vehicles can drop the passages and park themselves away from the central business district where the parking is ample. When the land is used in a better way, it will improve people living within that area.

There will be more effective and affordable taxis because there will be no extra fuel cost or the cab driver's time on the road due to traffic congestion. This is very favorable to the commuters as they will save on the price they could otherwise use when commuting.

The Cons of Automated Vehicles

The cost of implementing this new technology may vary very much. This may make the countries borrow large debts, which may cause a country's economy to go down. The technology would require laptops, software engineers, and other equipment that their initial buying cost and Maintenance cost are very high. On the other hand, despite the car being operated technologically, human resources services must control the machines used by this technology. This will make a person undergo some education, which is also extra costs for the technology to work. The human resources personnel are to manage and operate the computers using the knowledge acquired in school for the vehicles to reach their destination safely.

Like any other technology, AVs technology is subject to hacking, which might cause significant challenges and threats in the transport sector. AVs technology's cost and time-saving aspect will be utilized if the commuters themselves will be ready to opt in the new technology. If the self-driving element is not adopted in a wide range of nations, accidents will still be occurring globally.

Additionally, there will be massive job losses in the transport sector, starting with drivers to all other industry stakeholders. AVs will make people's living standards to deteriorate. Unemployment might come with other negative impacts, such as increased crime rate and suicidal attempts. Self-driving cars may not be able to operate mainly during harsh weather conditions. Heavy rain can cause the sensors and the computers not to function correctly; this, in the long run, might yield a fatal accident.

Automated vehicles' success is solely in the Global Positioning System's hands. This is always a challenge as not all GPS data is accurate, and one might get lost as he is trying to look for the destination.

Those that do driving as a hobby are likely not to buy the technology as they will see that as unfair competition, and they may keep their vehicles and be using them instead of using the automated cars. Lastly, the gasoline industry is likely to be the most hit industry by this technology; this is because the AVs machines are likely to be electric automated machines.

How Automated Cars Work

Based on the research conducted and the results obtained, automated vehicles are like two-sided coins that pose both benefits and limitations; being a new technology in the market, most people might find it hard to adopt. Eventually, the technology, like any other, will be adopted. Much research needs to be taken to put the social and ethical considerations in improving the automated vehicles before they are put into practice. The benefits of automated cars indeed outweigh the cost basing in mind the lives it will save, which is a priceless possession.
