Ribbet - Picnik Photo Editing Power
Ribbet is built on the same platform that made Google's Picnik great and is an easy to use yet powerful online photo editor. You can use Ribbet for collages, touch-ups and advanced photographic effects like curves and clone tools, fonts, frames, stickers, vampire effects, beards, and an entire pond full (yes, get ready to deal with some froggy puns) of effects.
Like many photo editing services (at least like those that have remained innovative and alive), in April 2014 Ribbet moved to a Freemium model. That means some features are free with a limited account, but you must upgrade to a premium account to get all the features. As a free user, you will only be able to open up the last 5 edits from your history. Your older history items will remain in your account for at least 30 days however, and if you upgrade within this time you will regain access to all of them. You will still be able to save edits, however you will only have access to those effects which aren't marked as "Premium".
If you choose to go for the paid version, you should first try the free version of both PicMonkey and Ribbet (if not others as well) to see which one you like the best.
Eye Effects - Change Eye Color
Several of Ribbet's many effects are related to eyes. You can remove red-eye, change eye color (shown above), brighten eyes and add mascara. As with all of Ribbet's effects, all of these can be completed with just one to two clicks.
Cloning and Coloring Photos
This example shows both cloning (4 extra eyes added) and eye coloring. You can easily delete areas from layers, textures, frames and stickers! This makes it easy to add another person to a photo - as shown in the video below, and to customize textures, stickers and frames by deleting areas you don't want.
Reasons to Ribbet Repeatedly
- Free - It is free! Although a premium version is also available.
- Picnik Like - If you liked Picnik, you will like Ribbet. You might even like it more!
- Ease of use - All the options are easy to find on the left menus. No searching for features.
- Clean and uncluttered feel - Kind of a companion to ease of use. But no pop-ups, no ads, no clutter.
- Constant enhancement - I have seen consistent updating from when they launched in 2012 till today - they are not just standing still, but are constantly adding new features.
- The ability to add text using any font from your computer. You can download and install thousands of free fonts from websites like dafont.com and then use them in your Ribbet creations, leading to endless typographic possibilities. See "Load My Fonts" at the bottom of the Ribbet font list to use any font from your computer.
Ribbet Effects - Sunless tan, Gooify, a Matte Frame and File Grain All Together
Pencil Sketch Effect
Holiday Photo Effects
There are special seasonal photo effects for holidays such as the Fourth of July (shown - US based but can be used for any fireworks oriented holiday), Halloween, New Year's Eve, Christmas, Mother's Day and Father's Day.
One of the most common photo editing requests - remove a person from my photo!
If you like Ribbet, You may also like
While Ribbet is a great choice for Photo Editing, it is not the only choice, you may want to explore one or more of the following photo editing websites.
- Picmonkey which was built by several former Picnik staffers and I find that folks have a hard time choosing between Ribbet and Picmonkey - many folks even use both.
- Photoshop Express - Great choice if you want a bit more "serious" photo editing tools.
- BeFunky Photo Effects - Try Befunky if you are interested in really jazzing up your photos.
- Fotor - I recommend Fotor for folks who use Windows 8 - it really operates like Windows 8, otherwise I do favor some of the other editors mentioned here.
- Picadilo Photo Editor - Another good editor, the multiple photo windows is the key feature that makes Picadilo a strong contender to be your top choice for photo editing.
PicMonkey is the creation of several former Picnik engineers and is another great photo editor. While very similar to Picnik and Ribbet in functionality, Ribbit is even closer in screen layout to the original Picnik. Just as with Ribbet, in the left-hand column you see all of your photo editing options. The range of options includes everything from basics likes cropping and rotating to a full array of air-brushing edits.
Photoshop Express is a free web version of Photoshop - the best photo editing software on the marketing. Photoshop is so successful that many people use Photoshop as a generic term for photo editing.
The free version is obviously a less featured version of the expensive Photoshop software - you don't get all the bells and whistles. That said you won't miss many of the exotic features as this web version is targeted at mainstream consumers, not professionals. Photoshop Express is not as easy to use as a Ribbit or PicMonkey - but if you want to get into changing colors, removing objects and other advanced editing techniques this is a great intro to the Photoshop world.
Professional Photo Editing
I love editing photos myself using tools like Ribbet, but when you have the photos from a one time special event like a wedding or a reunion you might want to consider a more professional touch. Tucia can add a person into a family portrait or even remove an unwanted stranger from your photo - turn a photo bomb into a photo wow! Tucia offers glamour and digital cosmetic enhancement options - get a tan, clear up your acne or remove somebody's braces. Simple touch-ups such as digital camera mark or red eye removal and cropping are also available.
While you can do some of the basics with Ribbet or a similar online service, to do things like digitally open up closed eyes, fix hair or remove photo-bombs from the background - you need Photoshop, Photoshop skills or you can use a service like Tucia.
Fotor Photo Editor
Windows 8 Style Photo Editor
Fotor is a photo editing web application that's suitable for people, especially Windows 8 users, looking for an easy to use and affordable photo editor. Fotor sports a Windows 8 interface and allows you to your photos a wide range of looks, to add fancy borders, to create a collage or simply fix some imperfections, Fotor is free to use so long as your browser runs Flash. Fotor's clean interface sports a dual pane toolbar on the left with thumbnails of all the photos (you can upload many at once) for your session on the right and your editing workspace in the middle of the screen. From this basic interface you have access to a full range of free photo editing tools. With Picmonkey starting to charge for certain services, editors like Fotor will probably see more traffic.
For when you are working offline, Fotor also has companion apps for the iPhone/iPad, the Android and Windows 8 so you can and use Fotor across many devices
Save on Photo Books and Gifts
Once you edit your photos, you may want to print or share or even have more fun with your photos. Shutterfly is a great size for photo printing, photo books, photo mugs and beyond. I order a lot of photo gifts and coupons for Shutterfly can help you save a ton of money. Once you get on the Shutterfly mailing list you can get these coupons for yourself - but till then eBay is a great source for coupon deals. Even once you are on their mailing list, they often give out better coupons to specific customers and you'll see those folks selling their unwanted deals on eBay.
Picadilo Photo Editor
Picadilo is a free online photo editor that's easy to use and powerful. You can transform your photos using eyecatching effects, versatile editing tools and a nice range of textures. Some of the best features are the photo mosaic and the ability to use multiple windows - commonly available in only much more expensive photo editors. You can let your creativity run free by loading more than one photo and working on them side by side. You can even select and copy regions from one photograph to another photograph.
Ribbet has a huge collection of stickers that, with one click, can be applied to your photos. What's shown above is just a small selection of the stickers available with Ribbet.
All photos used on this site are personal photos or licensed stock images and are edited using the various photo editing tools described within.

Ribbet just released an update which lets you edit your Facebook and Flickr photos, and save out to Facebook or Flickr. You can also now create collages and layers from Facebook/Flickr/History/Web photos.
