How to Create Rhinestone Flip Flops
Rhinestone flip flops are really cute, but they can quickly get expensive. It is also difficult to find different color combination. I am here to answer your prayers! I wanted to provide purple rhinestone flip flops for my bridesmaids when we get pedicures done the day before the wedding. In this lens I will show you step by step how I made rhinestone flip flops for $6.94* each in an afternoon. By selecting the color of flip flops and rhinestones, you can create a custom look for yourself, your friends or your bridesmaids.
*I have plenty of rhinestones and glue remaining, so if I made more pairs the cost would decrease even more.
I personally choose to use Old Navy's Classic Flip Flops for the decorating because they're comfortable (and inexpensive if I mess up!) I like the combination of purple and black, so I selected black flip flops for my bridesmaids and silver for myself. I didn't think that I should wear black shoes with my white dress!
I have chosen some other plain black flip flops that would also work well. You will want to make sure that the shoes fit your feet, or the feet of the intended recipient, before you start decorating!
Step 2: Measure the Flip Flop Straps
You want to make sure you order enough rhinestones to decorate the entire flip flop straps. To calculate how many rhinestones you will need, you should measure your flip flop strap.
I demonstrated how I measured the strap in the image to the right. The width of the straps on my flip flops were 1 cm, and on the biggest shoe (size 10) the straps were ~15 cm long. Since each pair has 2 flip flops, and each flip flop has 2 straps, the total strap area for each flip flop is ~60 cm2. For 6 pairs of flip flops, I would need to cover 360 square cm2
Step 3: Calculate your Rhinestones - Order the rest of your supplies
Rhinestones sizes are described in terms of their diameter either as mm or ss (stone size). You may need to use a rhinestone size conversion chart to make sure you understand what the sizes actually mean.
I'm not suggesting we do any complex geometry to find our rhinestones. We will approximate each rhinestone as a square. I selected rhinestones with 5 mm diameters (21ss) so I could have two rows of them on each strap. This would mean that for each cm2 of strap, I would need 4 rhinestones. This is 240-5mm rhinestones per flip flop, 1440 for the six I needed to create.
Different Rhinestone Sizes
When evaluating rhinestones of different sizes, I calculated how many of them I would need to finish my project. This helped me when I was evaluating how to get the best value for my project. My strap area was 60 cm^2.
Rhinestone diameter 1 cm = 1 rhinestone/cm^2 = 60 rhinestones for my project.
Rhinestone diameter 5 mm = 4 rhinestone/cm^2 = 240 rhinestones for my project.
Rhinestone diameter 3 mm = 9 rhinestone/cm^2 = 540 rhinestones for my project.
Rhinestone diameter 2 mm = 25 rhinestone/cm^2 = 1500 rhinestones for my project.
Step 4: Prepare Your Working Area
Since we're dealing with a strong adhesive, and you don't want to glue rhinestones to yourself or to your floor, I recommend working on a paper grocery bag. The glue dries pretty fast, but I felt it was better to be overly cautious.
Tip: Place your loose rhinestones in a disposable bowl. It helps keeping them from spilling all over the floor and you won't get glue on something you care about.
Step 5: Spread glue onto a small area of the strap
Starting at the center of the flip flop strap, place a small amount of the rhinestone adhesive. Spread the adhesive into a thin layer with a toothpick. (The adhesive will dry clear, and since these rhinestones will be on your feet, it is okay if some glue ends up squirting out around the edges.)
Tip: Use a toothpick to spread the glue over the flip flop strap
I started applying the rhinestones to the flip flops in the front center portion of the flip flop. Add the rhinestones with your fingers, then slide them into the correct position with a toothpick. You may have to shift the rhinestones around a bit to get them to pack in a way you like. Don't worry, after you place the rhinestones down, you have a while before the glue dries so you can move the rhinestones into the correct position.
Tip: Work in small sections on multiple flip flops at one time. This will give the glue more time to dry so you don't accidentl
Step 7: Spread glue, add rhinestones and repeat!
As you add rhinestones section by section to the straps, you will find that it helps to lay the flip flop on its side as you get close to the end of the straps.
I left the tags on the flip flops so I wouldn't mix up the different sized pairs, but an added bonus was that it helped keep the shoes propped up.
The glue is white until it dries clear
Step 8: Add the last few rhinestones where the back of the strap connects with the flip flop
It is helpful to let most of the flip flop dry before you add the last few rhinestones. You will need to pull the strap away from the edge a bit to place the rhinestones (see image). There is no need to go to VERY end of the edge, just be patient because the rhinestones are likely to slip around a lot at this step.
Step 9: Give your rhinestone flip flops plenty of time to dry
Doublecheck the placement of all of your rhinestones, and then place the flip flops in safe place to dry for a couple of hours. I would avoid trying the flip flops on until you're sure that they are completely dry.
Step 10: Enjoy your pretty rhinestone flip flops!

Very good job of laying out how to make these, especially calculating how many rhinestones you will need to make a pair. Great crafting lens. ~Blessed~
