There is a huge debate amongst photographers and artists on whether Instagram is good or bad for the industry. I will sound off in support with a resounding "Good" for anyone who appreciates photography. I am obsessed with Instagram and enjoy following amazing photographers from around the World.
What I love most about Instagram is that it democratizes Photography. Anyone with an iPhone and a good eye for a shot can create and share them on IG. What's more, the internet has connected people from the most remote places with other photographers around the World. For example, one of the artists showcased in Nature below, Finn Beales, lives in a remote part of Wales -- so remote that they cut wood for heat and the closest town only has 1,500 people. Yet Finn, like many others profiled here, have become Instagram legends for their photography.
So, not only does IG democratize photography, but it also brings us closer to the far reaches of the World. You can follow members from Instanbul, Tokyo, NYC, Norway and any other country with mobile access. There are amazing artists sharing photos from every corner of the globe. In essence, Instagram has made the world small -- just look at the locales of the names on this list of 50 photographers, it truly is a united nations of countries. You get both the different perspectives coming from different parts of the World and the stunning imagery and sights from anywhere in the World -- whether that is the majestic Eiffel Tower, serene shores of the Mediterranean or the gritty streets of New York City.
As for the arguments against Instagram, well I think it is largely a Ludditian fool's mission. One argument is that too many amateur photographers devalues the landscape for professional photographs. While true, it just means that professionals must become more creative both in what they shoot and how they make money from their art. Others worry about theft of personal images from Instagram. And while it is true that photos are sometimes stolen, the dpi quality level of Instagram images is too low to print high quality artwork. An interested party would still need to work with the artist to purchase quality photographs to make into framed pieces.
I am strongly against anyone stealing other's images and calling them their own and I think it is important that Instagram photographers protect their best work with watermarks to prevent anyone from claiming their work. There are free and inexpensive watermark programs available on the web and in mobile app form in both iPhone and Android app stores.
Breakdown of Photography Categories
I have been following photographers and celebrities on Instagram since early 2012 and have identified many great amateur and professional photographers sharing fantastic images with Instagram. Most all of them post images across a range of photography categories, however, I have attempted to sort the artists into categories based on the predominant number of photos on their feed.
Architecture & Structures
Black & White
Colors & Colorization
Effects through Editing
Effects through Shot Set-up
Geometric & Patterns
Landscapes & Nature
The last category reserved for a group of Instagram artists that have such a widely diverse grouping of shots that they defy categorization.
One of the other things I find interesting is the large number of photos that these artists share on Instagram. Many of them have shared over a 1,000 images and most have shared more than 500 on Instagram. It is clear where they fall in the debate about Instagram's effect on their photography. Also keep in mind that most of these artists have a website where you can buy some of their framed photography. If you like what you see, I urge you to click through and support these Instagram users by buying their works.
I have put watermarks on any photos that did not already have a watermark. I used a free watermark site called PikMarkr.com to create the watermarks.

Architecture & Structure Photography
Instagram photographers illiciting the beauty of buildings and structures
Great architecture is a great subject for photography, especially at the hands of a photographer with a great eye for framing interesting shots. These artists do not only focus on architecture and structures in their photography, but interesting structures can be found in many of their work. They have a unique vision to catch those structures in a creative setting or combined with other interesting elements.
Timothy McGurr (@13thwitness) - Up and coming photographer and son of Graffiti Artist, Lenny McGure (Futura 2000)
Timothy McGurr is a young up and coming artist and son of world renown Graffiti Artist, Lenny McGurr (aka Futura 2000). He travels the world now for Nike and others on photography and video projects. Black & White or Retro Photography
Instagram photographers know how to use light and shadows to evoke emotion
Photographers have explored the contrast between light and dark for decades. One of the best ever was Ansel Adams whos brilliant use of contrast provided stunning images of nature and landscapes.
These Instagram photographers are some of the best that I have found at demonstrating contrast. If you enjoy the retro look of black and white or dark shadows and sharp cuts between light and dark, you should enjoy these artists. There are many others that have dabbled in it but these artists seem to showcase this contrast in most of their photos.
@mr007 - An iPhoneographer obsessed with the contrast between Light & Shade
I have not found anyone on Instagram that is more focused on "light & shade", as he calls it, than mr007. He is brilliant at achieving pitch black in the shadows of his images to give them a surreal feel. Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, all his work is taken on an iPhone and yet you will not believe what he can do with such a simple camera. His work is outstanding and will inspire you to improve the lighting and contrast in your own photography.

Colors...Vivid Colors in Photography
Check out these IG Photographers that dazzle with Color
These wonderful Instagram photographers use vibrant colors to catch your attention and pull you into their images. It is interesting that many of these colorful artists hail from one part of the World, the Mediterranean Region, and more specifically Turkey. Hatice Korkmaz (@kardinalmelon) - A beautiful array of photos from the Mediterranean highlighted by stunning color
Hatice Korkmaz hails from Instanbul, Turkey and most of her photos showcase that beautiful part of the world. Her signature is her color editing to create almost supernatural colors. She is also the sister of another colorful artist on our list, @izkiz. Effects through Editing Software
These photographers will amaze you with their other-worldly effects
There are two effect categories that I have highlighted; Effects through Editing and Effects through Shot Set-up. This first category includes photographers that combine their photography skills with editing software tools to create incredible images not possible on a simple camera.
Often these artists combine elements from multiple photos to create these otherworldly images. Many of their works project a dreamlike quality that takes us into fantasy worlds and supernatural places. This is one of my favorite categories as these artist create images that others can't recreate.
Ali Jardine (@alijardine) - An astoundingly creative iPhoneographer with stunning shots

Effects Through Shot Set-up
These photographers are excellent at framing and setting up a shot
All of the best artists understand that framing is a key to good photography but there is a breed of photographers that take framing and set-up to another level. These artists will spend hours searching for the perfect backdrop, setting or lighting for their unique shots. I have highlights several of the best at using the set-up to create stunning effects.
Scroll through their Instagram feeds and it will quickly become obvious that their dedication to setting up the shot is what truly sets them apart. Some of the most compelling photography focuses on people
While many photographers find architecture, landscape and nature more interesting than humans. Maybe that is because so much of our own family photography focuses on humans, that we tend to turn the camera on inanimate objects for art.
However, some of the most compelling photography that I have ever seen were portraits of fascinating faces both famous and not. There are not as many Instagram photographers that focus on portraits but these artists shown here are outstanding and could very well change the way you view portrait art.
Sefa Yamak (@sefayamak) - Magnificent imagery from of the people, architecture and landscapes of Turkey

Their love of the game will definitely rub off on you as you browse through their Instagram feeds.
Brad Mangin (@bmangin) - A sports photographer capturing San Francisco, the Giants and Candlestick Park
Brad Mangin is a sports photographer in San Francisco. He primarily covers baseball which is not my favorite sport but definitely lends itself to excellent photographs -- warm weather, beautiful colors and lots of games each year. Brad has been in the right place at the right time as the San Francisco Giants have won two of the last three World Series. What I like most about Brad's photography is not the players themselves so much as how he captures the parks and the feeling of being at a baseball game on a warm summer day. Check it out and see if you don't feel the same. Brad also has a book coming out with many of his best sports photography shots.

You will find great action shots surfing, skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, etc. But in addition to just active sports photography, Zak also has a great eye for still photography and has shot some stunning architectural and landscape photos. You should also check out his own site, photosbyzak.com for a very cool slideshow of some of his best photographs.

These outstanding photographers defy categorization
All of these photographers provide shots from such a wide variety of categories that it was impossible to narrow them into one category. As a result, I created this Undefined category to capture these free spirits' photographs. Most of these photographers dabble in many of the categories highlighted above. They are also among my favorite Instagram photographers so I needed this category to include them.
Brenton Clarke Little (@brenton_clarke) - An early pioneer in Instagram photography with a wide range of interests
Brenton is a true renaissance man; he is a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator. But that is not all, he is also an experienced live and session musician for such artists as Kris Allen and Gazer. His photography spans a wide range of categories. He is drawn to architecture, black & white, interesting silouhettes and amazing landscapes.

Chris Connolly (@chrisconnolly) - You know when you see a photo and you wish you had taken it...well that happens a lot with Chris' work
Chris Connolly is a photographer, designer and videographer from NYC. He is one of the most followed photographers on Instagram and with good reason -- his photographs are magnificent. But there is no way to constrain Chris' work to one photography category, he has created amazing work with architecture, landscapes, silhouettes, structures and effects. You can't help but experience NYC in all its essence through Chris' art. I love this photograph of the lone individual at the Metropolitan Museum of Art -- it is hard to tell where the art ends and real life begins, or maybe that's the point.

Chris Ozer (@chrisozer) - Another outstanding artist who dabbles in many photography categories
Chris Ozer is a photographer from Brooklyn, NY. Chris catches astonishing shots across so many different genres of photography including architecture, geometric, landscapes, silhouettes, portraits and even shots from everyday life. He has a fantastic eye for framing a shot and uses the contrast between light and dark to accentuate his photos. This shot of a two people fishing is incredibly unique. The rare matched color of the lake and the fog provides an amazing illusion that the canoe exists in vast vacuum of color. Very striking shot and one of my favorite from Instagram.

Ryan Stancato (@ryanstancato) - An amateur photographer whose talent belies his amateur status
Ryan Stancato is a creative professional from Chicago, IL who provides photography and entertainment marketing to the musis industry. He has worked with a number of bands to build awareness on their rise to the charts. What I love about Ryan is the lengths he goes to for a shot whether it is walking through burned out buildings or driving hours outside the city to find the perfect barn. His photography often captures the raw essence of his subjects whether people, places or things.

@anonymous: Entitled to your opinion but I think they are all top quality. I did not say best because I could never review all of the photographers on Instagram. These are all worth following because they share amazing photos.
anonymous on March 20, 2013:
Euh I wouldn't say 50 amazing photographers just 50 most followed ones.. and that doesn't mean good quality. There are exceptions, but srsly this selection's quality is not top.
