Meet James "Bubba" Stewart Motocross Racer

‘The Tiger Woods of Motocross’ is how Fox TV decided to describe James Bubba Stewart. With an obvious reference to his ethnicity, Fox capitalizes on the fact that Stewart is another black athlete in a predominantly white sport. Of course this is not a earth-shattering revelation to any who follow the dangerous and extreme sport of motocross

bike racing. I do mean extreme too!

Motocross is a sport built on high speed and nerves of steel with some cocky aggression thrown into the mix. The recipe seems the perfect blend for potentially bone-breaking, jaw-dropping, and ear-splitting action and racing.

Racing on dirt tracks filled with jumps and whoops that jar the kidneys of even the strongest and best racers, Bubba Stewart has managed to become the best of the best, and assume the number 1 position for the past couple of years.

"It’s pretty cool because I’m the first [black athlete] to do anything in motocross. So I get a lot of love,” he said. “It’s cool to ... see a lot more black kids, a lot more minorities to come in [to the sport] and want to be like James Stewart.” Stated Stewart, in his interview with Fox TV.

Of course being #1 in your field offers certain perks, like for example, YOUR OWN TV SHOW.

Enter Bubba’s World a 10-episode reality series that just premiered on Fuel TV.

It is nice Stewart has his show to fall back on, since he seriously injured himself and has been unable to race the majority of the 2010 season. While his come-back is imminent, he has time to enjoy his show’s premiere while he heals.

Rookie Ryan Dungey has seized control of the title race, holding a 24-point lead on Ryan Villopoto with six races left. Stewart, who hopes to be back by at least May for the AMA outdoor season, expects Dungey to win the championship.

As to what it takes to be a motocross racer, besides nerve and grit, obviously skill on a motorcycle is an absolute must.

Then you must add skill on a motorcycle, while racing at high speeds. on a dirt track. And just for fun lets throw in some pot holes, jumps, and mounds that can send you careening out of control in an instant.

Oh yeah, last but certainly not least, you will be racing side-by-side with other motocross bikers who aren’t afraid to brush or push or bump into you while you all travel at high rates of speed trying to be the first to cross the finish line.

Suiting Up

Can there be any more equipment you need to strap on to protect yourself while you race your laps around the track? You would think the helmet, goggles, gloves, padded pants and shirts would be plenty, but then you would be wrong. Don't believe me? Just watch a short clip of what the average crash is like and you will quickly see what I mean.

There doesn't seem to be enough equipment to wear if one choses motocross racing as a chosen profession.

So it is a shock that a rookie has taken over the number one ranking while Stewart heals. Hopefully Ryan Dungey will stay safe!

“The biggest thing I learned is that you always have to be straight up and down,” further stating, “As an athlete, I love Tiger Woods for everything he’s done on the golf course. Everything that’s happened on the side, I’m sure he regrets a lot of things and I’m sure we all learned from that. But he’s still a dominant athlete and as far as being an athlete I’m still a huge fan of his.”

Kicking His Credentials

Bubba's bio is most impressive, but then so is his list of injuries, still so as not to digress, below is a list of his impressive wins and accomplishments.

As an amateur racer, James "Bubba" Stewart won nine national titles. Stewart became known for his blazing speed and big air, which was unheard of for a rider of his young age. In 2002, Bubba turned pro and was named the 2002 Rookies of the Year.

Since turning pro he has racked up win after win. He ended up with 11 wins in 2009 and had to rally to take over the lead in the AMA Supercross standings.

When he was presented with his 2009 AMA Supercross championship ring he said winning the 2009 championship was a gratifying experience.

A "phenomenal teenage talent" he swept the American amateur scene with an unheard-of 11 titles. Stewart immediately transferred his success to the professional arena setting a record for wins with 10 from 12 events.

The following two seasons, 2003 and 2004, delivered more spoils as he secured firstly the West Coast Supercross series and then the East Coast the following year. 2004 also saw his crowning as 125 MX champ for the second time.

Now a Quick Injury Note

His move into the premier division on a 250cc two-stroke did not go smoothly. He faced injury problems that kept him sidelined for the 2005 season.

Recovering for 2006, the only obstacle in the way was rival Ricky Carmichael. He won his first Motocross of Nations crown that year and also collected 8 SX main event victories that gave him the status of runner-up in his first real attempt and the FIM World Supercross (run concurrently with the AMA schedule) championship.

2007 saw Stewart claim the number one plate for Supercross. On the motocross circuit however another injury problem meant he dropped to 7th in the standings; also being ruled out of the Motocross of Nations at Budds Creek.

2008 he was fully fit for the Motocross schedule and he won all 24 races for a perfect outdoor season.

His aerial skill is widely-noted and his exceptional handling of a motorcycle resulted in techniques such as the ‘bubba scrub’ (where the machine is titled almost horizontally over a rise to reduce lost ‘air-time’) was frequently imitated and absorbed into the mainstream.

JS7 is the logo Stewart uses on his official fan gear, hats, web page etc.

Besides the number one ranking for his racing ability, Stewart is now raking in endorsements with the likes of Yamaha, Red Bull, and Nike.

As his brand and name gains recognition his earnings will likewise rise. If his reality show is successful it will only add to his increasing notoriety.

How the 24 year old will handle it all is yet to be seen, but thus far he is not trying to brand himself around an image that does not truly represent who he is.

 What are Whoops?

The part of the racetrack that gets the most of my attention, besides the finish line, are the whoops. A series of gut-busting jumps that rattle the bikers as well as the bikes. Two pictures and a short video clip highlight why these jumps grab my attention.


There can be no doubt that this is a very dangerous sport. Whenever terms such as motocross or extreme racing, or supercross are used, adrenaline junkies and thrill seekers alike easily relate to the sport and are drawn to it.

When I first began observing motocross, I was too naïve to realize how dangerous and aggressive the sport is. I was simply amazed at how well the racers handled such powerful engines and maneuvered such daunting obstacles.

Now that I have more knowledge of motocross I find myself wondering why it has to be so dangerous and so fast? Why the tracks have so many obstacles and sharp turns? Personally I would still enjoy watching the racers maneuver a safer, but I guess that is why I will never be a thrill seeker!

I would tell the racers, "Let's be careful out there!" but I know those cautionary words are diametrically opposed to the spirit of motocross.
