Charming antique graphics and retro advertising art

Vintage clip art from old-time photos, greeting cards, sheet music, antique advertising, and other retro paper items adds a warm and nostalgic feeling to crafts and unique hand made gifts.

The old-fashioned clip art, antique photos and public domain art line drawings or silhouettes you find in back issue magazines, old books and pre-1970 cards or posters add homey charm to scrapbooks and crafts.

Bits of printed art and headlines snipped from old posters, handbills, newspaper cuts, magazines and book pages embellish altered books, artist trading cards, paper crafts, gift tags and scrapbook pages with vintage style and visual interest.

Many retro graphics can be enlarged into prints suitable for framing. Decoupage and collage are perfect frugal crafts that make use of vintage images and antique clip art, most of which are in the public domain.

Vintage Clip Art Collections - Everything old is new again - antique graphics are hot

If you need to find many old time images in one place, you can buy a collection of vintage graphics on CD-ROM and print what you need when you want to add retro features to paper crafts.

Some collections are comprehensive, including many different categories such as old holiday card scans, advertising signs and placards, magazine spots, and newspaper cuts.

Other collections of retro art specialize in a specific topic or genre. Depending on your project needs, you may find a topical collection of vintage clip art is just right for the job.

Vintage Patriotic Clip Art and Graphics

Interesting patriotic graphics from years gone by, many from vintage greeting cards, hand bills and public domain photos exists in numerous collections both online and on CD-ROM.

The US Library of Congress is a rich resource for finding military posters, traditional patriotic poster art, and old printed works with a patriotic theme including Uncle Sam, the US flag, war coupons, sheet music, handbills and military regalia.

Vintage Photographs

Old photographs have a timeless quality when added to modern designs. They evoke nostalgia and lend charm to scrapbooks, memory books, greeting cards and advertising.

Retro art is always appealing, no matter what the era. If a photo is dates from just before one's date of birth or decades before that, the images of people and places no longer with us opens up our imaginations and hearts.

I just love this formal photograph of my maternal grandmother, Martha Theussert, as a young teenage girl in Germany.

Free Vintage Graphics Caveat

Not all vintage art is in the public domain, and not all retro graphics or photos are "free" except for personal use. Vintage graphics and retro art from collections offered online should not be used without permission unless the copyright owner's terms of use state you can reuse part or all from the collection for a commercial project.

Always be sure to determine the terms of use for text, recordings, graphics or photos you find in books or online. If you use anything created by another person for any purpose it is your responsibility to check terms of use and to respect copyright laws.

Out of print books and historic documents provide a wealth of public domain vintage clip art. The tried and true Library of Congress has archives of old documents and sheet music you can print on any paper or add some "age" to the copies before printing using PhotoShop.

Old newspapers and magazines offer plenty of line art that give a flavor of life and culture decades ago. Sheet music is a favorite for paper crafters and card makers, and if you have some talent with PhotoShop you can add an aged feel to your design work with special layers and brushes.

Wikimedia Commons image libraries contain many public domain scanned images you can use for personal or commercial work.

Vintage Image Craft Ideas and Projects

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, greeting cards were the most popular form of holiday communications.

Elaborate Valentines, Easter cards and St. Patrick's Day greetings were popular and inexpensive to purchase and send by mail post.

Christmas cards and post cards were exchanged by mail and by hand to friends, neighbors and family members over the holiday season.

Antique Labels

Early to mid-20th century products were shipped in wooden crates with colorful labels. Stickers from resorts and train, ship and rail carriers emblazoned vacationers' luggage.

The pictures, layout and colors in old packaging labels were stunning and still impressive today.

Fruit crate labels, seed packets and travel stickers from the early to mid 20th century are popular for home decorating as prints or to use as a basis for collage and decoupage crafts.
